Brought to you by the Heart of Cape Cod, Lieutenant Lodge is a rare and remarkable escape on Wellfleet’s Lieutenant Island—where tidal rhythms guide your day, bird calls echo through the salt marsh, and sunsets set the bay ablaze in color.
Originally built in 1927 as a hunting lodge, this historic home now welcomes guests with rustic charm, coastal elegance, and front-row seats to one of the Cape’s most protected and peaceful landscapes. Cross the one-lane wooden bridge and enter a slower world, where winding causeways, sweeping marshes, and hidden beaches feel like a page from another time.
Perched on a bluff above the bay, the lodge offers panoramic views and direct access to Hidden Beach below. Each day unfolds with quiet wonder—coffee on the porch as herons glide across the tidal flats, a slow paddle through golden reeds, or simply sinking into a chair as the sky turns rose and amber. Inside, the home retains its original character with wood beams, vintage touches, and a lived-in warmth that invites you to unplug, unwind, and reconnect.
Whether you're basking in summer sun or wrapped in fall color, Lieutenant Lodge is a place to experience the Cape as it once was—and still is, if you know where to look.

Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water levels that happen every day. They’re caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on Earth’s oceans. The moon’s pull is stronger because it’s closer, and it causes water to bulge out on the side of Earth facing the moon and also on the opposite side.
As Earth rotates, different areas move into these bulges, which is why we get two high tides and two low tides each day. It’s like the ocean is following the moon’s lead in a giant, watery dance.
Please check a tide chart for Wellfleet Harbor (in your guidebook) so that you can plan accordingly.
