Stay in the historic 1887 Beard and Lady Inn surrounded by the Ozarks

Staying at the Beard and Lady Inn is like stepping back in time. Surrounded by the Ozarks, this 130+ year old building was restored in 2020 keeping its historic charm. There are 11 guest rooms themed around a human fear or experience, a dining hall, kitchen, mercantile store, and convention hall with stage. It sits in the peaceful town of Chester, AR across from the blue water of Clear Creek, minutes from Lake Fort Smith, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, a passenger train ride and UTV trails.

This is a black and white room with wedding pictures of my distant family. The room has a king size bed and is the only room with a large private bathroom. The bathroom has a large glassed in shower and a huge clawfoot soaking tub. The bedroom also has the option to have room number 10 connect is desired. This room evokes thoughts on commitment, marriage and how some view the world black and white.

The inn has 11 cozy private rooms upstairs which are furnished in antique décor. The rooms include one suite with its own private bathroom and a large second suite with a kitchenette. All rooms have shared access to 8 toilets (6 upstairs and 2 down) and 6 showers. Downstairs is a dining hall, kitchen, mercantile store, convention hall with stage, outdoor patio, stream with two bridges, and outdoor patios. The dining hall is where guests and the public will have shared access to eat. The mercantile styled apothecary shop is where you’ll find Beard and Lady goods, our own line of apothecary-inspired personal care and grooming products, as well as handmade products made by local artisans. The convention hall can be rented for events and live music. The inn is famous among locals, travelers, and Hollywood directors for its supernatural past, endurance through disaster, and history of American railroad grit.
* Beware! You might be challenged with the task of writing a post card or letter and sending it.

Is it haunted?

"Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. And lo, no one was there." This quote was carved into a mantle of another historic Inn. I first read it the night that my husband proposed to me. I have learned and lived by this. When fear creeps up and knocks I muster all my courage, sometimes I really am still really scared however I have found that when I simply open the door by faith darkness and fear are dispelled. This has taught me so many lessons but one big one is that we are haunted by many things all kinds of things. We are terrified of what someone may say about us on the internet, the opinions of our neighbors, taking in the stranger, we worry about our children or evening having children, and then we worry about growing old and our children growing older- the list goes on. These fears are not a physical monster on the other side of the wall or walking down the hall, but they are ideas that we let hide in our minds that we allow to keep us keep us scared.

Here at the Beard and Lady we have decorated our rooms inspired by fears we have faced or are overcoming. We ask each guest to join us bravely. One of the ways I have faced my own fear is simply by saying it out loud, writing it down or even confessing to a friend. While you stay, we ask that depending on your room you would dive into the full experience with us. Each room will have a writing prompt and stamps. Please be prepared for our ask of sending a letter or post card. Sounds scary right? Are you ready to be totally freaked out?....... Leave your phone at the door and face your inner fears.

Trip back in time!
We had a wonderful stay in room 11. The inn was a perfect feeling of nostalgia and very well done, but still all modern conveniences including a well equipped coffee bar with snacks. The room was super cozy. Enjoyed the dinner show as well-so fun! Nicest people-go visit this gem!

From Arkansas to Egypt: a Love Story with History

The Mountain Girl: Lacey Hendrix spent her girlhood days in the Boston Mountain region of the Ozarks. She lived in Schaberg, hunted deer with her dad Joey Cowin, stayed at the Chester House Inn, and attended Mountainburg schools and the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. As a child, she admired her mother's love for natural remedies, healthy ingredients, and travel to far off places.

Bewitched by a Boy: When she met Louisiana dreamer Lance Hendrix, they fell in love almost instantly. He proposed to her at Clear Creek, married her in Tyler, Texas and whisked her off to Egypt for their first year of marriage.

A born explorer, Lacey spent her year in Egypt taking in the diverse oils, intoxicated by the tastes of rose and scent of cardamom in the air. They traveled through Western Asia before relocating to England where they had their first child. At last, they returned to the States, where Lacey spent four years working with refugees to connect them with meaningful employment.

Apothecary Dreams: Lacey yearned to create her own apothecary line that could combine the natural ingredients of her youth with the scents and flavors she found abroad. With three small but rambunctious kids, Lacey started Beard and Lady in 2015. Encouraged by friends and YouTube personalities Rhett and Link, Beard and Lady started their collection with an ornately bottled beard oil and cardamom rose lip balm.

Both unabashed romantics, the Hendrix’s vision for Beard and Lady was unique: crafting personal care and grooming products for men and women with unique flavors and scents that enhance the chemistry of relationships.

The Next Adventure: As the woman-owned company grew, Lance and Lacey looked to the horizon for their next adventure. The pair share a passion for re-birthing both ancient elixirs and historic architecture. (In their spare time, they’ve renovated a farmhouse, church, and now a hotel bed and breakfast all from the 1880s.)

Returning to her Roots: Lacey returned to Arkansas to breathe life into the historic Chester House Inn, adding an event space, a stage, and a mercantile shop. Here, she shares their apothecary goods with guests and shoppers, as well as nature-inspired workshops and immersive guest experiences in the Inn’s 11 themed rooms. She’s proud to share her mountain town roots and worldly encounters by way of an uncommon experience in the Ozarks.

The Inn is an example of nineteenth century commercial architecture in Arkansas. [Double-hung sash windows, original merchandise shelving, and wood burning stove etc.]
