We loved coming "home" to Tree Frog Cottage. It was so much fun. We were there from July 30-August 6. I think we just beat the hurricane season as it did not rain much at all. It rained during the night 2 nights and only for a few minutes during 2 of the days we were there.
Tree Frog Cottage was perfect for my husband and 2 daughters (both age 7). The sleeper sofa was comfortable for our daughters and the Queen bed in the lower level was cool and very comfortable at night with the fans and the A/C going. Since it was August the weather was hot and it was necessary to have the A/C at night. During the day we opened up all the upstairs windows and enjoyed a wonderful cross-breeze. Downstairs, we kept the air on during the day while we were there in the a.m and early evening. We stayed gone snorkling in that beauiful Caribbean water every day.
It was so nice to have the use of a washer/dryer! This is a great perk that the owners provide. Tree Frog is clean and the view's outside the windows were beautiful. I loved waking up in the mornings. The view of the bay is best from the corner of the deck. We loved the lush trees and vegetation that we could enjoy from the windows view. We did have so much fun feeding the birds sugar water. They loved our strawberry lemonade mix. We enjoyed grilling out on the grill and the use of a fully equiped kitchen (except for one thing - a Blender!) It would be fun to make fruit smoothies at night. The owners provide beach chairs which were so nice we want to find some like them at home. The shower was roomy and had plenty of water pressure. Note: it is essential that you rent a jeep to drive to Tree Frog. The driveway in is unbelievable! Ruts and dips and bends. It was all part of the fun and adventure for us! The Prop. Mgr. is so nice and helpful and met us the first night to guide us in. She was also quick to respond when the A/C didn't work the 1st night. She fixed it the very next a.m. with a simple repair.
We loved hearing the Morovian church bells ring at 9 a.m. Sun. morning. We wish we knew that Vie's Snack Shack was closed all of Aug & Sept. So we couldn't purchase conch fritters (out of season) or Johnny Cakes. Bummer. STill was a nice ride out to the east end of the island with more beautiful views. Groceries are cheaper in Cruz Bay, but little grocery at the bottom of the hill was convinient. Aqua Bistro was fabulous food. We loved our stay and we would love to come back.
My husband, my daughter, and I stayed in Tree Frog for a week. Pros: The owner and property manager were helpful and easy to communicate with, and the property was as described in the listing. Furnishings are nice and in good shape, attractive decor and good layout. We specifically wanted a place with an indoor vs outdoor staircase since we were traveling with a child- didn't want her traipsing around outside without us if we slept on different floors, and it was perfect. Downstairs bedroom is spacious, and the bed is comfortable. There are lots of beach supplies available for renters to use: several Tommy Bahama beach chairs (the best kind!), coolers, sand toys, etc. The kitchen is well-equipped for preparing meals and cocktails. There were also plenty of extra towels and linens if we needed them, also well-stocked toilet paper and paper towels as well as some bathroom items. We appreciated that some of the pantry and toiletry items are left behind from other guests, like condiments, extra sunblock, bug spray, etc. (We've stayed at places where there was NOTHING!) Lots of privacy- no visible neighbors, no noise other than the sounds of nature. Nice view from upstairs balcony- it was cool to watch the birds during the day and especially cool to watch the bats at dusk. Cons: the drive really is rough. It is not for the inexperienced USVI driver. We didn't mind too much because we planned on eating dinner at the cottage every night anyway, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who plans to eat/drink out then return after dark. We did use the AC downstairs in the bedroom every night... we did not find that the breezes cooled the place enough for the July heat. The patio door opening upstairs lacks a screen, so with it open, the breezes come in, but so do the mosquitoes. Our daughter ended up sleeping downstairs too. There is an AC unit upstairs too, but it didn't seem to do the trick just to cool the place at night. The bathroom was damp and hot 24/7, which came with a gross smell. The towels all smelled a little mildewy. We visit St. John a lot and so we've come to expect these things (you will find the same if not worse at other villas in this price range- TRUST ME!); I only mention it for those who are unfamiliar with St. John rentals. I've heard it's cooler and the AC is not needed at other times of the year, but we've found we need it when we come in late June or July. We enjoyed our trip, and staying at Tree Frog was a good experience.
My husband and I booked the Tree Frog Cottage for vacation in February and we were so excited to stay in this beautiful property. Unfortunately we became worried with the Zika Virus and decided to contact Mark about the trip because I am pregnant. Mark was amazing and responsive and let us know that whatever was best, he would support. I can't tell you the stress Mark took off of us by being so kind and understanding. This tough circumstance reflects his true character and shows well he must care for his property and his guests. This is the type of owner any vacationer would hope to rent from! Hope to go in 2017!!!! Thanks again!
This was our first trip to St. John and WHAT a TRIP! WOW!! Thanks to Mark for his warm hospitality and his manager Sally for meeting us and showing us around. We felt VERY welcomed and it was nothing short of PERFECT. The cottage is INCREDIBLE. We lacked for nothing. The deck, the view, the beach items, (LOVED the beach chairs and huge beach towels!) kitchenware, towels, grill, wifi etc. etc....and even the bed was SO soft and comfy. We slept like babies, while feeling the warm breeze through the windows and sometimes a bit of soft Caribbean music playing from the restaurants below. Every morning an iguana would perch himself up in a tree just off the deck to sun himself. Watch for him! We called him Mr. Sunny. =] Local goats also came to visit us a few times but were pretty skittish. Still very fun to see. The trip up to the cottage was a bit crazy but like the other reviews, once you do it, you are golden. The island itself is full of the friendliest people! We ate out every other night and each had something different to offer. But Tourist Trap and Shipwreck Landing were at the top. GREAT food and great prices. We also went to Aqua Bristol and Skinny Legs. For me, Skinny Legs was a bit over-rated with regard to the food. Very overpriced and we didn't think the burger was that great. But the music was awesome and for anyone liking the bar atmosphere, this was nice. The gift shop connected to the bar is also very nice. My favorite was the Now and Zen gift shop just next to Shipwreck Landing. Really unique gifts. Spent alot there! The beaches...WOW...again amazing. We snorkeled EVERY single day. We got to the beaches by 8:30 (78 degrees by then!) and never had an issue with parking. We stayed til about 2 or 3. Every beach again offered something unique - but as far as seeing beautiful coral - hands down, go to Brown Bay and Haulover Bay. AMAZING. We saw tons of fish, including turtles, needle fish, file fish, blue tangs a zillion minnows that hover near the shore like a cloud. We also went to Salt Pond Bay, Little Lameshur, Maho Bay, Waterlemon Cay, Hawksnest Bay and Trunk Bay. Mark recommended Maho and we went there on day two and again later on in the week. It is so easy to get to and you will see TONS of turtles!!!! THANKS again Mark and Holly!!! We plan to return!!!!
Great spot on the Coral Bay side, quiet and secluded up in the hills (no clear view of the harbor by the way - lots of foliage in the way). Quick access to great food (Indigo Grill, Aqua Bistro) and casual (Skinny Legs). Easy drive to any of the South or East-end water for snorkeling (new fave was Kiddell Bay!) as well as a quick drive to any of the North shore beaches - Maho Bay was the surprise snorkel (turtles, rays, etc. in abundance). Love City Market and Dolphin Market (my preference) are readily accessible as well.
Rental is a steep Jeep ride up the hill and so easy to find off of Centerline road. It was big enough and yet cozy for this couple on their second visit to St. John and has all the amenities necessary to make it a comfortable stay. One minor issue was the comfort of the bed, otherwise no complaint whatsoever. Every evening at dusk there was a display with bats swooping and diving so grab a beverage and enjoy the show. It's a terrific place to set up shop and enjoy the island. I offer a "Highly Recommended" for this little piece of paradise and working with the owners when booking was a breeze. We did not have any contact with the property manager other than a quick email exchange as we do the travel thing regularly. DO FOLLOW the advice on renting a Jeep or other 4WD vehicle.
Tree Frog Cottage is just as described on this site! My husband and I so much enjoyed the serenity and location of this cottage. It was away from noise (except tree frogs, rooster and a dog :-)). The cottage was big enough for us and our needs. The kitchen was used daily and the bedroom and bath being downstairs was awesome! The view from the upper deck is out of this world. We so much enjoyed the upper deck and my husband more than I. Mark was awesome to deal with. He answered all questions in a timely manner and he seems like such a nice person. We stayed 10 nights and I did not want to leave, but the reality is that I had too, but parting was such sweet sorrow. I would love to come back and spend our 50th wedding anniversary at Tree Frog and stay much longer. Also, we don't fish, snorkle, drink, party,or smoke and this cottage was so right for us. However, those that do the above it will be so right for you as well (except no smoking in the cottage) I've already shared Tree Frog with friends and family. Thank you Mark and Holly for allowing us to be there for our 49th wedding anniversary and we pray that you will allow us to stay there again next anniversary! Blessings always, Jamila (Madison, VA)
