Unique personal retreat space
St Michaels Mission is an amazing place. The architecture, grounds, and energy are unique and were the perfect setting I needed for a personal retreat to work on quiet contemplation and business planning. I had everything I needed. Wi-fi in my room was great and I was even able to log in to Netflix on the tv in my room. This mission had everything I needed and was very clean. It is a work in progress and reminded me of the years I spent at our family cottage - mix 'n match plates and linens, etc. but I was very impressed at how clean and comfortable the space was. I have to mention that because I was alone on the second floor, it was a bit spooky after dark, but not threatening. With others around, it would be much more comfortable. Korey does everything to make the stay welcoming and I really appreciated the tour of the church and other buildings. I am considering the Mission as the venue for a yoga retreat so I was definitely impressed. If you are looking for a unique getaway with peace and quiet - choose this space.
We were a group of 12 moms and were looking for a place to hold our annual weekend get-away. St. Michael's Mission was so much more than we had expected. We kayaked on Hemlock Lake, hiked through the woods, sat on the front lawn and read, walked through the Grotto's, watched the ND game, cozied up to a roaring campfire, walked to Eagle Crest Winery(twice), and cooked and ate GREAT food. The history of the mission is spellbinding and the location and uniqueness were perfect for our needs. Korey was a wonderful host and answered all our questions VERY quickly. We will definitely be back and can't wait to see the place again. Thank-you for everything Korey!
A great place for me and my group!
This worked out so great for our little group of 15 adults convoying in 4 cars. We all knew the mission house was dormitory style and enjoyed our time there.
Korey was very helpful and did anything and everything possible for our needs - especially a midnight call to unclog a toilet!
We had a full kitchen that accommodated us for breakfast and dinner. We couldn't all sit at one table but for some of us we didn't mind standing and eating. We took turns for others to sit after awhile. The bedrooms (mostly quite big) and bathrooms are as described however the bathroom my wife and I were using needs some work done but still useable. I know a couple of the bathrooms were in great shape. Overall the place was quite clean.
There is no HVAC system - each room has an air-conditioner or a portable electric heater. Overall the mission house still needs work - this is not a hotel/motel style nor will you get that type of service. There is one man on duty that takes care of the place and Korey has his hands full.
Unfortunately we were only there for two nights and didn't have sufficient time to spend and explore the St Michael acreage but we did visit the Eagle Crest Winery.
Please be aware I'm giving this a 4 star rating because it really met our needs and wants.
I used to live there so it was just a trip down memory lane.its a work in progress. lots of things still left to do but very enjoyable. Korey is an excellent host and you won’t find any better place for reunion get together or just a time out.
Loads of space !
We had our family reunion at the Mission and it is perfect for us! Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, a stage for our annual play, a large front yard for Kickball and just the right blend of history, mystery and nature. We hiked to the lake and back to the Grottoes and have the scrapes and bee stings to show for it. No worries though, we would and did do it again!
Korey is a wonderful host, friendly and helpful. I met with him about 2 weeks prior to check in to get the lay of the land. He met us the first day upon arrival, and then was super-accessible by text or phone if we had questions. Some of our group asked to stay an additional night and he accommodated our request.
The facility is not fancy but it is in good working order and with 2-3 kitchens and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms was more than adequate.
There is no swimming but there is nearby Vitale Park. For a change of pace, Eagle Crest Vineyard is next door and Will and Kaylynn were very friendly, knowledgeable and engaging.
Definitely would book the Mission again!
Karen, Thanks so much, i very much enjoyed having your family here and look forward to having you come again.
Exactly what we expected
We thought we'd find an interesting old property, perhaps a bit spooky, peaceful, and definitely remote. That's the Mission. The feeling of history was palpable, and we loved exploring the property and finding so much that seemed untouched since mid-century. Our room was appropriately cozy (we got in late and Korey did a great job of explaining how to get in and warming up our room in advance - it was a chilly November weekend!), which was perfect given how large and empty the building was. We loved the giant kitchen just down the hall, and the feeling of having the space to ourselves. We could also imagine how fun it'd be to bring a group (couples and/or families).
The highlight for us was exploring the Grottos, which are really extensive. Hard to believe how much work went into them! Be ready for some scrambling, and be careful - it's a ruin and not meant for regular strolling. We had to sign a waiver, and once we got there I could see why. We also spent a good amount of time at the nearby Letchworth State Park and ate at a highly recommended restaurant, the Ember Woodfire Grill (crowded - definitely make a reservation, pretty good).
Things to know: they have a loooong way to go before the place is fully updated. Things are certainly functional, and it is clearly a very solid, well-built structure, but much of it literally looks like it hasn't been touched in 50 years. Don't expect luxury or modern accommodations and you won't be disappointed. They make a practice of leaving / sharing between guests (there was a nearly-full six pack of Corona in the fridge and some shampoos in the shower). I liked that - felt more homey - but some may find that strange. Bring your sense of adventure, and read up on the Mission in advance to better appreciate its story. Korey is really responsive and helpful in this regard - he sent me a lot of information.
When it was time to go, we didn't want to leave, and have already discussed our return. Like I said, it's not for everyone, but it was perfect for the little "escape from reality" that we were craving!
