We had a great time on Seagull Lake! The cabin is cute and cozy and very comfortable for our family. The area is beautiful! We mostly canoed around the lake and had luck catching bass, pike, and even found a secret walleye spot not far from the cabin. We also canoed down to the west part of the lake and portaged to Paulson Lake-a VERY rough (but beautiful) portage and worth the work to get there! Everything was better than described and we couldn't have chosen a better place for our vacation. Thank you!
This is such a great getaway! Our family loved canoeing and kayaking around Seagull Lake - we were surprised at how many islands it included. We explored new areas each day. Highlights were canoeing to island for picnic, kayaking to public beach nearby to play in the sand. Hiking and picking wild raspberries and blueberries at nearby ChikWauk Nature Center. We were impressed with Seagull Outfitters for add'l kayak rental just across the lake and kids loved canoeing there to get a treat. Home was very comfortable, had everything we needed and more. The screened porch and outdoor porch were much roomier than we expected. Amazing stargazing opportunities. Also enjoyed meal at Gunflint Lodge and others nearby. We were all thrilled to see Mama moose and baby, bald eagles, loons and more. Cabin is quite a distance from town of Grand Marais, but was just the retreat we were looking for. Judy could not have been more helpful. We hope to take advantage of this great cabin again. Amazing family memories.
We had a great time at this rental. The cabin is wonderful and well-appointed. It was refreshing to disconnect from TV, e-mail etcetera. My husband was still able to connect with business by using phone cards (which was a concern he had). We appreciated the canoes and used them a lot. There is a nice beach nearby and you can also swim off the pier. We used fishing guide Cory Christianson and rented a boat from Ugly Baby Boats and recommend both ! The hiking is fantastic and we enjoyed seeing loons, eagles, a fox and other wildlife. This rental is particularly nice for families looking to spend time together and get away from it all.
This is the second year we have returned to this property and plan on doing so for as long as it is available! It is truly a gem. There is no cell service or wifi which means that our three kids in their late teens actually talk to us and each other - this benefit cannot be overstated! The canoes provided allow you to explore the incredible Seagull Lake as well as Seagull Creek and adjoining BWCA. The main cabin is comfortable and equipped with everything you need for a stay. Just bring your food and clothes (+ fishing gear) and enjoy a vacation the way vacations were meant to be! Last year we saw bears! bears! bears! Big bears and baby bears, mama bears and papa bears but this year we only saw one brief glimpse and I am told it had to do with the time of year and the fact that blueberry season is just getting started. Bears really love blueberries, and if you like wild delicious blueberries there are more than enough for you too! This year we saw moose! Crazy amazing huge beautiful moose! We saw a mama moose with her baby only a few months old several times and were awestruck with each encounter. Bugs only seem to be intolerable at dawn and dusk. They really just disappear during daylight and twilight hours. We never used mosquito repellent the entire trip. Canoeing over to Seagull Outfitters for t shirts, baseball caps, fishing bait and candy is really fun for everybody in the family. Just a 10 minute drive away is Gunflint Lodge where you can rent a motorboat for the afternoon and fish, swim, or just have fun exploring the sparkling lake. Evenings were hallmarked by the classic collection of VHS tapes on hand! E.T. and Forrest Gump, Trains Planes and Automobiles... movies the whole family enjoyed! Campfires at the fire pit feel like you are stepping into a movie set. You just have to experience it to understand it. The stars above are vibrant and reflect off of the mirrored surface of the lake while the shoreline is a playground for the fireflies that hover and float like animated Christmas lights in July! After campfire time, migrating to the chairs on the dock provides the most expansive view of the sky. Amazing. For years we have treasured this area as BWCA campers, but discovering this amazing property has elevated and amplified our appreciation and I would encourage anyone to experience it at least once. I'm confident you will want to come back again and again! #favorite memories ever
I think the title almost sums it up- I'm worried that if I add another great review this spot might not be available next year! Our family has stayed at many a VBRO, and this one is at the top of the list. Judith was extremely helpful during the process, and the property is great. Located in a great spot along the Gunflint Trail, there is plenty of space between you and town. Seagull lake is a community unto itself and it was nice to get a taste of that during your stay. Great hiking trails, canoeing, and just the right environment to unplug from most of the modern world and take a clean deep breath. A great place for a guys week or outdoor enthusiasts.
My wife said it best; We’ve stayed in many VRBO (VRBO.com) places and this is the first one that made us feel like we were being welcomed into someones home.
Listing was very accurate, photo's don't do it justice, we would not recommend to anyone because we want to make sure it's available next year on the dates we are available! :--)
I travel a lot for work and am very picky when it comes to hotels. I don’t travel very much for family vacations so I’m even pickier (if that’s a word??). Here’s what I was looking for and found in this lake home on Sea Gull Lake:
Quiet: Yes Bedrooms were very quiet. Gunflint Trail is too far away to hear it. I was worried about the public landing up the lake but it wasn’t a problem. No noise and the people exiting and entering the lake are far enough outside this bay you can’t hear a thing/ and big rock outcropping blocking view and noise.
Comfortable/clean/enough room: yep, very good here. Beds were comfortable, bathroom and kitchen were great. More than enough room in the dinning room, living room, on the deck and in the screen porch to have a bit of ‘family separation’ if you wanted. The woodwork makes it look like a great lake home, not a sterile hotel room.
Easy to get around: nice large parking / driveway area and it was real easy to carry our kayaks down to the dock area. Just up the road were a few outfitters with stores for basic needs (if you didn’t bring them with). Also, they know about the hot fishing areas on the lake.
Misc: They have the home nicely decorated, lots of extra’s, kitchen was fully stocked (minus the food), and the #1 thing about this: Location/Location/Location; yes the view alone is worth the money!
BTW, we had a very minor problem so we called Judy. She didn’t have an answer so Paul called me right back. We got it solved in a few seconds. Half the call with Judy was her making sure everything else was ok… it was. 90% of the call with Paul was spent talking about great things to do in the area (hiking, fishing area’s, dinning, etc). Very friendly and responsive. THANKS Judy and Paul. Can’t wait to come back.
