The Mechanics - Unplug and unwind in your very own cabin in the woods.
The Mechanics House
Cottage Features
The Mechanics House is a generously sized open-plan studio room with a king-size bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and living and dining areas. The industrial-style bathroom features a claw-foot bath, toilet, and vanity, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. You can relax on the elegant Chesterfield lounge while watching the fire burn. The cottage provides everything you need for a romantic escape or a peaceful work retreat, including complimentary Wi-Fi and overhead ceiling fans. Step outside onto the private verandah, complete with a day bed, making it a comfortable home away from home year-round.
Building History
The Mechanics House is a significant part of the town's history, reflecting its vibrant past. It was meticulously restored using authentic local materials, showcasing original weatherboards and ironbark floorboards. A datum rail inside was skilfully crafted from recycled floorboards sourced from the original dance hall. The bathroom once housed the Australian-made Lister motor and copper generator, alongside the original fuses and power board. At its core, the house features a wooden insert that covers the original vehicle maintenance pit. The surrounding stone retaining wall is made from Brooman River Stones, and the steps to the rear verandah are constructed from Brooman silt stone.
Off-Grid Living
The property is completely off-grid and powered by a central solar system with underground 240V power. Water comes from the pristine rain collected and stored in galvanized iron tanks. Hot water is heated by an instantaneous gas water heater located on the outside of the building.
Brooman Features
The old town site is set opposite a large bend in the Clyde River. The deep water extends for nearly a kilometre upstream, making it a great place for canoeing, fishing for Bass, Platypus watching, or simply listening to the dozens of unique and beautiful endemic bird species of this area. There is a resident mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that typically comes out at dusk. You may also spot Red-Necked Wallabies, Bandicoots, microbats, blue-tongued lizards, and Possums. The buildings date back to the late 1800s to early 1900s, once supporting a thriving community of up to 200 people. Brooman had a post office, school, dance hall, mechanics building, galley, general store, phone exchange, and cottages like this one.
Quality Linens and Towels
We understand the importance of fresh, soft linens and fluffy towels. You'll find both provided in your room, adding a touch of luxury to your stay.
