Puako paradise
Terrific property for 4 family members-clean, convenient & attractive decor. Gorgeous view from 4th floor & handy to have Puako general store next door. Kitchen is well-equipped & bathrooms are very nice. Close to the best beaches on the island. The complex is very quiet & has many rules & restrictions, so not for everyone, but worked for us. Affordable & comfortable place to stay in Puako.

Mellow location in Puako
We loved this unit! For a low-key vacation the location is ideal, away from tourist areas and close to a local beach. The atmosphere in the complex is quiet, road noise is minimal, and you have the convenience of a general store right next door. The unit was very nicely decorated and well stocked with linens and kitchen essentials. Each of the bedrooms is large and has good closet space. The balcony is wide enough to eat on and the view is lovely. Beach gear included a lot of snorkel gear which saves the hassle and cost of renting it.
The location is remote and any nightlife requires a significant drive, so this is a good spot for those who like to cook at home. All in all, we were very happy with our stay and would come back again!

Our Welcome Book suggests activities and fun things to do nearby. There is dinner and dancing and music at the Blue Dragon in Kawaihae, about 4 miles away. There is night life at the Hapuna Prince, about 2 miles away...and the Mauna Lani, about 3 miles away. The 5 star resorts offer lots of activities and amenities and they are only 5-10 minutes by car.
We hope you come back again and enjoy all of the nearby restaurants: Cafe Pesto, Seafood Bar, Blue Dragon and the Plantation Grill in Kawaihae, 4 miles away. There is also a food court and lots of restaurants at the Queen Shops, the King Shops and the Shops at Mauna Lani, as well as, the Hotel restaurants.

Great Spot on the Island
We enjoyed our stay in Puako at condo 405. The area was beautiful. A short 4 minute drive south down the private road took us to an unbelievable beach for snorkeling. We saw turtles, tons of fish, moray eels, an eagle ray, and an octopus. There was fresh fruit at the condos every day- the bananas were amazing. The view from the fourth level was incredible. The house itself was comfortable and had just about everything you would need. There was snorkel gear for four people- we only had to rent one set. The only issue we had was that the air conditioner in the bedroom did not seem to be working quite right. The water needed to be emptied a couple times a day and it seemed to go off and on more often than it should. We would have loved to stay a lot longer in this peaceful community.

We have gotten new high flow ceiling fans and reworked the AC flow issue so that it can handle really hot humid days. The building only allows AC units on one side so we have come up with a higher air flow system for the condo when there isn’t any trade winds.

Needs updating
Wonderful view, plenty of room for our family of five, 4 adults, one teenager. Unit needs TLC, and a much better cleaning service.Large carpet stain in the living room when we arrived, came right up with a little Resolve and a paper towel. Insufficient supplies, no extra toilet paper, no spices, even salt and pepper
Cheap mirror on the back of the bedroom door broke into a million pieces when the door slammed when a gust of wind came through. This could have caused serious injury. We spent an hour cleaning up all the little pieces, vacumning etc.
Lots of little things broken, drawer pulls in back bedroom, small appliances that did not work in the kitchen. Unit has lots of potential, it just needs some owner care. We own a vacation rental ourselves and know that it takes constant care, providing the customer with the basics and a good management team.

I have forwarded your comments to our cleaning staff so that they will pay better attention to the carpets. Although they are professionally cleaned twice a year, some stains can be spot treated and come right up as you metnioned. Were there any other particular areas that the cleaning was not satisfactory?
I am sorry about the mirror accident! I would be happy to reimburse you for your time in having to clean that up. Had you of called us about it, we could have sent someone there to do it and saved you from the trouble. I will make sure to do another maintenace check to get all those little things fixed up. Which small appliances didn't work? Letting us know these things helps us to be able to repair or replace them. I am sorry for the inconvenience that these things caused you and wish I could have done something more for you while you were here. Please let me know if there is anything else we can do. Beautiful views, beds need attention.
We recently stayed at the Puako Condo and overall had a nice experience, though there are a few things future guests should be aware of.Let’s start with the good: the location is fantastic—peaceful, scenic, and perfectly situated for exploring the Kohala Coast. The ocean view from the lanai is absolutely incredible—sunsets here are something special. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the pool area is clean, quiet, and inviting. You can tell the exterior of the property is well cared for.Inside the unit, however, things felt a bit outdated—particularly the beds. It genuinely felt like we were sleeping on someone’s 20-year-old mattress. The comfort level was noticeably lacking, and the bedding (sheets and blankets) was similarly tired and very cheap-feeling. This was the biggest downside of our stay and something that could be easily improved with some thoughtful investment.Cleanliness was okay overall, but clearly, certain areas like under the couch haven’t been touched in a while—which was a bit off-putting. The air conditioner worked well and was definitely appreciated, but note that only the main bedroom and living room are cooled. The second bedroom gets quite warm, especially at night.All in all, the condo has amazing potential and is in a prime spot. With updated beds and a little more attention to interior detail, it could be a five-star stay. Hope to see those improvements for next time!

Spectacular Views
The views are postcard worthy and the pictures used in this listing don’t do it justice. The complex manager is super friendly and gave us some tips on some things to do. This condo is right across the street from the beach. If you like tide pools there are many to enjoy. I would recommend bringing water shoes. There is also a small market next door to the condo that has some food, cold drinks and scuba/snorkel gear as well. It’s about 80-90 min to Hilo and 20 from the Kona airport. There is a full grocery store 10 min away as well. Up the street there was a food truck that came every day w malasadas (a delicious Hawaiian doughnut) wonderful treats. :-) Mahalo for the memories.

Great view, Nicely furnished
View from the Lanai is amazing (see listing picture) and overall the condo was well furnished/decorated. Kitchen was well appointed -- plenty of dishes, pots, pans, spices, dishwasher, full size fridge, blender, toaster oven, etc. The management company (Island Beach Rentals) was very communicative and stopped by towards the end of the stay to ask if everything was OK. They provided some fresh fruit on move-in, which was a nice touch.
The beach access across the street is close and fun to explore, but it's rocky and doesn't provide much sunbathing / swimming opportunities. That said, it's a very short drive to Beach 69 which offers a beautiful sandy beach with plenty of shade -- that's where I spent most of my time.
Only issue is that there was construction happening on the next door unit (also managed by IBR) which was a bit noisy during the day; though most of the time I was out enjoying the lovely island.
Overall: A+ would definitely return!

Good value
The property management was highly responsive. The unit is clearly well-managed. The prior reviews and comments reflect our experience. This home is a good value. The two smaller bedrooms are very warm at night and their windows are on an exterior hallway which can be noisy. The unit contains a number of personal effects and some clutter but overall is clean and comfortable. The location is excellent with a nice view from the balcony over the rooftops to the ocean. It is fairly well equipped for simple cooking. We really appreciated the prompt attention of the property managers.

Great view, great location, great condo!
Jay was great to work with, we had to adjust our arrival/departure dates a few times and he was very helpful and accommodating. We arrived and found a few essentials missing from the condo so we called Jay and he had the problem remedied quickly! The condo is very well equipped to cook meals, relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean right across the street. The condo was very clean and comfortable. The pool and grounds of the complex are amazing. The entire experience was a 5 star.

Life at the Beach
Overall, our stay was nice. Good location and close proximity to snorkeling and beaches. In fact, some of the best beaches on the island are very close. Having the General Store right next door is great also. The condo is well stocked with dishes, towels, and all kinds of beach paraphernalia.
The condo is advertised as air conditioned. The one in the living room worked but the one in the master bedroom was leaking so bad that it couldn't be used for most of week we were there. When we did have it on, I had to change out towels, wash and dry them, and return them underneath the air conditioner. This created about 3-4 extra washing loads during the week. Neither unit reached the back bedrooms at all. My 2 teenagers were miserable having to sleep on top of their bed covers. Beings there were record high temperatures and no trade winds during our stay, I called the Property Manager and asked for some good fans for those bedrooms. Jay was great in bringing 2 fans to the condo.
Some of the condo rules are pretty onerous also. "Don't make your horn beep when locking your car," "Hand carry all your luggage up the steps to the elevator, don't drag them on the stairs." "Don't talk too loud on the balcony." If you are breaking any of these rules, Sarah, the onsite manager, will be at your door in a flash. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand the necessity of having rules. We just found that these were a lot more uninviting then inviting.
Overall, we would probably stay here again if for nothing else than the location and the sunset views.

Fantastic place!

Tip top on the top!
We have been here before to this condo building. The unit we have rented in the past was booked so we found this one.
We really enjoyed our stay at this unit. We found it in very good condition. We were pleased with the wide assortment of kitchen items. We usually just "move in" and never buy any meals in restaurants other than the first day. Often we find we need something that wasn't in the condo. We bought one thing: a dish cloth. So was really well stocked.
None of us had ever used a microwave-convection combination unit so that was a learning curve. But was ok. The kitchen even has some nice large knives that cut up our pineapples very nicely.
The unit was decorated very nicely. The in unit washer and dryer was so convenient. We used the grill on the lanai and it was wonderful.
There was a nice selection of beach toys, chairs, and some snorkle gear. And beach towels in the closet. We felt right at home.
The best part of all was the view from the lanai. We ate every meal out there so we could see or hear the ocean. We also like the view out the back that looks toward Mauna Kea. We were thrilled to see it have a snow cap.
The Puako General Store had a nice variety of things. Seemed nicer than last trip.
We were sad that there were no sea turtles this trip. We also saw so many other times. They must have been on vacation right now.
We like Beach 69, Hapuna, and the Mauna Kea Beaches. I feel they are some of the nicest in the islands.
We did our usual trip to Hilo and the falls. Stopped at the Volcanoes, watched the waves crash on the north shore and went to the Vanilla Farm for lunch and tour..... a must.
The people at the condo complex are always helpful. Sara was happy to see us again and keeps the place looking top top.
Everything was good overall. I was probably the least happy with the management folks. Didn't seem to have the warm Hawaiian Spirit. I never had a bad experience, just basically no experience with them. Guess that isnt quite correct. They had apparently placed a large pointsettia plant in the unit to make it festive. Make sure you give them lots of notice to call you back if you leave a message. I did find I like it better renting from the owners, rather than a property management company where you are just another customer.
There were three couples of us and we all would certainly return again to the Kohala Waikoloa area again.

Wonderful Vacation Home
We had a great time at this condo. There was plenty of room for 6 adults. The condo was clean and well-kept. Would be happy to recommend this location to family and friends. The waether was a little warm at night but the property manager brought fans to help cool the unit. There were many things to do both locally - the beach was just a few minutes walk - as well as many activities on the island. We could easily have stayed for two weeks.

Beautiful 4th floor Unit with ocean view
Dear Ward and Jo,
Tonights is our last night and we are really reluctant to leave. Tomorrow we return to the cold and snow flurries in NOva Scotia, CAN. How strange it must be for you to share your home with people you may never meet. We have loved your condo. The renovations are wonderful. Really everything was perfect!! You are very thoughtful hosts and we appreciate all the special touches. We would love to return. My husband and I love Hawaii and last year discovered Puako. We stayed in Hale Aloha a little cottage on the ocean and were enchanted by this very special neighborhood. This year we decided to invite our son & daughter to experience the magic of Hawaii. Your 3 bedroom condo was just what we needed. Lost of space for everyone. We have had a wonderful two weeks together. We were very impressed with the cleaning staff who prepared the condo for our visit. it was immaculate. We will send a stellar review for the website & Trip advisor.

The view from the 4th floor is spectacular. Photos accurate of condo size. Plenty of sitting room in living area. Property could have been cleaner, floors/carpet/couch. Kitchen is very small but equipped with the basics. The manager of condo is superb, very helpful, property exceptionally neat. Excellent location for walking next to ocean, sunsets, next door to fully stocked community grocery. Tenants and other visitors very friendly. Extras in condo for beach; chairs, snorkeling gear. Twin beds should be updated.

A great value in a great location.
For a group of people this is an ideal place to stay... plenty of space, close to beaches, centrally located on the kohala coast. Whenever we have friends visiting the islands we tell them to stay here.

Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is a small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door.
Puako is conveniently located for visiting all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 3 hour drive from Kohala.
Several fabulous beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding.
The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 40 minutes, Kailua Kona 50 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.

The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 150 feet from your doorstep with crystal blue water that is 72-76 degrees year round.
Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.
Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.
The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!
