The Neighborhood:
The Beauport Historic District, established in 1964 and expanded in 1985, covers a formerly rural area of approximately 96 hectares. It extends for nearly six kilometers and crosses the former municipalities of Giffard, Beauport, Villeneuve, and Courville. The area is bounded to the west by Rue des Martyrs, and to the east by the junction of Avenue Royale and Boulevard des Chutes.
The historic district occupies the Beauport hillside, formed by terraces offering panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River and Île d'Orléans. It includes more than 650 residential and institutional buildings, reflecting architecture from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The majority of these buildings are located along the winding, ascending west-to-east path formed by Chemin Royal and Avenue Royale. The side streets, set diagonally off the main road, recall the orientation of the original plots.
The historic district is located in the Beauport municipal district of Quebec City. It includes two listed historic monuments: the Girardin and Tessier-Dit-Laplante houses. It also includes several Euro-Quebec sites listed in the Inventory of Archaeological Sites of Quebec.
