Fun at the Floyd Farmhouse

  • 5 von 5

We stayed at the Floyd Farmhouse for all of November and much of December 2016. I apologize if my notes are somewhat dated, but this stay was followed by a cross country trip with limited internet connection until recently. The comments are predominantly geared towards those considering a fall/winter stay -- make sure you search the internet to learn how to operate a wood burning stove! And brush up on your BBQ technique -- we used the large smoker on the back porch to prepare our Thanksgiving turkey.

We had breakfast a few times at the Blue Ridge Restaurant in downtown Floyd. Talk about a local hangout -- people were rearranging the tables, visiting each other, clearing their own tables, and chowing down on hearty southern fare. We did not eat anything else the rest of that day. Another favorite eatery was the Tuggles Gap motel, which conveniently serves breakfast all day. Oddfellows in downtown Floyd also served some tasty food, although they have apparently discontinued their live music.

We completed several significant ascents, starting with Buffalo Mountain; at 3972 feet it is the highest point in Floyd County, and about 2 miles from the farmhouse. Since it is the highest point, you have a 360 degree panoramic view -- and almost no other people because nobody's ever heard of Buffalo Mountain. Another day we completed the ascent of 3572 foot Rocky Knob. Actually, we climbed both mountains twice. The only annoying thing is that, despite the balmy November weather and the late fall foliage, they have locked all the bathrooms at the Visitor Center, picnic area, and even the Mabry Mill exhibit area! They could at least have some of those dark pit toilets that they don't have to worry about freezing for the season ...

Anyway, the predominant hiking feature here is the Rock Castle Gorge; during previous summer visits it was usually too hot to consider doing any hiking here, but in November this year there was little excuse to avoid its 10.8 miles long moderate to strenuous loop trail. Be aware, the average hiking pace (for us, at least) in this terrain is approximately 1 mile per hour; on the rougher stretches, it devolved into .5 to.75 miles per hour. Adding to the technical challenges were the extreme amounts of fallen leaves, which, combined with rocks and tree roots, made slipping and sliding an additional hazard whether traveling up, but mostly down.

I had a few other notes, but apparently I've hit the review maximum number of words

Great location and very comfortable

  • 5 von 5

We visited in late December. We loved the cozy house. It was very comfortable for our family of 6. We enjoyed the open space for running around outside. We especially enjoyed the wood stove heat and outdoor sauna. The house is just 2 miles from buffalo mountain - the high point of the area with short trail to the top. The parkway was empty and beautiful for day hikes. We hope to return some day. Highly recommend

Stayed two months. Great experience. Rural but only 20 minutes from Floyd, Va which has surprisingly good shopping, dining, library and music. Biggest problem we had initially was getting accustomed to the quiet and serenity of the farmhouse. Highly recommend.

Very comfortable and well appointed.

  • 5 von 5

We have been here a month and have decided to extent our stay for another month. Comfortable, well appointed, quiet. Close to Floyd, Va which is an inviting and fun town. Owner is very attentive. Recommend you leasing the farmhouse for a weekend, a week or, like us, two months.

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 von 5

Our time at the Floyd Farmhouse was absolutely wonderful! Our extended stay was one of the most relaxing, enjoyable times of the summer. We enjoyed the privacy of the house and the beautiful yard while we relaxed on the deck. The house not only has very comfortable furnishings, but also unique, such as the table in the kitchen, rocking chairs, etc.. that complimented the history of the house. The house was very clean and well maintained. We appreciated the owner's availability to us. He was thoughtful and willing to take care of anything we needed. We felt we were living back in time while having all amenities of today. The house was perfect for the two of us, but could also be a great place for a family get away. We enjoyed the surrounding area while there. The owner offered a list of places to visit while there, and we had fun going to the place recommended, the wineries, dinner at Chateau Morrisette, breakfasts at Mabry Mill.We even climbed to the top of Buffalo Mountain! We would highly recommend this property to anyone that would like to spend time in an unique, well maintained historical farmhouse near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our time there is a fond memory and we look forward to staying there again. Thank you so much! Jerry and Lucy King

Tucked away cottage if your looking for a quiet stay with comfortable space. Our experience was less then expected with some issues. We didn't have Roku streaming tv (was not hooked up upon our arrival) we attempted to hook it up with no success. Windows didn't have any coverings of any kind, only 1 portable fan worked (no air conditioning which I knew in advance). Went to use the sauna where several mice occupied the space and had to sweep them out with their dirt to sit in it. We also had to hall our own trash out. :/

Vermieter-Kommentar: I am sorry your stay was not as you expected. The roku had been blown out by a lightening storm which I alerted you to before you arrived. It is now replaced and comoletely functioning. Your having to take your own garbage to the local dumpsters is pretty common in this area and I've not ever had a guest complain. The house is in great shape and the photos depict it accurately and completely. I hope you have better luck at another place next time you visit this area.
