A unique century cabin with amazing views and access to the lake. It is, as billed, very rustic - and we loved that and enjoyed every minute there.
Still, this is NOT the cabin for everyone (see further below).
The two porches virtually hanging over the lake were well-used and outfitted with comfortable (if not new) couches and chairs. Newer gas grill.
The three, separate sleeping spaces were perfect for a 50s couple and two teen boys. The furnishings were charming and durable, and the kitchen has every possible dish, pot and utensil.
We created a hot spot with a cell phone and had spotty internet access. Bring your own iPod and movies for the DVD player and stereo. The cabin has a complete game chest.
The lakefront area is great for fishing (though we caught nothing!) and campfires, and the kayaks and canoe got a workout.
The manager, Maureen, was a gem in every way, and we were glad to hear our local friends knew and liked the owners. The owners' daughter paid a visit while we were there, and she was friendly and interesting.
Wineries line Route 14 to the north and south, and Watkins Glen is 10 minutes away.
But any potential renter needs to make sure this is the safest and right spot for their group.
I would NEVER bring child younger than 10 to this spot. The 60+-foot drop off to the lake is just off the front porch, and a ravine to the south is equally precipitous.
70+ stairs to the lake on a very durable staircase winded us and our older dogs, but were great exercise. Same steep climb if you just take a walk up the hill toward 14, and one car w/poor tires got stuck while we were there.
The tiny kitchen is in a hallway and created bottlenecks. And the full bath is basically in the open area containing the steep, narrow stairs to the 2nd floor. SURPRISE if you step out of the shower or toilet without checking.
Upstairs is another safety concern - an 18-inch chair rail around the steep staircase. One too many beers and, well...
Still, the cabin is what it is, and we found it perfect.
Doubt the owners could do anything more to ameliorate the downsides.
We'll be back!
We just came back from a wonderful week at this cottage. There were a few negatives: the kitchen is tiny. There was hardly any counter space or room in the cupboard for our food so meal preparation was a challenge. The curtained shower is on the first floor right next to the stairwell so whenever anyone took a shower we yelled the all clear so someone wouldn't get an eyeful.
My sister's family was up at the B&B and we thought we would be right next door to each other instead of a hike up the road and over the railroad tracks. However, the pros far outweighed the cons. The upper and lower deck were large and the view was amazing. We put the canoe, kayaks and float to good use and the bin of water shoes was much appreciated. The waterfront area was spacious and we used the firepit frequently. We barely heard or saw any neighbors. The temps were in the 90s all week but the cottage stayed cool between the shade and numerous window fans. There were six adults in our party and the sleeping arrangements were fine. Watkins Glen was only a few minutes away by car so we had easy access to grocery shopping, the state park, Mr Chicken and the wineries. If your dream vacation is to chill with a good book and conversation, interspersed with a nice swim or paddle, this is the place for you. We hope to come back - I already miss waking up in the morning to that incredible view!
This property was as described, very rustic. The views and the beach were the best. With our 2 large White German Shepherds, they had a lot of room to run on the yard at the beach. It was great! A really nice surprise was that I bought a hotspot so I could access the internet even though I was told it was not accessible from the property [that's why the owner installed a land phone]. I was able to get the internet and my cell phone worked from within the cottage. Maureen is an exceptional innkeeper. Very pleasant and kind and very quick to respond.
My wife and I, along with our dog, stayed a week at this property, September 18, 2011. We found the cottage clean, in good repair and very relaxing. The innkeeper, Maureen, is very nice, explains all the policies on arrival, and is always available, if you need something. However, we found we needed nothing. The kitchen have everything you needed if you wanted to cook. The views were great, and the location was central to everything we wanted to do, when we decided to venture out. However, this really is a place to relax, unwind, read a book, get away from it all. The dog loved it. There are ravines on both sides of the property, so if you are worried that your dog might go over the edge chasing a chipmunk, be prepared. If not - let them enjoy themselves. Plus they will like swimming in the clear clean lake. If you don't mind trudging through the surrounding woods, you have to check out the hidden natural treasure in the ravine on the left side of the cottage (facing the lake). There is an unspoiled waterfall that I would estimate to be 90 feet high. All in all, a great vacation spot...the most relaxing and comfortable we've had in years. We already plan to go back in 2012.
The house is curiously antique in some ways, and sustainably outfitted with lighting and materials. The owners have maintained the property well. No TV reception, nor internet was actually a good thing. We weren't distracted by anything other than a bird's song, or the sound of waves. The sunrise light is awesome. Beds were comfortable -slept five, was room for one more. The windows were easy to open/close. Watercraft were fun and easy to launch. It is a wise choice to borrow from the basket of many sizes of watershoes before going swimming - the shells and shale can be sharp! So serene and pleasing - to enjoy a bonfire by the shore. Nifty little waterfalls real nearby. The kitchen is teensy, but the tools to make dinners were all there. We all enjoyed our stay, even though it rained a bit and highs were 68 - 70. Crossing the tracks and following the narrow road down gave us a bit of 'what the?' but once we saw it, it was fine. A vacation rental for those who aren't couch potatoes, but oh, so mellow! Eggs from the farm across the way!
I have rented this cottage for the past 4 years and will be renting it again this summer. I prefer the rustic, secluded setting as it provides a quiet, relaxing atmosphere.
The view from the deck is breathtaking. You can also see the lake from the livingroom and the master bedroom. What an amazing treat to open your eyes to the sunrise on the lake in the morning .I also enjoy the lights on the lake and watching the passing boats at night.
The deck has a glider and several wicker chairs. We spend most of our time on the deck..
The cottage is well equipped, with everything you need to prepare meals. There are usually 6 of us in my party and we have found the cottage to have ample space to house us. The cottage is well maintained and has always been clean.
We enjoy toasting marshmellows in the firepit on shore at night, as well as our daily swim in the lake.
Use of the kayaks and canoe have been a a great added feature. They provide life jackets. It's nice not to have to bring them! They have also added a flush toilet in a shed on shore! It's wonderful not to have to climb the stairs to use the bathroom! I've never rented a cottage that has had this "amenity".
My family and friends refer to the cottage as a "Piece of Heaven"! The only problem is no one wants to leave to visit the wineries!!
We are eagerly awaiting our August stay at the cottage!
