After deciding to visit the other islands in the bahamas, my husband and I and our three children decided on the out island Cat Island, we wanted to relax and get away from any from the crowds and resort deistractions and be able concentrate on a really nice family vacation. We were so happy with the choice of cat island, it has such a unique charm of solitude combined with the most gorgeous turquiose waters I have ever seen. The house we rented is called the Point House, it was so nice to have as much space for my teenage son and my younger girls chose thier favorite rooms immediately, my son happily chose the st floor master on the otherside of the house:)!! My husband and I had the top floor master with private deck. The kitchen was so amazing and modern, newly renovated and luxurious. I was so pleased everything about the house mades us perk up and realize we were going to have best stay. The house comes with a caretaker his name is Reynold Butler, he and my husband hit it off immediately, they made a plan to catch bonefish in a tidal creek in walking distance, Reynold made this trip so exactly what we were looking forward to, he brought us to a remote part of the island you can oly get to by boat or foot, it was absolutly breath taking, he also took us deepsea fishing; my son was able to land a tuna, he is already insisting on coming back next year to catch a wahoo. Reynolds also showed my girls where all the sand dollars were hiding, they are so proud of thier collection. He took such good care of us, he even brought us to the regatta site which has all these delectable island treats, we definately recommend the "cracked conch" and the conch fritters, I recommend the fresh daiquiris-it was like a wonderful postcard dining along the white sandy beach watching the sunset.
We give this experience 5 stars with staying at this beautiful gem of a house that sits on top of a high oceanside cliff that I enjoyed all day on one of its amazing vista decks watching my husband and kids play on the beach and in the sea. The cat island people were very friendly, the atmoshpere is quiet and layed back. There is even a little store you can bike ride to pick up those forgotten last minute items. We are already planning on coming again next year. This was our favorite most unforgettable top notch vacation!!
An incredible story.....
In May of 2014, my wife and I went to The Point House on Cat Island. We were scheduled for 8 days. While travelling from the US to the Bahamas, I got deathly ill. After two days on Cat Island, I was medically evacuated back to the States with severe congestive heart failure.
All of the beauty and the expenses to get to this paradise seemed lost.
The home owner, Dr. Curt Bannister, never stopped caring about me or my family. After I got better (14 to 15 months), Dr. Bannister offered to let us resume our anniversary trip back to Cat Island and Bain's Town.
Boy are we glad we went back and resumed this trip 18 months later. The place is just spectacular! The views of the Atlantic Ocean are tops. The island, though ravished by hurricanes and tropical storms annually, is simply filled with beauty.
Let me tell you, the Island people are first class and the kindest hosts of any place in the world. Everywhere we went, they beeped their horns and waved as we passed. When we went out looking for anything, someone was always helpful in locating a food stand (there are no American type restaurants), a convenience store (some are very small) and places to buy beverages (water must be purchased - alcohol can be expensive).
If you go, rent a car from Gilberts. They also have a motel, liquor store and convenience store with most supplies. Make one of your suitcases specifically for meats, toilet paper, spices, bread, and anything you need to survive but don't want to spend at least $5.00 on. $5.00 seems to be the base price on everything due to import costs.
Best time to visit is July through November. It's off season. Less than 750 people on the island at these times of the year.
Must see places....Hawk's Nest (as American touristy as it gets); The Hermitage (spectacular and worth the climb); Downtown New Bight (the "restaurants" like Duke's); Mary's Crab Shack; any of the churches (Mt. Zion Catholic was spectacular!).
One special thing was most amazing to us. The Old Bight Gospel Chapel and Mission Home is a wonderful orphanage. The 17 kids we meet were extremely polite and well mannered. These kids need forever homes! We had lunch with them twice and went to Sunday church. Junior Morris, Ms. Smith & Ms. Dawkins were amazing hosts who take great care of these kids. We loved them all. But they need your support, so please stop by.
Special thanks to Reynold Bulter. Also Tanny! Have them take you fishing!
Arrived end of July and stayed for 14 days. Had no complaints about anything. The AC worked well. Kitchen is new and functional. Lots of room.. Sat TV is a working dream on big TV screen. Beds are very good. Porch sits over the water and great corral . Perfect to look at in morning having coffee. Wireless internet works well. You will find the locals on Cat to be friendly and helpful. The local food store is about 15 min but will have everything you need. Stop at the store before going to house as you will need basic supplies. Rent your car form Gilberts. It will save you a 60 dollar taxi from airport and to airport plus the extra room of the SUV will be needed. Lots of beaches everywhere. No matter which way the wind blows you can find a calm beach . The best snorkeling from beach is over nest to Greenwood resort. Mary's Crab shack is a 5 min car ride. Call in and your order will be ready for pickup when you get there. Go for the lobster or wing plate. Great fried chicken and only 6 dollars. Conch fritters are only 4 for a dollar. The snorkeling is great next to house but may be a little rough sometimes. Put the kayaks in the SUV and put in at the turnaround on a falling tide. Great float. The resident property manager Reynold Butler is the local manager and checks on you every day. Also he will be there very quickly if you need him. Charter Reynold to go conch and snorkeling. Get ready to eat conch. Make sure you get Reynold to show you how to cut up the clean conch. Makes it very tinder. Have Reynold put the excess conch on a rope in the old boat launch nest to house. This will allow you to have fresh conch on demand.
Had all my grandchildren with me and their parents sometimes. Everyone had a great time. House was well worth the money.
The home was beautiful! The location, though primitive, was breathtaking! Dismiss any thought of civilization as you know it, as well as any mention of Reynold and his family, and head straight for Dave, Carol, and Shayne. Without this trio, our stay would not have been the sublime getaway of which we dreamt! If perfect vistas and first class service is what you desire, trust me, this is your only destination on Cat Island and ONLY Dave and Carol can deliver the experience. They know the locals, can arrange the excursions, whether boating or flights to other islands, musical performances at the house, private gourmet chef dinners, tours of local nightlife, or delivery of fresh seafood, their consistency never waivered. Demand their service from start to finish!!
After a busy year, we wanted a vacation. We were looking for a spot to relax and settle down. So we packed bags and headed to a destination unfamiliar to us; "Point House" at Cat Island. We had found "our" Paradise.
Point House became our "home away from home", and it was an amazing two weeks!
We arrived to find that the dark sky was the back drop for stars that shined so bright, we thought we were in space. The beauty of the entrance welcomed us. This home is AWESOME!! We awaken to the sound of waves crashing against the large rock that secured the house above the ocean. The view from bed was BREATHTAKING . We spent our days enjoying the sights and sounds, and meeting the citizens of Cat Island.**We enjoyed preparing our meals in the spacious kitchen, with a spectacular ocean view.**An occasional Cruise Ship sailed within view as we prepared dinners.**Point House had all the comforts of home. We spent hours enjoying each other, talking, singing, dancing, playing games and appreciating ALL the beauty Cat Island offered.** We were unable to organize a fishing trip; however, Reynaldo arranged to deliver fresh fish and lobster for an evening dinner. The lobster was delicious and the fish made great tacos.**Many days were spent enjoying the house, ocean and quiet time together. We ventured out to see the beauty of the island, as well.**Point House is a fabulous getaway for family, friends or pure romance.**Challenges included a loss of power, due to company maintenance, inoperative pool vacuum, no internet connection, although provided.**Not one of these challenges stopped us from having the time of our lives!!**Thanks to the owners we returned home with a renewed spirit and purpose for 2014.** We were blessed to have experienced this phenomenal vacation spot. The beauty and comfort of Point House allowed for a lifetime of great memories. The unique features of Cat Island should not be compared to that of other islands. Instead, enjoy the beauty and hospitality the island offers.**If you're searching for a MEMORABLE vacation, I highly recommend Point House at Cat Island.**Pack your bags, hop two flights, turn OFF ALL cell phones then RELAX, UNWIND and ENJOY your life and appreciate that Piece of Heaven here on Earth.
We got back from the Point House on Cat Island 5 days ago and are still reeling from what a fantastic getaway it was. This house, while not in perfect condition, was perfect just the same and we quickly warmed to its charms. Staying there is like you are at the ends of the earth. The house had almost everything we needed. We brought our own fishing gear and snorkeling equipment. Waking up in the master bedroom is like being on a big ship. You are surrounded on 3 sides by water, and lay in bed listening to the waves crashing. Phenomenal.
The thing you have to remember about being on an out island is that it's subject to the idosyncracies of the weather. Each time a major storm comes through, things get torn up; sometimes they are repaired, and sometimes not, and sometimes, very slowly, like island-time. It takes time and money to make repairs; it's not like the owners can hop down to the local home depot to buy new windows. This house is no exception. It's seen its share of stormy weather as it's out on an exposed ragged point. The owners have spent countless dollars on restorations & repairs, and though it's fabulous as is, it will always need something new to be done to it.
So you have to get over it. Open your mind to the impossibility of where you are and you will not see the minor imperfections. You will wake up every morning to be amazed by the site.
I believe, if you can be forgiving and open your mind to the vast differences of home ownership in a place like Cat vs. your hometown, you can be rewarded beyond belief. Was our house in perfect, Western-first-world condition? No. Was it amazing and comfortable and spectacular in other ways? Yes. Would I recommend it or would I go there again? Yes, in a heartbeat. I wish I was still there!
We did nothing but play cards, read books, snorkle, fish, doze, and drink rum. The house internet was down, and it turned out to be a blessing. I could have gotten all cranky about not being in touch with my staff daily, but I chose to take the opportunity to disconnect instead. Much better as a result!
The owners were great to deal with, the caretaker was wonderful, the reverend, who delivered produce to our back door, was a love. Room for improvements? Please provide a hairdryer & toilet paper, games and cds, so we don't have to bring them. Rec: Bring strong bug repellent as the noseeums are brutal. But those are First-World problems, yes? No complaints from us.
Thank you for such a fantastic experience!
