Stayed with Rosemary in February of 2014. Had a wonderful, lovely time on Bordeaux Mountain. Of all of the islands, St. John is the best for us. One of these days (hopefully soon) we'll get back Rosemary's place. Wonderful accommodations; beautiful host.
FYI, I just discovered the VRBO site doesn't allow reviews longer than 12 months of an arrival date, so I chose a 2015 date just to allow me to post this review.
My partner and I had a very relaxing time at Hummingbird! This house is a private jungle retreat with a beautiful view! The house itself is very quirky and there are some very nice handmade wooden touches. One whole side of the house is basically screens, so there is a really nice breeze and no need for AC. The deck is really nice, and we cooked our own meals on the grill every day. The outdoor shower is neat with sea shells in the floor! We were about a 20 minute drive from most beaches. A few things to be aware of: As others mentioned and as shown in the photos, the steps down to the front entrance and also the steps inside up to the bedroom are really precarious. The mattress was very springy and we found it difficult to sleep on. Bring bug spray! There are mosquitoes everywhere (as there are everywhere else on St. John). The house has screens, so the bugs don't get in, but the bathroom is outside. There is no lock on the door. Being from New York, this made us a bit worried, but it seems like a totally safe place.
We also rented a car from Rosemary's daughter (Jessica) at Sunshine Jeep, which we were very happy with. Jessica met us at the ferry dock with the rental car when we arrived, and she showed us the way to the house.
Overall, this place was great and absolutely beats staying in a resort.
My fiancé and I stayed here for 7 days and absolutely fell in love! Not only is the house itself unique, but we felt like we were living in a jungle. There is so much wildlife and so many cool plants and flowers. The frogs and insects will play you beautiful tunes all night long and the rain showers were just heavenly. It was surprisingly very cool at night and just right during the days. Waking up here was so relaxing that some days we didn't leave the house until almost noon! We will totally rent this home again in the future. Thanks so much Rosemary :)
This gem is a true arts and craft (ship cabin) style bungalow nestled into the highest reaches of Bordeaux mountain. The ever cheerful and charming Rosemary met us at The Cruz Bay dock with our jeep rental and showed us the way to this nicely isolated slice of heaven. It is compact but beautifully designed with many unique touches including a bedroom space with pleasant soft breezes and nightly sounds of frogs and birds. It is rustic but always enjoyably so, and we were thoroughly delighted with our 9 day stay. It is right in the center of the island allowing easy access to the many beaches and the excellent restaurants of both Cruz and Coral Bay.
We stayed here for our honeymoon and we loved it! I was a little skeptical of the outdoor bathroom/shower but it was totally fine. The open windows let you hear all the night time noises, which I loved. I was worried that we'd be hot with no AC, but all the windows let enough breeze in and I was even a little chilly with the fan on at night. This house is definitely not for everybody, but if it is for you, you'll love it! Beautifully built, very unique, gorgeous views at every angle. We loved watched the little sugar birds in the morning and the morning visits from Smokey, Rosemary's dog. We had a wonderful time! Thank you Rosemary!
Our St John vacation was made even lovelier by our stay at Hummingbird. Rosemary was delightful and went out of her way to make sure that ALL our needs were met. The house is charming, with pituresque views of the North. There are steps to be aware of...but who's in a rush anyway on "Island Time"? We had plenty of room for just the two of us, and were want for nothing while in the house. Our 15th anniversary away from the kids (for the first time!) could not have been more post card perfect. Rosemary has a wealth of information in her guest books, I highly suggest reading them through. The Jeep rental was a MUST to get up Bordeaux Mt, and the space away from bustling areas was a welcomed retreat after being out and about during the day. Thank you Rosemary for a spectacular vacation home to get away to. This trip was easily the BEST 9 days we have had in years!
Aside from Hummingbird, we loved visiting:
*Little Lameshur Bay
*The Petroglyphs hike. Take water and allot for at least 4 hours to hike up, stop, and hike back. Bring appropriate supplies!
*The Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins. Look for Charles in the community gardens. Fantastic individual.
*restaurants...Aqua Bistro in Coral Bay and De Coal Pot in Cruz Bay. Colombos Smoothies
*Hint: buy gallons of water from the Dolphin Market, its less $$ if you buy a box of four. REPEL BUG SPRAY A MUST
*BVI tour with Pirates Penny. Captain Galen is a HOOT! "Don't Be Scared!"
*L&L Jeep Rental. Great Service. Pay for the parking, it's worth it!
*Mongoose Junction for Souvenirs and shopping.
