Studio, sleeps 4. Approximately 400 square feet, plus 200 sq ft screen porch.

. …….The Cabin is insulated and has an airtight wood stove. There is a Murphy bed with a queen size mattress. This is a “camping cabin” -- It does not have inside running water or electric [other than a small solar electric system described below] - that's what "camping cabin" refers to. The forest has lots of wildlife, deer, wild turkeys, foxes, raccoons, great horned owls, etc. T ……..For cooking there is a 2 burner Coleman camp stove, and outside, a stone fireplace.
Solar power: Solar electric panels on the roof charge a marine storage battery. It is a small system, only enough for small electronics, the water pump, and a couple of CFL lamps. The solar charge controller has an outlet for a USB charging cable. ……..Officially, it's the "Potic Creek" but one of our guests from Europe liked the location so much she named it Poetic Creek in her 2014 review. It is an idyllic getaway for those who appreciate nature. It is about a 2 hour drive from the GWB - 20 miles from Woodstock. ……..When we started thinking about the possibility of sharing a cabin a decade ago, the question was, how can we do it? It is an hour and a half round trip from our home, so traveling to the cabin after every guest is not feasible. To make it work, we ask guests to bring their sleeping bags [or sheets and blankets] and towels, and, 'leave it as you found it.' We figured most guests who were interested in this type of retreat would be respectful of the next guest, and that has been true. We ask, if you cannot make a commitment to leave the cabin clean and tidy for the guest after you, please don’t book a stay here. Once a month or so, we check out the cabin, restock supplies, and do any cleaning that’s needed. As in any cabin is the woods, mice do get in. If that would bother you, please don’t book a stay here. …….Pets: Your dog is OK if you let us know before booking, we do not charge a pet fee. After a couple of guests ha a problem with allergies to cats, it became necessary not to accept cats. We do ask that if you bring your dog, that you do a thorough cleaning to remove hair, and, that you not have your dog on the bed, unless you bring a sheet or blanket large enough to cover it. This is on the honor system, please respect other guests, we can't go there to check up between every guest’s stay. At the cabin are plates, glasses, utensils, pots and pans, a French press coffee maker, T paper, paper towels, dish detergent, candles, a Coleman 2 burner stove for cooking and propane fuel for it. As it is camping, you will need sleeping bags [or blankets and sheets], and having a flashlight is a good idea, essential if you are arriving after dark. Bring what you would for any camping trip, especially drinking water, matches and some newspaper to start the fire. In front of the cabin there’s a stone fire place and with a grill. We provide cut seasoned firewood. There is a maul [splitting axe] for splitting cut logs to the appropriate diameter. The firewood is provided for heating the cabin with the wood stove fires for cooking in the fire place in front of the cabin only. ……. Please do not make outdoor fires other than in the stone fire place on the patio by the front door. While the firewood is cut to length, some pieces require splitting with the maul. For the wood stove, up to 4 or 5 inches in diameter works once the fire is going. ……. Important fire safety note: Do NOT use fire starting fluid in the wood stove, it is dangerous and can damage the stove. For heat, there is an excellent, very efficient Napoleon airtight wood stove. It has a glass front door, so you can watch the fire burning. We send instructions in case you are not familiar with the use of airtight wood stoves.. …….THE ROAD: The wood road in is a mile long. It’s a bit rough, but not a problem to drive in as far as the parking spot for the cabin [shown on a map we send to guests]. [We can drive in in our Prius, which is quite low to the ground, but do need to drive slowly in a few places] The 300 feet from the parking spot to the cabin, however, are quite steep, unless you have four wheel drive, walk this last part. Over the years, two guests [out of a few hundred] have told us they felt the road too rough. So, if you have an especially low clearance or high value car, you may not want to come here. …….ROAD IN WINTER: If there is a significant amount of snow, you would need a four wheel drive vehicle, as the road will not be plowed.. With snow, the last 300 feet to the cabin would need to be walked, short of having a snowmobile ; - ). If you book it for winter, and it snows, there are two options. If you have 4 wheel drive you can drive to the parking area just before the cabin and walk the last 300 feet. If there is just a couple inches of snow, two wheel drive should be OK, as there are no steep hills before the parking area. If there is really heavy snow, then even four wheel drive may not be enough. Also, is there is significant snow, at the beginning of the road snowplows may have left a snowbank and you may want a shovel with you to make an entrance through it. If snow prevents you from driving in to the cabin, we will give a full refund or a rain check, at your option. We discovered that one can get a "snow depth" report with this search phrase: "snow depth, Catskill, NY, Weatherstreet”. . ……..WATER: As of the end of 2017 new town regulations prohibit use of our well water by guests for cooking and drinking. We have used it for years and will continue to do so. We have always suggested bringing in water for drinking and cooking – now it is needed. The Potic Creek flows out of a reservoir serving the Town of Catskill, so we know its clean, however, no surface water is recommended for drinking.. There is a drilled well in front of the cabin, and a solar powered submersible pump at the bottom of the well. When the pump is turned on, water flows from a brass pipe at the top of the well. …….CELL PHONE SERVICE: We mostly get service on our cell phones there – IT DEPENDS ON YOUR PROVIDER. We have ATT and Cricket. Occasionally, we don’t get service, then we have to walk up the hill to the parking area, or, rarely, a bit past the abandoned cabin, then we can connect. ……In addition to the queen bed, there is a queen size air bed. There is a foot operated air pump -. If you use the airbed, before you go, please fully deflate it and return to the same place. Do not over inflate the mattress, just slightly firm to the touch. To deflate, you need to insert a small rod such as a pencil into the air opening to bypass the automatic air seal. ……..If you note that any essentials are getting low, please let us know so we can re-stock them. We try to keep basics in stock. We can’t guarantee all are in stock, so bring essentials. ……Update for 2017. We have installed a timer on the lighting circuit at the cabin. This is to prevent the problem some guests have caused by leaving the lights on when they leave. Leaving the lights on 24/7 drains the storage battery of the solar electric system. So you will now see a timer mounted next to the solar control panel and storage battery. By turning the knob clockwise, it turns the lights on for up to an hour. [This is separate from the timer for the water pump]. A small inconvenience, perhaps, but better than having a guest come and find no electric. …….After you book the cabin, we will email a map, instructions, a primer on starting campfires, key information, etc. Please print them out and take them with you. [In case you don’t get service at the cabin. If they don't arrive by email within a couple hours of booking, let us know. To reiterate: If you wish to stay in this cabin, please be prepared to leave it clean and take away your trash. We cannot travel there between every guest's visit. We can only re-stock and clean it periodically, if you are not prepared to do housekeeping at the end of your stay, please don't book it. Since once or twice a year, a guest doesn’t clean up or take their trash with them, if that should happen, we ask that you deal with the issue and let us know, we will reimburse you for your time. Thank you. Andrew Peck and Chloe Dresser Texting and emailing to BOTH of us is the best way to reach one of us if you have a question. We love that it is so remote and private, at the very end of a mile long wood road. If there's snow, it won't be plowed, you would need a four wheel drive to reach it in the snow. If you book it and there's snow so you can't reasonably drive in, we will give a rain check [snow check?] or a full refund - your choice. The last 300 feet to the cabin which is steep, and should not be driven down unless you have four wheel drive. Before that steep part, there is a parking area. Other things to note …….Mice are a fact of life in a country cabin. Periodically, we set traps and get rid of them, but soon enough, more get in. If seeing a mouse would bother you, the cabin is not for you. So we add this in hopes that guests who would be afraid in the wilderness, or timid about driving on a country back road, will choose a place more to their liking. . ……..The property is owned by Dresser Properties LLC. Your hosts are Chloe Dresser and Andrew Peck A town law enacted in 2017 requires us to post the following three statements on this website: 1. The maximum number of guests permitted overnight is 4, the maximum number of daytime occupants is 8. 2. Occupants and their guests are must comply with the Town Code. 3. New law requires the following statement here "The Town of Athens is a residential community and any unreasonable noise, disturbances, disorderly conduct, or violations of the Town Code will not be tolerated and may result is fines, citation, and/or eviction from the rental unit." The town law also required us to discontinue use of the outhouse. This is a “camping cabin” so it’s not a problem for us. There is a small shovel, we just make a 4 inch deep hole and cover it up.

Perfect for dogs. Secluded and quiet.

  • 5 von 5

This rustic cabin had a screened porch that was beautiful. My dogs loved splashing in the creek as did we. We saw no one for three days. The cabin was cozy. Make sure you bring your own sheets and towels. Keep food in bins. Mice love toilet paper. Don't leave anything out or the mice will have a party. We are going back soon. I never slept so soundly.

This property is great! We had a really nice experience staying here.

  • 5 von 5

The property is very clean and ultimate privacy! The long road leading up to the house provides a scenic route and very peaceful. It's very DIY which we liked. The nearest town with supermarkets, antique shopping and other amenities is just a short drive away. We would definitely stay here again!!

Needs Work

  • 1 von 5

My girlfriend and I booked this cabin to get away for our birthdays. Unfortunately Andrew told me the cabin had been double booked for part of our stay, but he had a smaller one. We wanted to spend any time we could in the 1st cabin, but we planned on being dropped off and picked up and wanted to avoid the expense of a car to change locations. He offered to get us a ride and we accepted.

We found trash lying around. The well was funky with a piece of moldy wood in the shaft and an old rubber tube going into the murk. We boiled river water. The interior was where it got bad with mouse feces everywhere. On everything, but most unfortunately, on/in the bed. The CDC says not to stay in any cabin in NY with a rodent infestation to avoid Hantavirus. We had backpacking quilts, so we made dinner and slept outside. The low temps and high winds were preferable. In the morning I resolved to clean it up and stick it out. After bagging trash, scrubbing furniture, and cleaning mouse poop from nightstand and bed, I started on the bedframe and lifted the mattress, finding more poop than I was willing to deal with. We were emailing with Andrew, and he agreed to have us driven to the 2nd cabin that day. It must be a known issue, as there was a cooler labeled, “NO MOUSE ZONE”… filled with mouse poo.

Pros: Good firewood & tools. The patio is good once cleaned up and cooking at the fire pit was nice. The woods/river are lovely.

We got the ride to the 2nd cabin by the lake. There was trash in the fire pit and unburied human poo and toilet paper in the surrounding area, but it was much cleaner and cute with it’s raw birch ladder. It’s tiny, but a more pleasant stay. We would give the 2nd cabin 4 stars out of 5.

To his credit, Andrew offered to pay us for the cleaning. We said to not worry about that, but that we would like to get the rental cost of the 1st night credited back, since we spent it outside. Not to his credit, he never replied.

We would have given the 1st cabin we are reviewing 3 stars if it had been clean. As it was, we would give it no stars. Add a 2 stars for the ride to the second cabin, but lose one for not responding regarding a credit. All in all, 1 star for this cabin experience.

I can see potential for this rental to be a great stay with some TLC and less rodent issues. With the good reviews, it must’ve been better once. I’ve reviewed as honestly as possible to help people get an accurate view. We wouldn’t have booked if we’d known.

I was lucky to find this. Thanks Andrew!

Wonderful. You have to be a bit brave to do it in the cold months, but more private than I have found at any other cabins. Also well stocked with food supplies, and some interesting books. Andrew has my gratitude.

Great place to stay!

  • 4 von 5

The take away:

1) Very responsive and friendly owner. When we experienced trouble he communicated with us every step of the way.

2)This is a great cabin to stay in if you like rustic camping. If you don't mind using an outhouse, cooking with gas, and filtering your water then we highly recommend!

3) Very charming and well-stocked cabin.

**However, we found the cabin in poor condition.

The people before us couldn't be bothered to walk 50 feet to the outhouse, and they decided doing their business on the path surrounding the house was somehow acceptable. They also went INSIDE the outdoor fire pit. I'm at a loss of words for the insane amount of disrespect. The owner, Andrew (we don't blame, clearly not his fault,) was very responsive and apologetic.

**The water pump also did not work after multiple tries. Andrew did his best to walk us through a handful of things to try, but in the end it just didn't work. Luckily, we're backpackers, and we had brought our water filtration system with us.

In the end, we had an amazing time at the cabin celebrating my husband's birthday. It is secluded and beautiful and just what we were looking for. It was so much fun chopping wood (there was plenty already chopped--but what's the fun in that!) and playing board games by the stove. We hope others will enjoy it as much as we did.

Vermieter-Kommentar: Thank you for your fair and reasonable review. The 5% of guests who are disrespectful are a problem we haven't figured out how to avoid. Fortunately they are few, but even so, they damage our reputation which is serious harm. We have been brainstorming solutions, and we plan to try this, posting o the cabin door this notice: "It’s the honor system: Asyou know, we can’t come after every guest to clean the cabin, we rely on you to leave it ready for the next guest and take all trash, empty propane canisters and water bottles. In the rare event the last guest has not taken care of these things for you before they left, please let us know promptly and we will be happy to compensate you for making things right. Thank you, Andrew and Chloe For you, who found the cabin not in good shape, while it doesn't make it right, it does make the statement that we are willing to compensate you, and, for us, it gives us the heads up so we can write a review of the bad guest so that other hosts can avoid booking them.
