It's a treasure and the island is from another time. If you like bars and noise and loud activities, go elsewhere. If you like to reconnect with your wife and live in Mayberry for a week, just book it. Robert/Sharon are great. Local folks help with everything, they are respectful and friendly and this edge of the world place is so cool I can't really describe it. Snorkeling is great, water is clear, the beach will blow you away. House is perfect, has everything you need. Outside showers are sweet. Fishing is awesome, Jacks right out back, and other fish too. Your skin will burn, use some common sense and ease into the tanning, else you'll peel a whole layer like we did. The sun is intense, if you like warm+, you'll love it here.
The house was very comfortable and had everything that one would need. (Loved the comfy bed). The beach there was gorgeous! Such a lovely beach, the blue water, the white sand - beautiful. Water calm enough to swim and enjoy. It was always breezy so I had no problem with bugs at all. The roof top deck was nice and a great view from up there. Plenty of lounge chairs up there and on the area below the deck as well. I preferred to be out on the beach everyday in the comfy lounge chairs. The whole time I was there, I saw just one person on the beach. Had the whole beach to myself otherwise. You can walk a long way in either direction on the beach as well. The house is in a great location on the island. Very close to the airport, little grocery store and liquor store. Restaurants close as well. I enjoyed exploring the whole island. It is a very pretty island and every beach is the same beautiful blue water and white sand beach. The lagoons on the opposite side of the island are lovely. The 'cliffs' up north are beautiful with the rough surf. The beaches on the east side of the island are extremely private. The lighthouse was great to visit with expansive views. The caretaker was very nice and checked in on me to make sure all was good and it was. I would recommend this house and beach to anyone visiting San Salvador.
We are a couple in our late sixties who spent three weeks in March at this charming and comfortable house, and had a truly wonderful vacation. The weather was perfect, with temperatures in the 80s and only two rainy days. The friendly caretaker met us at the airport and was extremely attentive to our every request, especially when it came to acquiring fresh seafood from her extensive network of family and friends on the small island. We loved the deserted beach just outside our back door, and watched glorious sunsets from the house's upper deck. We snorkeled almost every morning from the various beaches, returning to the wonderful outdoor shower on the house's lower deck. We had two snorkel trips further out in deep water, one from a local resort's dive boat (we purchased a day-pass) and one, arranged by our caretaker, with a professional spear fisherman who taught us how to find and open conch and provided us with huge lobsters. Because we love to cook, we purchased fresh veggies, dairy products and staples from the local grocery stores. Most of what we needed in the way of spices and cooking utensils were provided by the house owners, and we brought some dehydrated foods with us (mushrooms, tomatoes, etc). We purchased "cracked conch" from a take-out shack across from the airport, but soon learned how to make our own at the house. This is a very quiet island which suited us well. We spent our evenings reading, playing cards or watching DVDs we had brought with us. We attended a big public "Fish Fry," only to discover that that title doesn't necessarily mean there will be fish -- think chicken -- but the entry fee went to a good cause. We attended a Sunday service at one of the many churches, and I was invited back one evening to take part in a Ladies' Fellowship event that was great fun. The pastor surprised us one night by bringing us a hot and exquisitely cooked dinner which we three shared on the deck. We rented the homeowners' car, and consider it a necessity. Two bicycles were provided, but we New Englanders found it too hot for getting around that way. Our only real complaint was that the phone and internet kept going out. But this wasn't a tragedy for us because we are retired and were on vacation!
We hope to return to this house in the future as we returned to Maine happy and refreshed. Highly recommend you try it!
House was great, perfect place for vacation, property was clean and well maintained. the Caretaker on the island was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the beach out back our first day then tried a different one each day, Grotto, Long, Grahams, and returning to our own in the evenings. House is on the west side of the island where the water is calm and makes snorkeling easy for coral a ways off shore. We visited the field research center and saw their Iguana exhibit and patronized their snack shop for chocolate and soda. Dixon hill lighthouse and the cave, Explored snow bay and watched the waves crach on the rocks. The people were friendly everyone waves to you or toots the horn All in all it was a great vacation.
We had a great time and was very surprised when Wayne called to see how things were going. I travel to the island four or five times per year and will defiantly be staying again. Do you offer a frequent stayers club card?
I took my two teenagers down for a quick 5 day vacation and had a fantastic time. The owners, Wayne and Sharon went above and beyond to ensure we got in well, had all that we needed, and even conspired with my boyfriend to make sure I received a personalized surprise birthday cake (and even sang "Happy Birthday" over the phone.) The house is comfortable with great A/C (if you want) and most of the comforts of home, including a great washer and dryer so you can pack super light knowing that you can wash throughout the week. We took down food (too much) and hardly purchased any there. We took down a cooler (with gel packs - can't take ice), with fruits and veggies, and meats. You can find hotdogs and "steaks", but I brought them and was happy I knew where they came from and how old they were (or weren't). We rented their SUV to go exploring. It's functional, but truly and island vehicle. The house is a bit more rustic than it appears in pictures, but we found it endearing. The outdoor shower is phenomenal and was a huge hit. For the most part, we opted to use it for both coming off the beach and regular showers. I would suggest taking mosquito burning coils or Citronella candles for the back porch and if you're going for an evening walk, best to take personal OFF fans that work like a charm. The only reason I am giving the experience 4 stars is the WiFi. It's really crappy and probably not particular to the house, but I cannot travel without it (for work) and it caused some major issues with clients. Also, because of the intermittent signal, the Netflix never worked. There are some DVDs, but I suggest you bring your own if you want to have movie night(s). San Salvador is very sleep and spread out, so there is no "boardwalk" or area to walk around. This is a true getaway and a nice way to ensure your family looks each other in the eye and reconnects. After two days of not being able to be stuck to cell phones and internet (shocking), we really spent more quality time together than the "real" world allows. You must, must, must bring your snorkel gear. Visibility is stunning as are the reefs. If you want to go on a tour of the island or out on a boat, I highly suggest call Jay Johnson at 1-242-225-9926. www.lagoon-tours-bahamas.com. Also, Kim who looks after the house is very knowledgeable and a sweetheart. We are already looking forward to going back. Next time, we will be taking SPIRIT's direct flight from Ft. Lauderdale. Bahamasair was a nightmare!
