A Perfect Escape!
If you’re looking for a total escape from modern life, yet with a small town reassuringly close by – and the perfect beaches, atmosphere and great restaurants of Cefalu only half an hour’s drive away – Villa Paropo is just right.
The villa is built on a secluded hillside among fragrant shrubs, citrus and olive trees. As a group of six adults and three small children, we rented the expansive upper floor, with its own private balcony with distant sea view.
The pictures in the advert were not misleading in any way. It really was as promised! Everything was immaculately clean and meticulously maintained. Kitchen facilities were adequate and typical of a self-catering apartment. (My only wish would have been for a dishwasher and washing machine.)
On our arrival at the approximate location, we called Gianfranco (the owner), who kindly came to meet us on his motorbike. (This is just as well, as we’d never have found the place otherwise!) The villa is accessed via a steep dirt-track, eventually leading to a generous parking area under an ancient olive tree – where you step out into perfect tranquillity and the sound of cicadas.
Proceeding through the cool hallway and up the marble staircase, we were delighted to find that the villa offered all we had wished for. The owners had even made us a cake! Gianfranco explained everything to us, including rules of the swimming pool – which his father cleaned every morning.
Gianfranco and his parents are lovely people, and I wish we could have spent more time with them. One day, they even brought us a plate of figs from their garden! (How often do you get given fresh figs from a private estate in Sicily?)
A word or two about Collesano (the nearest town). It’s a sleepy place, probably much as it was 100 years ago! At roughly a mile away it’s within walking distance, with a reasonable supermarket on the approach. There’s a great little cafe nearby, where they were glad to sell us beers and their entire tray of home-made focaccia pizza! The town is very photogenic and you’ll get some fantastic shots just by wandering at random.
Cefalu needs no introduction – but don’t let your sat-nav. take you through Campofelice di Roccella or Cefalu Old Town!!!
If you wish to see anything of Sicily from this location, you absolutely will need a car.
But, if you simply want to relax and get away from everything, it’s perfect.
I would love to return to Villa Paropo; maybe one day we will.
Had a perfect time staying here.
Lovely accommodation and spacious. Children loved the pool. The welcome from the owners was great. Really enjoyed authentic sicily.
Totally relaxing with lots to do and see
Super family holiday in Sicily
We had a really lovely time staying at this villa with a group of 9 people (5 adults & 4 children). We stayed in the ground floor apartment. There are 3 floors with the owners parents living on the middle floor & another holiday let apartment on the top floor. The ground floor apartment of 4 bedrooms was great for us, also nice and cool as the windows have bug nets which mean they can be left open at night (also being in the mountains helps with the temperature). The outdoor terrace is large and shaded which was great for eating out for a large group. The grounds are extensive, mostly set aside for fruit/vegetable growing, the pool area is also great for swimming or lazing around. The location is charming with the villa close to Collesano in the mountains. Plenty to explore both in the mountains or along the coast and further afield if you have time. We had a great time eating (lots of great reasonable places to eat out), diving, snorkelling, sightseeing, hanging out, etc.
Beautiful villa with amazing views
I want to say just one thing - would like to return to the villa again and again. very comfortable locations in the the mountains, lots of fresh air, big swimming pool, big terrace for dinner. Amazing nature around the villa. comfortable parching, very friendly owners. Near by a lots of supermarket and village market, not so far from the see. I recommend all to visit and spend a holiday on it with the family or with the friends. My best wishes to the owners.
Lovely pool area and in quiet rural setting
Visiting this villa was an amazing (very good) experience. The villa is in the grounds adjacent to the main house where Gianfranco's parents live. The pool is about 20 metres away and was immaculately clean.
We visited with our son and family for a week in the summer; some of their luggage had been lost but was eventually delivered to an office about 15 minutes away. Gianfranco's dad took it on himself to pick it up for us. Truly we were very grateful and impressed by the willingness to help.
Gianfranco speaks reasonably good English. His parents speak as much English as I speak Italian which doesn't say much for me.
We loved staying there but downside might be I suppose 2 things : one was initially finding the place but that seems to be a common thing in Sicily. The other might be the location --- wonderfully rural but 15 minutes from the main Cefalu coast road.
Would we go again? Absolutely yes if we were a party of from 5 up to 10.
