Welcome to our family’s mountain home, the Nuthatch, named after the sweet, compact black and white-breasted songbird. Our home has been recently updated, furnished, and stocked with the highest attention to detail and quality (as we would have it for ourselves) and we are excited to welcome visitors beginning February 2022. We are located 10 minutes from downtown Durango and 25 minutes from Purgatory, on one of the most beautiful roads in the world, County Road 250, with views in all directions. It’s truly the perfect location year-round to enjoy all that the San Juan Mountains has to offer.
Please note, late check-out or early check-in is available upon request - no problem! We set the default check-out time a bit early to help out our house cleaning service.
Please contact us directly for discounted monthly rates.
Upon entering our home, you are greeted by the wide-open great room with open living, kitchen, and dining, wood floors, wood ceilings, and soaring ceilings with clarestory windows and red cliff views out the back. Step down to the adjoining sunken sunroom, where you will find the wood-burning stove, comfy lounge chairs, and a turntable with our own curated record collection for your listening enjoyment. If the record collection doesn't have quite the right musical offering, ask Alexa to play anything you like.
The well-appointed kitchen has ample glassware, place settings for 10, silverware, chef's knives, stainless steel cookware, an assortment of serving platters, 8-cup coffee maker with a thermal carafe (to keep your coffee warm on a cold morning), food processor, crockpot, tea kettle, toaster, storage dishes, countless utensils, oven mitts, dish towels, and even plastic cups for kiddos and/or the hot tub. The indoor dining table seats 6 along with 4 counter stools. Enjoy the large pantry options and additional food/beverage storage options in the 2nd refrigerator in the garage.
The downstairs has one small guest bedroom with a queen size bed, wood floors, and high ceilings at the front of the house whose window overlooks the front drive and out onto the Animas Valley.
Also, downstairs is the private "middle bedroom" with a queen size bed, carpeted floors, high ceilings, and a writing desk.
The bunkroom downstaris at the rear of the house has a sturdy steel twin-over-full bunk along with a sofa and smart TV. Note, the sofa is not a sleeper sofa but could be a suitable bed for small kiddo. Sheets and blankets are stored in the closet nearby if the need arises.
The recently renovated downstairs bathroom is gorgeous but is quite small for shared use. For this reason, we have installed towel hooks and vanity mirrors in each of the bedrooms.
Upstairs, a cozy and quiet primary suite with mountain views and a large adjoining bath with recently renovated shower. Please note, glass shower enclosure replacing shower curtain coming soon.
Our home is kept warm in the winter with heated baseboards (4 thermostats throughout the house) and a wood-burning stove. In the summer, we are fortunate to have an evaporative cooler to keep things cool.
Outdoors, the newly installed, 8-person hot tub awaits along with outdoor living/dining space, and a natural gas grill. Enjoy Animas Valley and red cliff views from the hot tub. (Note, a privacy fence around the hot tub and outdoor towel hooks coming soon)
"Right outside this lazy summer home
You ain't got time to call your soul a critic no
Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home
Wondering where the nuthatch winters
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away"
- Eyes of the World by the Grateful Dead
Welcome to the Nuthatch. Enjoy.
