We walked into the apartment and my son and I were overcome with the smell of smoke. There was a large sign in the dining room explaining their non-smoking policy. I immediately called the rental company and was told to "open a door to air it out". This was August in Houston! It was near a hundred degrees outside. After explaining that this was not a solution, I was told to look for air freshener in a cabinet. Again, not a solution! I asked to speak to the property manager multiple times and was told that was not an option. No solution was given other than I could cancel my reservation, but that there was no guarantee for a refund. We were there for Junior Olympics and my son is a runner. We both felt the effects of the smoke in our lungs within 15 minutes of being in the apartment. We had been up since 2:30am for an early flight and were so ready to have a peaceful evening, but instead we needed to regroup and find a completely different place to stay immediately. I contacted VRBO as the option to cancel my reservation was not working. I explained the situation in detail. VRBO was not even able to talk to the actual property manager. VRBO was able to cancel the reservation from their end which essentially "forced" the hand of the rental company to refund me the money as the reason VRBO listed was "property damage or natural disaster". I received an email saying the host had canceled the reservation. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is that I got a refund.
