“The Makahuena” is located on the southernmost point of Kauai. This unique oceanside resort is situated on the edge of a bluff providing spectacular coastal views. This 2-bd/2.5-ba is a multi-level condo on the second story of the building, walking up stairs is required. Enter into the open living room with a full kitchen, open air lanai, guest half bath and indoor laundry for your convenience.

On the second floor the primary bedroom is furnished with a King sized bed, ceiling fan, and ensuite bathroom. The guest bedroom is furnished with a Queen sized bed, ceiling fan, and ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower. Both bedrooms are equipped with a portable window AC. ***Construction Notice: There is active construction occurring on the neighboring property, and may cause noise or partial obstruction to the existing island and ocean views. Rental rates have already been adjusted to reflect a competitive rate. This notice will be removed upon completion of construction.***

Management company was excellent. Emails and texts were promptly answered. The location was fantastic and the view was beautiful. The not-so-good: the entire unit was very dated and needs some improvements: cracked tiles in the kitchen, scuffed and nicked furniture, rusted door knobs and appliances, bathroom fixtures pitted, baseboards coming off, etc. But everything was very clean, including the linens, towels, bedsheets and pillows. Overall I’d probably recommend it but would provide caveats.

The pictures were so misleading for this unit. The ocean view no longer matches the listing. The kitchen cabinets doors were dirty around the handles and the floor needs to be replaced. The whole unit was a disappointment. It felt tired and not accurately represented in the listing.

Very clean and well equipped for vacationing, beds are comfortable. Would be nice to have towel bars in the bathrooms for washcloths and hand towels. 2 steep flights of stairs to the front door, plus another to bedroom level will make staying difficult for anyone with knee, back, or mobility issues, but the ocean view from the balcony was lovely.

Perfect honeymoon getaway!

We loved staying here for the second half of our honeymoon. We appreciated how everything you needed was there, easy to find, and offered more space. Even more incredible is the proximity to the coast to watch the waves crash in. We would definitely return here if we find ourselves back in Kauai!

Overall a great experience. No elevator and stairs required make this not a great option for the mobility impaired. But, a great location to use as a home base for exploring the island. No A/C in the living area but cross breeze makes it pleasant, just open the front door.

Overall our experience at this property was okay. We arrived to find the air conditioner exhaust broken, which appeared to have been broken for some time and had to have someone come in to fix. Our white towels did not appear clean, and were rewashed upon arrival. The bed frame in the main bedroom did not feel stable and could use reinforcement. There were bugs and uncleaned areas on the floor near the fan in the corner. The curtains were also not clean. The patio was also cover in some kind of black power substance around the edges. The washing machine was plumbed backwards and I ended up shrinking a pair of shorts. When the machine was turned to cold it filled with hot water and when the machine was turned to hot it filled with cold. Also, while I realize, the rain could have lead to this issue, we ended up finding mushrooms and mold growing from the tile behind the main bathroom door - quite telling about the cleanliness of the property. I found the listing misleading by stating there was A/C - you had to read more carefully into the listing to find out they were window units in the 2 bedrooms with no A/C in the main space. Photos of the new construction is also not updated in the listing which blocks some what is a beautiful ocean view. Luckily the kitchen felt clean and was well equipped but otherwise we were quite disappointed with this rental overall and would not recommend.

Sweet spot

A very pleasant spot on the south shore. The condo worked well for our family and sunset viewing with the neighbors was very pleasant. We even saw the green flash one night.

Poipu stay

This was a wonderful VRBO with access to the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail. It is also only less than 5 minutes to drive to Poipu Beach and shipwreck beach. The unit had 4 beach chairs and three pairs of snorkels and fins available for use. The listing does say partial ocean view but the picture shows different, so just realize you have a partial ocean view from a balcony. I would definitely stay here again.
