Our active family of 5 had the pleasure of enjoying this house over Christmas break 2016. The grounds are absolutely stunning. While you will not find top of the line appliances here, we did find everything we needed, and more. There are jazz CDs, a few great movies, very comfortable beds with plenty of linens, spacious balconies, sensible, beautiful, low maintenance floors... The home has many well-loved and thoughtful, organic touches that made us feel like we were staying in our very own second home, if that makes sense. Design aesthetes will enjoy this rental. The owner and caretakers were responsive, knowledgeable, and gracious. One of our most enjoyable, easy rental vacation property experiences, ever. We were very pleased to be able to take our dogs with us. Thank you so very, very much for sharing your home.
Its a great location and the hiking right off the property is amazing. You can literally hike all day and not see a single soul. The views from prominence that you can see right out the front windows of the home make the sometimes difficult hike up to it completely worth it. In general, you will not be disturbed while on the property. It is completely isolated from any other homes. It is located a good 15 minute up a narrow dirt road and another 10 min from the last real settlement (the small village where the caretakers reside). So if you love being surrounded by nature and not having any ambiance noise of the outside world, this is the perfect location. The silence is nearly definitely and it was a wonderful respite for us.
The Abiquiu/Canones area in general is very quiet and great for nature lovers. There are some great local hikes and lots of just pure nature to enjoy. The general store in Abiquiu also has all the necessities and this house is well sited for day trips into Santa Fe as well if you miss cities for some reason.
That all said, the house definitely needs a little help. The front steps were very creaky, there were a couple broken screen doors for the doorways to the decks and there were a fairly large amount of flies in the home for some strange reason. None of the informational pamphlets, area magazines, etc were more recent than 2013, there were no contour maps for hiking off the property despite it being mentioned in the informational binder left on the counter. In addition, the directions provided were a bit sketchy. They specify a Y in the road and to take the left branch and this will be the driveway to the property. The split, unfortunately is not obvious at all and it doesnt really even look like a road as it is that eroded and rough. Property access is definitely limited to high clearance all-wheel drive vehicles. Even being told that before hand, we were still surprised at just how rough the driveway was in places so that is definitely something to be aware of when renting the property. These are just things to be aware of if you consider the property. It definitely has a lived in feel at this point and could probably use a little bit of TLC to refresh it.
It was a decent rental for us, but not a great one. We probably wouldn't rent it again if coming back to Abiquiu but we do not regret using it as a base to explore the area for 4 days.
This is a very special place- peaceful and quiet. It is off the beaten path and perfect if you want to hike and explore the beautiful forest nearby. The house has spectacular views and is perfectly kept. It is a gem!
We have stayed at many VRBO's but this place sets itself apart. It may not be the easiest drive, but it is well worth the bumps and turns of the dusty, dirt road. We love rural northern NM, so were all set to like what we found, and what we found was an incredibly well stocked kitchen and home. We loved the little touches as well as the large strokes of the canvas. We felt as though we were sharing this home with someone who loved sharing it with us. All we could talk about was coming back in different seasons to experience Canoncito Creek in its full richness of the colorful hills and creeks, skies and rocky canyons. If you love rural New Mexico for its magical connection to its history, past and present, for its kind and strong, hardworking people, you may find yourself falling in love with this place. We are avid hikers and nature lovers, so this is a gold mine where a hike is available out every door into the national forest, and the chances of running into humans is remote. What you will see and hear and smell in these canyons is remarkable.
The home itself is pure fabulousness with Saltillo tiles, "rustic" hardwood floors, heavy wood beamed ceilings, and comfortable beds. Even the towels were luscious. There are 6-10 foot Windows overlooking the southeast to thick woodlands in front of a jutting mountain. There are three levels of large, sturdy decks which overlook similar views. This home was clearly designed for comfort, beauty, and peace. The architect fit a perfect celebration of NM into a rural retreat worthy of praise. Thank you so very much for sharing your home with us. You made our anniversary memorable in every way.
Great, nothing to improve, just like Jane described. I will go back, best VRBO ever.
We had a great 5 day stay at Canoncito Creek Retreat. Beautiful house, lovely decor, Super Comfortable bed, 3 Awesome patios with fantastic views in every direction. It was so nice to be able to open the windows at night for cool mountain air. Dog friendly was a huge plus! We hiked right out the door into the adjacent canyon and beyond every day. We grilled outside, watched the moon and stars at night from upstairs patio. Very private, quite remote in a good way. The road in is a little rough, but not a problem in late August. The owner was easy to deal with and gave us a lot of good info about the house, area, hiking options. Easy check in/check out. We will definitely stay here again - highly recommend!!!
