Our trip to Prince of Wales was to see caves on the island. Beaver Falls Karst Trail is a wonderful trail for the non-cavers and the Capitan Cave is also an excellent adventure. Red Dawg provided us with a great location to see the caves and to be close to supplies. My husband was also successful at fishing between cave trips because of all the information in Red Dawg Retreat.
We spent a week at Red Dawg Retreat and could not have asked for anything more. The house is perfect for 2 -6 and is completely furnished and comes with a well equipped kitchen. The washer. dryer was great for keeping rainforest damp clothes dry. We grilled every night and enjoyed quite evenings in our secluded retreat. Wayne and Sharon check in to make sure all is well and Sarah the property manager is there for any problem, like the one we had when a bear got into the trash bin. And when you are ready for a little information about the outside world, the DISH is nice to have.
You can package your stay with the Red Dawg suv and a skiff. We highly recommend this centrally located house for fishermen and adventure seekers alike.
This is our second time at Red Dawg and as hard as it is to believe they only continue to improve the experience from our already amazing stay a few years ago. The package with the house and vehicle and now a skiff rental made sure our group of 6 had very little down time - freshwater and saltwater fishing, sightseeing, exlporing etc. ...as usual our week went by way too quickly. The house was in impeccable shape, had all the amenities to make life comfortable (boot dryers, big coolers, rod holders, chest freezer...the list goes on) and on top of that the owners made sure to answer all our questions and checked in to make sure everything was good while we were at the house. I can't imagine staying anywhere else and have no reservations about recommending this house for anyone visiting SE Alaska.
We had a great time during our week's stay at the Red Dawg Retreat in Coffman Cove, Alaska! The accommodations were perfect for two Dad's and four teenage boys, for a week of Father/son fishing. We fished the saltwater (where the Coho can be caught right in the cove,) and explored several rivers. We caught salmon and halibut; saw lots of whales, eagles and bears. Wayne and Sharon have set up the cabin so that it has all the amenities for a very comfortable stay. It's perfect for a family or any group. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. The washer/dryer were very useful and the chest freezer will hold your entire catch. We utilized the suburban and skiff to explore and meet all of our fishing needs. Wayne was very helpful in providing useful information and fishing tips. Coffman Cove is a quiet little town with friendly people. It's a great place to experience the wild and beauty of Alaska. I would recommend the Red Dawg Retreat to anyone and plan to return!
My wife and I stayed here with our in laws the first week of August in 2014 and had an absolutely amazing time!!! The house is clean, has all the amenities you could need and is perfectly located to explore the island. All of the rooms had comfortable beds, the living is spacious and with plenty of room for people to relax, and the kitchen has just about anything you could potentially need. The washer and dryer and great so you don't have to pack as many clothes. Having the chest freezer is especially helpful to keep your frozen before you trip home. We rented the suburban but had a few issues with it on the first trip out. But one call to Wayne the owner and we had a new suburban and were back on the road in under an hour! That is a top notch owner who will take care of the guest!
During our stay we fished all over the island and like everyone has said, it's truly amazing! We caught more fish than we could potentially bring home. There is a map on the wall highlighting a few places to fish but exploring for new spots is half the fun. Overall, we absolutely loved this place and would definitely recommend it! I know we'll be back for sure!
Stayed at the RED DOG RETREAT in Prince of Wales, Al from 7/5 until 7/19, 2014. In attendance were 5 fishermen from upstate NY. The cottage was spacious and provided excellent accommodations for the five of us. The kitchen had a big refrigerator, stove, dish washer and plenty of quality dishes and utensils. A large screen TV with satellited connection to keep track of world affairs. A large deck was used to relax as well as a place to steam Dungeness crabs. A fish cleaning station at the Coffman Cove Marina was handy for cleaning fish. Residents were very friendly and provided good advice on where to fish or sight see.
A freezer was handy to hold the fish we caught. The caretaker who lived across the street responded to our every request. Two crab pots were provided and resulted in many Dungeness Crabs every time we checked them. The rented skiff gave us the ability to go out from the Cove and catch Halibut, Cod and Salmon. The fishing was outstanding in both the ocean and the streams. We caught Halibut, Salmon, Silver and King Salmon, Dolly Varden and Cutthroat Trout. The owner of the RED DOG RETREAT was extremely helpful and responded to our every request.
Red Dawg Retreat was a great vacation home. We travel often, and the accommodations were beyond what we expected. Our group of three couples had plenty of space to enjoy our time there. The kitchen was well equipped, beds comfortable and the entire house clean. The owner and property manager were extremely helpful and answered all our questions. Renting the Suburban was necessary for us to be able to get to the streams and rivers to do our salmon fishing. The fishing map posted on the wall was very helpful. Coffman Cove is a small town, but everyone we met was friendly and informative. We would definitely recommend this rental to anyone that is interested in this type of Alaska experience.
