Largs Town Centre: The compact town centre, which is only ten minutes walk from the Villa, is attractive and is close to both the sea front and the Cumbrae ferry terminal. Parking can be difficult in the town in high season. The town has a Morrison's supermarket and many shops including WH Smith and Superdrug. There are numerous cafes, bars, restaurants and take- aways.
For the energetic walker and sporty type Largs and surrounding areas offers much including a top class sporting centre. For those who wish to totally relax the promenade walks are gentle, in particular the walk to the Marina, via the Pencil Monument, where you can have a refreshment and dine in very pleasant surroundings.
A regular train service to Glasgow operates seven days a week and it allows for connections to both Glasgow and Prestwick airports. Good reasonably priced taxis are readily available. Frequent bus service to Greenock, Ayr and Glasgow. For full details on methods of travelling to and about Largs and surrounding area, visit the Tourist Information Centre beside railway station.
For historical information visit the Historical Society which is in Manse Court (adjacent to the George Inn in the Main Street). Also St.Columba;s Church.
Golf: Many golfers who wish to play the many excellent courses in Ayrshire -there are 45 of them- (including Turnberry and Royal Troon) use Largs as their base because of the 2 local courses, Routenburn (where a young Sam Torrance learnt his craft) and Kelburn and the fact that most courses are within 15 to 45 minutes drive from Largs. Virtually all courses welcome visitors and are reasonably priced. Expect to pay quite a bit more for Royal Troon and Turnberry and they are likely to ask for handicap certificates. Specific details on courses and their location can be provided on request although the Internet gives considerable detail on each course. The Island of Cumbrae which lies about a mile off the Largs coast has a good 18 holes and provides wonderful vistas of the Clyde and its islands. It is very popular and prior booking is recommended. The Island of Arran has a number of good courses (9 and 18 holes). The Island of Arran is reached by car ferry from Ardrossan (12 miles south of Largs)
Excursion Trips: These are numerous and a visit to the Tourist Information Centre is worthwhile. However have a day out in the county town of Ayr and take in the Robert Burns country. He was born in Alloway just south of Ayr. Burns cottage is now a museum. Close to the cottage is the recently opened Burns Experience Centre. One hour's drive will take you to the Trossachs which on a fine day is a scenic delight. From here you can go onto Stirling and visit its very fine castle. The remarkable Falkirk Wheel in the town of Falkirk should be visited. Rob Roy's country is close by. Take a ferry from Gourock over to the island of Bute (Dunoon or Hunter's Quay) and meander up the A885 through the scenic grandeur wildness of Argylleshire to Tarbet. From there turn south and this will take you beside the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond. Keep on the A82 and cross the Erskine Bridge and back on to the M8 towards Greenock and eventual return to Largs. These are relaxing drives and the roads are seldom busy. Glasgow is 50 min drive from Largs and Edinburgh 1.5 hours.
