nice balcony with amazing view, interesting area.
clean and good equipped flat.
We really enjoyed this property, the kitchen had everything we needed. The entire place was in excellent working condition and was spotless. Ericka was very friendly and helpful and apologetic for us having to wait an hour at the house at check in. It was partly our fault for not having email or cell phone to let her know we were there. I had said we would arrive at 2 and we did but she thought we would contact as we got closer. I finally went to the grocery store and borrowed a phone. That was the only real miss with our experience. This property is hard to get to in a normal car, do rent a 4X4 especially if you are in rainy season. It is a steep, bumpy, dirt road. Also, it is rural: a small town. There was a lot of music played, children at play, roosters at all hours, many dogs barking, monkey sounds, birds - it is not quiet. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper and eye patches because the house is bright and airy during the day but still very light at night and at sunrise because of the uncovered upper windows. It is also cooler here at night than on the coast so a sweater and pants made time on the upper deck more comfortable. There are many great places to sit (rockers, swing seats, wooden swings, hammocks) and enjoy the view!
We loved our stay in the top level unit of the house. The house itself is beautiful inside and wide open to the amazing views. Best of all was being in the heart of such a friendly, peaceful community of El Castillo. Don't book this place if you're not willing to truly take in all the neighborhood sites and sounds - and yes, there are all sorts of sounds at night with early bird roosters and dogs who apparently wanted "celebrate" a full moon!!?? This isn't AC blasting, shut off from the world living - and Amen to that!! We really felt welcome in such a beautiful town, with added hospitality from the local house caretakers who'll answer to your needs as they arrise. Take the horseback ride up the mountain to the waterfall..que rico!!
My wife and I stayed here for three nights and loved it. It's just remote enough to be convenient but detached. The hosts are very kind and accommodating. The views are excellent and the home is very clean and comfortable. We felt safe the entire time and only slightly annoyed by the sometimes howling dog nearby :) I would definitely recommend this spot to any friends wanting to adventure around Arenal, zip lines, or hot springs.
We stayed at the property for four nights in January. The two rainy days hindered the view, but the two days of sunshine made up for it. The sounds of countless birds singing and the sights of the hummingbirds and other local birds were wonderful. I have to say though, if you are a light sleeper remember your earplugs, as it seems everyone in the area has a dog that barks...and barks...and barks (the only real downside, except for the exceptionally rough road in). I would definitely recommend the place, but be sure you rent a four wheel drive. Oh, and Ericka, the host, is exceptionally helpful and gracious.
My family and I (Me, wife, two sons ages 8 & 10) recently stayed in both the Upper and Lower Suites and we *really* enjoyed it. It's a real trick to get to it at night, but we made our way there. Even in the rain, the hosts Tomas, Hanna, and Ana made sure we arrived and got settled in. They were wonderful people. We had breakfast with them at La Gavilana on our first morning there; fresh eggs, fresh greens, fresh peach palm, fresh peach palm bread, coffee, tea, fermented smoothies... My 10 year old said it was the best breakfast he'd ever had!
Back to the house...
Both floors of the home are perfect studio apartments. The stairs that connects the two are outside (spiral staircase on one side, regular stair case on the front side). There were chairs and hammocks outside for hanging out. The wifi worked (allowing us to stay a little connected). There was no TV (which was great - it wasn't needed). The only thing I would change is the beds - they were hard (I sleep on a firm bed - these beds are hard.)
The views were AMAZING!!! The house is on a hillside... You are ALWAYS looking at Arenal Volcano and Lake... as well as forest, the village, birds, flowers, gardens... I woke up one night at 2am, and I could make out the silhouette of the volcano in the darkness. I hope I never forget it.
The sounds were amazing!!! (Even the roosters at 4am seemed to fit into the grand scheme.) The various birds, the monkeys in the distance, the sound of a waterfall, the village dogs barking a little, the rooster at 4am... everything was peaceful to the ears of this big city family... Oh, and you're like us, you'll end up naming the local dogs as you walk/drive up and down the hill.
The village of El Castillo was quaint and everyone was so nice... La Gavilana, the Butterfly Conservatory, the soda, Howlers, Chef Benedict's... everywhere we went, we felt like real guests... and we didn't make it everywhere, as it rained every day while we were here, and we enjoyed it. I keep thinking of coming back during the less rainy season to experience the area on foot a bit more. This house and the village of El Castillo are a perfect place to relax and live Puro Vida for a bit.
I definitely recommend this house in this village... I want to be there right now.
Thank you Andy, Linda, Tomas, Hannah, Anna, and Mikey!
