Johnson Lake Compound - (2 Individual Homes)

This retreat consists of two individual lakefront homes and is perfect for a large group or family.

Located on beautiful Johnson Lake in Arbor Vitae and within a few short minutes of downtown Minocqua. This is small quaint lake that is great for fishing, swimming, and all types of boating and offers a little bit of solitude during the summer months of Minocqua, while being right around corner from town. As the winter sets in, you'll be able enjoy the snowmobile trails right across the lake.

ABOUT THE HOME(S)

Home #1 - 3700 sq. ft. 3 bd, 3.5 bth (Sleeps 10)
Home #2 - 1550 sq. ft. 3 bd. 1.5 bth (Sleeps 8)

Main Residence:

The residences were originally part of a historical hotel that was converted over the years into two detached residential homes. The main home boasts three large private bedrooms all with 3.5 bathrooms (3 en-suite) and approximately 3700 square foot of living space. It has a lodge like great room with an expansive wood fireplace and cathedral ceilings, a spacious kitchen and dining room, and a large master bedroom on the main floor. You'll enjoy the views of the lake and entertainment yard below.

The lower level offers two private bedrooms and a relaxing bar to enjoy the evening and watch your favorite games.

You'll end up gravitating to the outdoors at some point during your stay and appreciate the expansive fire pit with the surrounding Adirondack chairs , new permanent dock, swim raft, and kayaks/paddleboards provided.

Secondary Residence:

3 bedrooms + 1.5 bathrooms (Approx. 1550 sq. ft.) - Sleeps 8 (Just renovated)

The detached home offers captivating water views as you enter the residence with the oversized living room windows. The ample natural light and open space concept create a very warm and comfortable setting.
The master bedroom is lake facing and is an oversized room with a comfortable King bed and flat screen TV.

The secondary bedroom has a queen size bed and shares a half bath with the third bedroom.

The third bedroom has two full beds and set up perfect for two kids or adults.

Clean good quality custom lakefront home with wonderful views and layout to accommodate a family of 11. The owners were responsive to our questions and the location was convenient to shopping and restaurants. I would highly recommend for large family retreats.

We stayed here for our annual “Up North” reunion with kids and grand-kids. Easy check-in, great communication and beautiful backyard property. Kids enjoyed the kayaks and the fishing off the pier. Close to town and quiet neighborhood.

Practically Perfect

Our family of 15 ranging in age from 76 - 5 had the absolute best time at the Johnson Lake Compound this year! We spend a week together every year and this was our 10th year anniversary of this reunion and we couldn’t have had a better setting!Every detail was thought through and the kids and adults alike enjoyed the home so much! We spent hours everyday down by the lake just splashing around on the lily pad, kayaking and paddle boarding as well as fishing! The kids caught many fish and we have the pictures to prove it!Having two homes allowed our group to spread out when needed and come together for games and meals! There was ample space for all of us to do whatever we wanted even if that was nothing at all!We can’t wait to return for another year!

Perfect for family fun

Lake was clean & calm- perfect for kayaking & paddle boarding!! The 2 homes were nice, lots of room for family fun & for not stepping on each other & the dogs. Loved the large kitchen, dining room & living room in big house. Patio & deck out back were really nice. We had such a fun family bonding stay.

My five siblings and I (6 couples) had a wonderful time staying at the Johnson Lake Compound. First off, let me say that I have never been at a VRBO that was so well stocked and ready for our vacation. We had extra paper towels, toilet paper, dishwasher pods, scrubbing pads, salt & pepper, firewood and so on. There were towels a plenty. We made use of the three kayaks and the pedal boat (life jackets provided) and enjoyed going out on the beautiful lake. Groups could sit on the upper or lower patio area and converse or just enjoy the quiet of the northwoods, watching an occasional small plane fly over or a pontoon boat slowly move past. We only cooked in the kitchen in the big house, but found ample space for multiple people in the kitchen and found all the cookware and utensils we needed to prepare and enjoy our meals. There was excellent communication with the owner and I can easily give our entire experience a 5-Ster Rating.I hope that we are able to come back and enjoy it all again.

Really nice beautiful home, close to the water on a small lake, very close to road. Clean. Kitchen was very well appointed. Bedrooms spacious and comfortable. Nice to have the second house. The host could have been more communicative, but he was very responsive. Our family had a wonderful time.

Labor Day/Bachelorette Celebration

Beautiful houses and just what we needed for our long Labor Day weekend celebration! We had a few coming from out of town, into Rhinelander Airport (only 33 minutes from the house and an easy drive). The space in the big house was perfect for our group, open kitchen and dining room and a large living area. The other house was nice to have for extra space for our larger group. The fire pit was a hit for us, no bugs which was a huge plus for us (also considering how close it is to the water)! The Lilly pad, kayaks and paddle boards were used quite a bit during our visit. Close to downtown Minocqua for shopping and resturants.

Great family vacay at Johnson Lake

Totally awesome! It was perfect space for our large group to interact but also to spread out comfortably. Our whole group gathered for breakfast in the big kitchen/dining area. The backyard was so big with several gathering areas. Fire pit was great but the dock was our favorite. Lots of fish were caught and my 9 year old granddaughter caught so many we lost count. Several kayaks, canoes and life jackets were provided and were a favorite, also. Overall, great vacation and my whole family agreed. I hated to leave and I sure do miss having my morning coffee on the dock!

Summer camp on steroids!

9 nights with friends and family (several infants/small children) and we had such a great time. Overall a fantastic property with an exceptional outdoor/beach space. We rented a pontoon and jet ski and the lake was surprisingly still and empty. It’s small but mighty! Firepit area was perfect with ample firewood provided to us as part of the rental. Fishing on the lake was great too. Nice bass and musky off the dock. The two houses sometimes offered more separation than was desirable for a group vacation, but it was great to have all of that room along with two kitchens and washer dryer sets. There were a handful of small hiccups during the first couple days on the property, but the owner Josh was very responsive on the phone and offered to remedy the issues promptly. We’ll definitely consider renting again next summer!

Family Trip to Johnson Compound

We stayed at Johnson Compound including the 2 homes 6/29-7/6. The home and property were fabulous. We enjoyed the paddle boat, paddle boards, kayaks, fires at night, local happenings and most of all the serenity of the lake, whether fishing, kayaking or just simply enjoying the beauty from the 2-tier dock. Highly recommend sitting out on the docks early in the morning with a cup of coffee or at sunset around the fire. Our weather was wonderful which added to our great visit. The 2 homes were perfect for our group to provide plenty of space. Kitchen and living room areas are spacious as well. I walked a number of mornings and plenty of options for walking. Locale is great and close to so much. Walmart is literally a 3-minute drive which we utilized for last minutes on a daily basis. Beds are comfy, plenty of bathrooms/showers, and as mentioned kitchen very spacious, washer/dryer in both houses. Host Josh was awesome and very responsive to any questions. We highly recommend this vacation location and hope to return in the future!

Great Space for Extended Family

The homes were close enough to each other that we could easily maneuver between them. The little house had no access to the ground/lake level from inside the house. You had to go around or down the slanted but sturdy and steep stairs exteriorly. No beach per se but you could enter and exit from the dock stairs. Lots of outdoor seating. The big house has loads of rooms and space for large families. Fishing was fun off the dock for panfish. The lake was smaller than expected but applicable for boating and skiing and tubing. Lots of kayaks and paddle boards to use. Plenty of fans and cool breezes off the lake. The homes are very close to an extremely BUSY road so watch your kiddos or pets. I wish the website showed explicit details about inclusive items like bedding, towels, and beach towels. We were in the small house and it was great for rainy day entertainment space. I would say it’s definitely a great place to stay so close to Minoqua without being in the traffic and high people areas. Close to a public boat docking area. Heavy vehicle noise from Hwy 47 across the lake. Both homes showed wear and could use some facelifts. We did experience water dripping from skylight in the big house but the owner was notified and was going to fix it asap. Easy communication with Josh and was very personable. I do wish we had gotten the check in email the night before so that we could’ve revamped our supplies a little bit more. Thumbs up!
