Our cabin is remotely located near Rich Mountain Battlefield in Randolph County, West Virginia. If you want privacy and seclusion, this is the place. It’s ideal for anyone wanting a quiet break from the daily grind in life. Rural living brings peace & tranquility along with things you might not be used to - singing birds early in the morning, fire flies & buggy creatures that are normal in the outdoors, plus a total lack of street lights. You're in the country - enjoy it!
THE SPACE-The upper (main) level of our cabin hosts an open floor plan (this means no defined bedrooms). Queen size bed and sleeper sofa are on this level, along with the bathroom, living area and basic kitchen. All linens (bed sheets and towels) are provided. We have an extra set if you choose to change your own during stays of 1 week or more.
A small kitchen is adequately stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, pots and pans, etc. We have a full sized stove & refrigerator, small microwave, coffee pot, and toaster.
Rich Mountain Retreat is a small cabin on approximately six acres open acres and additional wooden acreage. There are no other cabins or homes on the property or within view so its secluded and private, yet located within easy access to historic towns like Elkins and Beverly, West Virginia.
Enjoy watching deer and wild turkey as you relax on the 10 foot porch that surrounds the cabin on three sides. Nearby hiking and walking trails provide a look into Battlefield history during Civil War times. You can spend the day walking thru former camp sites, such as Camp Garrett. Re-enactments of the Battle of Rich Mountain occur each summer in July as part of the Beverly Days Celebrations.
We offer a small grill (bring your favorite charcoal) along with an outdoor fire pit (wood is provided-WV forestry laws prohibit wood from outside the county). We also ask that you refrain from using the fire pit on windy days.
GUEST ACCESS
When you submit a rental request, please give a brief introduction so we can breeze through the booking process with ease. Make sure you have an actual profile photo of yourself, your first and last name, along with the name(s) of your guest(s). We're extending our soon-to-be retirement home with you so let us know where you're from, what you do or what you hope to do while you're visiting. We want to make sure our space suits your needs as well as it does ours.
The entire cabin is for your enjoyment. The upper level is the main floor of living space. The covered porch/deck surrounds the cabin on three sides and offers excellent views of the mountain sunsets.
A partially finished basement houses the washer & dryer, wood stove (for heat) and accommodates additional adult guests with advance notice.
Please note we do NOT have bedrooms, just open space on both levels for sleeping. Make sure you and your guests are comfortable with this. There is a small, private bath on the main level for guests.
Other things to note
CHECK IN/OUT- Check in time is 3pm -7pm, unless otherwise arranged in advance. Let us know when you plan to arrive so we can coordinate our schedules. Check-out is 11am on your date of departure.
WINTER BOOKINGS will require AWD or 4WD access due to high elevation snow accumulation. Our cabin is generally not accessible from January ~ March and weather affects all late fall, winter and/or early spring bookings.
Directions to the cabin will be provided upon booking. Our cabin's street address isn't accurate in maps & navigational systems. We can, however, provide GPS coordinates to confirmed guests or drop you a map pin after booking.
We have chosen NOT to offer wi-fi or lots of other electronic devices at our cabin. There is a small TV with DVD player for watching movies that you bring from home or pick up at the Redbox in town. We purposely encourage others to periodically detox from the constant connection to the virtual world. Talk to your people, reconnect in your relationships and make some memories!
That said, mobile cell coverage is typically very good in this area (some guests have reported Verizon can be sketchy). So, you don't have to be completely unavailable unless you opt to simply turn off your device. We highly recommend that. :)
Hunting & trapping are NOT permitted with this cabin lease. No exceptions!
Outdoor surveillance equipment is in place and monitors key entry points on the property.
For weekly and longer stays, cleaning service and trash pick-up is available for a small fee. Please ask for details!
WATER~ our cabin water supply comes from a deep well on the property. We have also installed a whole house filtration system on the plumbing. You still might encounter some light rust or perhaps a mild odor when first using any of the faucets each day. Rest assured, our water is safe to use, safe to shower in and cook with! That said, you can always bring your own drinking water should you have concerns about using well water.
While we do provide a washer & dryer for our guests to use, please know that whites may become slightly discolored due to minute iron particles from the ground water source..Use at your own discretion. PLEASE CONSERVE! Well water is not unlimited and is subject to the ebbs and flows of our water table, which is directly affected by annual rainfall. Please limit showers to a reasonable time frame of 10-15 minutes to conserve water.
Finally! The SHOWER WATER SUPPLY has the HOLD AND COLD reversed are are labeled accordingly. Hot water can be obtained by using the knob to the right of the faucet and cold water to the left. All other faucets within the cabin are in normal position. Our plumber got in a hurry ~ our apologies!
