Eine Erfahrung wie keine andere!
This palapa was the highlight of our stay! This isn't your run of the mill hotel room. It's full of character and charm. Staying here intensified the feeling of being a part of this wonderful community. Finding this place was like winning the lottery for us. We try very hard to avoid overly touristy, modern hotels or short term rentals. When we travel, we want to feel as if we are staying somewhere authentic and unique. Casa Darya was just that and more!!
We traveled here as 2 adults and 1 child. Jose was wonderful to communicate with prior to our arrival, and met us as promised once we got off the ferry. He was so easy to get in touch with, and helped with any questions we had during our stay. He was so friendly and caring!
We had more than enough space for the 3 of us. The decor was perfect and felt very traditional. We instantly felt at home! As a previous poster mentioned, this is more like a large studio in the fact that it is an "open air" floor plan. The palapa was located in a way that made it feel very private and secluded. Even though we were right next to Holbox dreams. We enjoyed laying in the hammock each night listening to the live music from a nearby hostel.
If you are looking for lush, hotel amenities, then Casa Darya isn't for you. There are plenty of hotels that will fill that need for you. But if you enjoy staying in a place that feels like home, is comfortable, unique and very local, then Casa Darya is for you! I hope to return here every year! I also hope places like this continue to thrive in Holbox before tourism takes over!
We loved staying in this casa right by the sea. As you step out of the gate, you can see the beach. We often cooked dinners in the palapa and ate them on the beach watching the sunset (worth bringing Tupperware). We stayed there with our baby and were given everything we needed (high chair, cot and baby bath). Chuy managed the casa and we couldn't have asked for a better host, really helpful and a lovely guy. Highly recommend for staying in self-catering on a smaller budget as it's very close to town and the beach for the money.
For the record, the bathroom does have a door. But it's a saloon-style door, which is more then we had in any of the other palapas we stayed in during our other trip to Mexico. We also found it quite spacious but we do live in a small 2 bed in London - roughly the same size! The pictured sun lounger (just one) appeared to be exclusively ours. There are sun loungers for rent at the beach but we never used them. Golf carts are often parked outside the gate (ie in the road, mostly by guests of Holbox Dream Hotel opposite) but were never directly outside the palapa in the week we were there. A few maintenance men for the larger property on the grounds use the gate but never came right past our window and only a few came and went each day. I'm not sure whether that had changed, or we got lucky. We were slightly put off by the other review as you can imagine, but our experience was vastly different.
We will probably stay again when we next go back to Holbox, assuming it still meets our needs.
This property is listed as a one bedroom but its not, its one big room. This wouldn't have been a problem for us as a couple except for the fact that the bathroom does not have a real door, so there is little privacy. The listing says that there are chairs in "our" space on the beach and shows a picture of lounge chairs and shade. This exists--for the compound--but while the other two houses on the property could use it, I was told I couldn't as I was staying in the palapa. To add insult to injury, the space went virtually unused the week I was there and a guy set up chairs and umbrellas on the public beach right in front for which he charged 100 pesos a day. Finally, the garden shown in the picture is actually an entryway through which people staying in and cleaning the other houses walk (do no privacy as they go right by the window). On a number of occasions, it was even used as a parking lot for golf carts and motorcycles.
