-This cottage was exactly what I was looking for and met all of my expectations. Tucked away in Kent Hollow in the Taconic Mountains (not the Green's) of Rupert is this quaint and idyllic getaway. The listing description was accurate and provided a great deal of information. The property was clean and proper inside and out upon my arrival and I was sure to leave it that way when I departed. There were no logistical issues/problems with the cottage at all. The owners provided great customer service and made clear that they were there to help or answer any questions. Not only would I recommend this property to others, but I wished I could share this place with many people while I was there. My only recommendation would be that the owners post some pictures of the kitchen on the website. I had actually asked for some when going through the renting process. The kitchen was perfect however; with lots of space, big refrigerator, good size stove/oven, and lots of counter room.
-I arrived Tuesday through rain and sleet. Nearby Bear and Spruce Mountains were shrouded with fog and the upper reaches of the trees had ice/snow on them giving them that "frosty" look, beautiful. After settling I drove down to where Hebron Road meets the D&H Rail Trail, right in Rupert. I walked north on the Delaware & Hudson RT for two miles out and back, for a nice total of 4 miles. Wednesday I hiked Haystack Mountain in Pawlet, the next town just to the north of Rupert. Haystack is called the "Gibraltar of Vermont" as it's shear rock face rises abruptly from the hills that surround it. The owner asked me to leave details/directions in one of the information binders in the cottage, as she had not heard of it before. The hike is 3.4 miles with approx 1,100 feet in elevation gain. The cold front the day before broke the weather to clear blue skies with warmer temperatures. Thursday I checked out Merck Forest and Farm Center. I would say this is the highlight of Rupert. I hiked Antone Mountain from the main entrance on Route 315. The hike was 5 miles with approx 800 feet in elevation gain. I departed the cottage Friday. I stopped in Manchester Center on my way home and spend a few hours walking around and checking out the shops. My favorite store was probably Northshire Bookstore and I loved the Factory Point Town Green.
-My original plan was to visit the greater Manchester area, but I realized that Rupert had so much to offer for me. It is a hub for outdoor recreation and is beautiful.
My wife and I, along with our two dogs, had an amazing four days in this picture perfect cottage nestled alongside a beautiful creek. The cottage has everything you could need and is truly a relaxing retreat in a beautiful part of Vermont. This is an ideal spot for anyone looking to relax, take in the gorgeous surroundings, and curl up with a good book (or one of your 4-legged friends). We can't wait to return again and enjoy all this lovely property has to offer.
This place is completely private and wonderfully secluded! The owners went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and everything was just right when there was a minor hiccup with the sink. The cottage is nestled at the base of a hill (mountain?), with a brook right in the back. I would imagine on warm nights, the sound of the brook is amazingly soothing (it was too cold on our visit to leave windows and doors open!). You can also trek up the hill and star gaze in two chairs halfway up. The kitchen is nicely apportioned. It is the perfect little home away from home! The upstairs is a little difficult to get up and down (especially in the middle of the night when you have to pee!), but they also provide a pull out sofa downstairs for those that need it.
James and I had an amazing week-long stay at this cozy cottage. We were able to forget all of our worries and the stresses of work and civilization. We had days were this was our home base for driving and exploring Vermont. Other days, we stayed in, enjoyed reading by a fire, cooking meals and listening to the sounds of the brook. The hosts were amazingly helpful in navigating the area and exploring ideas for what to do, but they also gave us our privacy. We will be lucky to find the time to return and particularly hope to come back during the warmer months to do some hiking.
For our anniversary, my husband and I only had a few "musts" in choosing our long weekend destination- scenic, secluded, a fireplace, and dog friendly. This location hit each one of those needs on the nose!
The owners went out of their way to ensure that guests of the cottage were provided with all the amenities necessary to make the stay enjoyable. Not only was the property clean, it was well stocked with binders of information (on nearby historic sites, restaurants, and grocery stores), books, kitchen goods, and linens. My husband and I did not arrive until late on our first night and were pleasantly surprised to find a voicemail from the owners on the answering machine welcoming us to the cottage and letting us know that they were available if we needed anything. It is gestures like that that make you want to return again and again!
Finally, I cannot express enough how wonderful this location is for dogs and their owners. As city dwellers, it is wonderful to stay in a location that is so welcoming to dogs. My husband and I found great joy in having our morning coffee outside while watching our golden retrievers happily bound through the snow only running back to the cottage for treats and the occasional pat on the head- luckily we have the pictures to remember it all by!
I could not wait to get home and write this review because my husband, 2.5 year old and I had such an amazing weekend at this cottage. It is such a unique and special place - the beautiful wood interior with all the little doors, handles, latches - we felt like we were staying in a troll or fairy's home :) The setting is completely private and peaceful - located on a very quiet dirt road with no other houses in sight (although the owners house is just down the street should you need anything at all). The stream that babbles by the house, the private bridge, the streamside patio, the woodstove, the charcoal grill, deer sightings daily, and so much to do and see in the local area. We stayed 3 nights but could easily have filled a whole week with all we wanted to do. We were lucky that the Peru fair was running while we were there, which was great (although expect a lengthy wait to and from on the shuttle buses) and a true old country fair. We also visited the fabulous Dorset Farmer's Market and Merck Forest and Farmland (another hidden gem) as well as several country stores. The cabin comes with everything you could possibly need for your stay and we enjoyed staying in at night and cooking, although there appears to be a wealth of nice restaurant options in the area. Joanne called to check in and see if we needed anything and was extremely helpful and accessible. We absolutely loved this place and can't wait to go back.
