BewareWe booked this home for our annual siblings’ trip (our second year using VRBO), and the weekend was completely derailed within hours due to a dangerous gas/CO issue.After just 5–6 hours on site, my girlfriend and I, along with my sister and her husband, cooked a frozen pizza and were immediately hit with a strong gas/fume smell from the stove. The overhead vent fan was broken. Minutes later, the carbon monoxide alarm in the main hallway went off — all four of us witnessed it. We opened doors, evacuated outside, and waited, but the alarm made it clear: this house was unsafe.We contacted the host via VRBO messaging around 11 p.m. — no response. We called VRBO directly but sat on hold for 20 minutes with no help. At that point, we had no choice: we reloaded all of our belongings and groceries into our cars and tried to find a hotel. In this rural area, nothing was available. After already driving 4–5 hours to get there, both couples were forced to leave in the middle of the night and drive another 4–5 hours home. Our weekend was ruined. Host did not respond until next afternoon (AFTER I logged formal VRBO complaint).Adding insult to injury, the host refused to refund a cent. VRBO’s “investigation” demanded pictures of carbon monoxide (impossible!) and parroted the host’s claim that the detector never went off and that it was just a smoke alarm. This is flat-out false.Bottom line: this property was unsafe, the host was unresponsive, and VRBO did not help.
