We had a great October half-term week here- the autumn colours were fantastic, and we paid for our annual National Trust Subscription in one week as there are so many great NT places to visit within 45 minutes drive of the Barn. We also got Glyndbourne tickets for La Traviata (40 minutes drive away, and a great introduction to opera for teenagers too) - NB in the Autumn the operas start at 4pm and generally finish by 7pm. Also check out the AA/Ordinance Survey book "50 walks in Sussex" and pack wellies ready for the muddy paths in the autumn, as there are dozens of good walks nearby with great views. The Barn is quiet - set back from the road, comfortable, warm, with plenty of hot water in the shower and with great big fluffy towels. Despite the autumn weather, we didn't need the log fire. The internet was good (suitable for teleconferences) and there are two sofas and another easy chair for an evening's reading (the local Nat Trust places all have good secondhand book shops so all of us came away with enough new reading to keep us busy to Christmas!)The view from the barn out over the fields and valley is beautiful; do get up early in the autumn to see the low laying mist and meet the three friendly pheasants that gather on the lawn each morning. Overall it is a landscape photographer's / artist's heaven here. The beds, pillows and linen are great - we slept well. The main room has a king size bed - and the second room is very comfortable for one person - or two friendly children (friendly, because if you have the 2 single beds in the room there isn't much room to walk between the beds). In the village there are several pubs, two basic food shops (one in the petrol station and so open late) and a butcher's open each day to 1pm. We stopped at Uckfield on the way and did a big Tesco shop (there is a Waitrose there too).If you are a foodie - note that you get a good full-sized oven and 4 ring gas stove with lots of pots, pans, and cooking implements as well as a microwave and toaster and kettle and lots of work surfaces and a small but effective dishwasher. With all the farm shops and vinyards nearby there is plenty to try out; the local apple stuffed pork sausages are a hit!Our hosts were wonderful - with a cake ready for our arrival and the central heating switched on and a basket full of guides to near everything you could hope to see in Sussex! Very many thanks!Pets - yes you can bring one, but we didn't. However I'm pleased to say that the cleaning was fantastic here as there wasn't a sight of even a single strand of fur anywhere. There is a big screen TV - but we had so much to do this week that it was pretty much unused. Now that's the sign of a great family holiday!Overall - the Barn is exactly what we wanted for a week away and we would all be happy to head back for another week there! If you don't have children in tow - then also book it for a romantic countryside getaway!
