I recently stayed on the Northern Cross for 5 days with my mother and 13 year old daughter. It was her dream to stay aboard a boat and we are so happy we chased that dream of hers! It was an adventure of the sweetest kind. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and at home! The marina is tucked away in a quiet and yet convenient location where the people are kind, the water is inviting and the boat is accommodating. We swam off the back of the boat in the marina our first day, within the first five minutes to be perfectly honest, and every morning after. The marina is about 25 feet deep and the water clear so we were able to snorkel a bit, too. You should know that while my daughter was living her dream in the boat, I lived mine in the water because as luck would have it a manatee swam right past the back of the boat while I was floating by the ladder! I found out later that he shows up to swim the marina every so often and we were so honored to have shared the water with him that day! At night we enjoyed games at the dining table and in the AM breakfast from a local spot, Koko’s, on the deck. (You can easily prepare meals in the galley of the boat but we never did.) Oh! And the nights... sleeping with the windows open, the waves lapping at the boat and a salt water breeze to lull us to sleep was magical. We awoke rested each morning. Apparently we had a bit of a “bad weather week” while we were there- it was around 80 and sunny every day but it was a bit too windy to go out much with Paul. Paul is the neighbor, manager, local guy who is happy to help you with anything you may need. If you get a chance to go out with him for an excursion, please do, and consider yourself lucky. What a luxury to have access to a true sailor for excursions! He loves the water, the Keys and he knows his stuff. We went out with him for a sunset tour of the area and for a quick trip to a local favorite, Lorelei. It’s a must if you are in the Keys. We went back for dinner and another sunset later in the week. Lorelei sits right on the water, no shoes required, and as a side note they have the best key lime pie. My daughter made it her mission to try key lime pie from Key West to Key Largo in attempt to find the best one and settled on Lorelei hands down. We visited beaches, state parks, many various stores, shops, museums and so on and while that was great, we were very grateful to have the Northern Cross to come back to each night. Loved our trip!
The Northern Cross was a great experience for my family. The marina facilities were very clean, the people were friendly and the location was a fantastic place to launch our day trips. Communication was super from the owner, Rick, as well as the onsite manager, Paul.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the Northern Cross. The boat more than met our expectations. So relaxing! Marina property very well cared for too. Would recommend anyone needing some r&r try out the Northern Cross.
My husband loved this, but as a woman it was not as attractive for me! We both enjoyed the people who live on the boats, cooking out and hanging around the tiki hut. I found the very narrow dock with no railings that you had to use to get on & off the boat intimidating! The bathrooms, laundry facilities and showers on shore were not far and were clean. The berth/beds are not very comfortable. After 2 weeks of sleeping on them, all had aching backs! (We are in our mid to late 60s). States it sleeps 6, but 4 of them would need to be small children to get that many on board! The residents here are mostly senior citizens who are amazing in the vitality and level of activity they engage in. This being said it is fairly quiet and not a good place for smaller children. The rear berths are very small and claustrophobic. We had 3 adults and that was fine. As you can imagine there is little storage space so the unused berth was great for luggage and extra stuff! We realized that it may have been a better choice to leave most of the luggage in the car, retrieving clothes as needed. Just taking things to the boat over that very narrow dock being part of the reason! The owners were great to work with. My husband conversed with both for various reasons during our stay. Not trying to discourage anyone but wanting you to be more aware of everything that is involved. A shorter stay would have been better for me though my husband was delighted!
Was a trip filled with rich experiences and memories. Boat was a beauty and the gentle rock in the harbor made for some relaxing rest. These folks were great to do business with and would recommend this experience!!!
Our family enjoys slightly off the beaten path travels and this was perfect for a unique and memorable experience. Our teens loved having their own cozy and private berths. We all slept well. The boat is clean and well equipped. Highlights included coffee in the morning and sunset happy hours on the back deck! The property manager, Paul, is very helpful and friendly. He offers various charters for a reasonable fee and I wish we had booked something with him. Next time! The owners are very organized and thorough in all correspondence and sharing of information. The marina is nice and quiet with lots of friendly boaters. The washrooms and showers at the marina were very clean. The use of the communal bbq and tiki hut was a nice bonus. There is lots to do in the area. We enjoyed outings to nearby Founders Park which has a beautiful beach, Olympic size swimming pool, basketball & volleyball and tennis courts. There is also a community centre at Founders Park that runs yoga & exercise classes. There is a fee to get into the park. We went on a snorkelling trip and rented kayaks at John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park. We fed the tarpons at Robbie’s. Grocery stores, movie theatre are close by. We bought fresh seafood at Casa Mar nearby and grilled it on the bbq. A day trip to Key West is recommended also. Harry Harris beach is a few minutes from the boat, however it was still closed due to Hurricane damage. Our stay was a great balance of relaxing on the boat and exploring the area. A perfect family vacation with teenagers.
