To think about The House of Bamboo only one word really comes to mind…WOW! The House of Bamboo was simply our very best stop on our extended journey and our favorite place in the world. We have traveled far and wide and nothing even comes close to the House of Bamboo. As we headed up the stairs we knew that we were in for a treat. The landscaping and flowers were literally falling on our heads, truly an amazing garden. Once we arrived at the top we were absolutely speechless. The place is far more grand and beautiful than I ever imagined.
Brad picked us up from Savusavu airport and as we were driving through town he gave us the run down on where to go, what to see and where to buy provisions. We were in awe of his knowledge of the island. The information he provided us maximized our time and adventure!
Basically our favorite thing was waking up, having a leisurely breakfast outside, either poolside or on the deck. Followed by wonderful snorkeling adventures, literally right out front! Then a soak in the pool, lunch, snorkel, dip in the pool, early dinner while watching the sunset (which is AMAZING) and then maybe a movie! At the House of Bamboo you do not need to leave…
One thing I must add is that I have spent a good portion of my life in a kitchen, chopping, cutting, searing, broiling, etc.. You name it, I have probably cooked it to order a myriad of times. I MUST say that the kitchen is spectacular! All the tools you need for gourmet meals are there. I was extremely impressed, the kitchen was above and beyond my expectations and those are extremely high!
Everything at the House of Bamboo is completely luxurious and completely spotless.. We will stay there again and we look forward to some day taking some children along with us! This is simply the best place and best value on the island. If you are planning a trip, I would not spend a bunch of time looking at all the options the island has to offer, I would not waste time comparing resorts. I did that and I am 100% convinced that booking the House of Bamboo is the best decision of your trip that you will make. We booked 4 days but should have booked 40. Do yourself a favor and stay here!
Also, there is mention of the 100+ stairs up to the house. Piece of cake! I/We would easily climb 100,000 stairs to stay here, it is well worth it. Heck, we would climb 100,000 stairs to look out across the bay!
This is simply the best decision you can make.
It's hard to describe just house perfect this house was for us! We saw the House of Bamboo on VRBO months before we booked it but kept coming back to it as it looked gorgeous. When we arrived Bruce the new owner picked us up from the airport which we were really grateful for after such a long flight.
The house is up 125 steps (we counted them!) and so worth the climb as the view from the house is outstanding. The pool was perfect and the outside space just beautiful as behind you is nothing but trees and flowers and in front is that view!! The house itself is very comfortable but we just slept and cooked in it...other than that we spent most of our time outside either swimming, staring at the incredible views or watching the little birds who built a nest just outside the house hatch and feed their babies :)
The house would comfortably sleep 6 as two more bedrooms downstairs and the Pod House that is just down a few steps from our house (also owned by Bruce and Jen) would sleep another couple if you needed more room for a bigger party - the Pod House is also beautiful!
The house is a walk from the Costeau Resort and only about USD5.00 into town and cabs are easy to get so you're not too far out although at the house you feel like you're the only people for miles!
So, if you're looking for a perfect honeymoon this place is perfect! Kalisi the lady who cleans the house before you arrive is also an incredible cook, we'd highly recommend you getting her to cook her Indian and traditional Fiji dish for you. It's a great experience as you meet her at the market and buy the food and for an addition USD9 per person and her cab ride home, another USD 5 or so, she'll come up to the house and cook for you. She's such a lovely lady too and made the whole experience amazing.
Savusavu is not very touristy at all but we found a few cool places to eat and have a few drinks (by the way if you are drinkers bring as much duty free as you can as alcohol is seriously expensive at the liquor stores!!!)
We would definitely go back there but as we live in Denver it's a LONG way but the experience was just wonderful - the Fijians are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
So thanks Bruce and Jen....we SO hope we get back to visit again some time in the future!
We arrived at the Savusavu airport and were greeted by Bruce and Jennifer. On the way up to the House of Bamboo, they were kind enough to offer to stop in town so we could pick up a few groceries. They showed us where to buy bread and where to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at the local market. We did not expect this. They did not have to take time out of their day so we could stop and get groceries. It was very much appreciated and very thoughtful.
Once we got to the house they carried our baggage up to the house for us. After showing us around the house, we were left to enjoy our week long stay in paradise. The accommodations exceeded our expectations. No need for A/C as the ceiling fans in the house keep it comfortable. The house is fully stocked with appliances such as coffee maker, tea kettle, toaster etc. We found that they had everything here that we needed. If there is something that you can't find, but need, don't hesitate to contact Bruce or Jennifer.
The house does have power adapters for your electronics /small appliances and the owners also supply Pure Fiji shampoo/conditioner and soap. During our stay, we made use of the BBQ on the front deck. We should also mention that there is also a washing machine to do laundry while you're here. There is excellent snorkelling right infront of the property and split rock swim. Bring bread to feed the fish.
One thing I wanted to note is that The house is not within walking distance to town, however, taxis are cheap and will pick you up and take you into town for approximately $8 Fiji.
There are steps to be taken on the way up to the house. I would not recommend the mobility challenged attempt these daily. Having said this , the view at the top is worth it.
We had an opportunity to view the pod house. The pictures do not do this place justice. Whether you choose to stay at the pod house or the house of bamboo, you can't go wrong!
We celebrated our 10 yr wedding anniversary while here and enjoyed the romantic atmosphere Every day, we stopped to appreciate the million dollar view from the front deck and from the infinity pool. If I could give this place more than 5 stars ... I would! Bruce and Jennifer, thank you again for opening your home to us. We can't wait to come back!
We have just returned from two glorious weeks in this beautifully appointed and extremely comfortable house.
Although there are 100 steps upto the house (which may be challenging to some, those with mobility issues and especially small children) the view and privacy is well worth the climb. Without the climb you would not have the views of the ocean and the all day sun.
The house is very well equipped, with large comfortable beds and two bathrooms. The expansive wooden deck stretches out from the open plan living/dining/kitchen area and is covered which gives respite from the sun, if you should need it. The pool is a few steps from the deck(not suitable for young children as unfenced) and just perfect for cooling off, and watching the yachts go by.
Kitchen is well equipped, and ideal for self catering
As others have said there is great snorkelling just below the house : opposite culvert 63 there is a red buy indicating Split Rock which is a haven for a wide variety of fish and coral.
The house is several kms from Savusavu and although there is a bus service, we hired a car (small 4x4 as the road is unsealed). However, taxis are very inexpensive to use and very reliable.
Savusavu is very unspoilt and caters for the local population and the visiting yachts, so don't expect a lot of tourist items for sale. There are good supermarkets, two excellent bakers, and a wide range of shops. There is a very good butchers (Fiji Meats) and we used this several times buying there cooked chickens (go early and place your order then pick it up later in the day, and don't be put off by the exterior!). Alcohol is expensive but Sally's on the main street has a great wine cellar and reasonably priced...There are a number of places to eat(especially Captains Table at Copra Shed), and all a good price. We joined the Yacht Club at the Copra Shed which has a great bar, and atmosphere, just talk to the staff about joining..
We would highly recommend this house to anyone who wants to relax, refresh and renew...you'll not want to leave.
Our time at The House Of Bamboo was wonderful. The infinity pool was amazing and is where we spent most of our time. The large porch was beautiful and a great place to relax and enjoy the view. The entire house is a little piece of heaven. The town, markets and restaurants are easily accessible by taxi and all are reasonably priced.
Cyclone Winston hit while we where there and we experienced how amazing the people of Savusavu are!! Brad and Therese showed us genuine compassion and concern and helped contact friends and family!! Would highly recommend staying here and will return.
Words are just not enough to be able to explain how wonderful The House of Bamboo and Savusavu truly is....but I'll try.
Therese & Brad have created a little slice of Fijian heaven in the treetops. The house felt like the luxury treehouse of your childhood dreams, & was set up in such a way as to have absolutely everything that anyone could want. Filled with beautiful paintings, items, traditional Fijian decor, & books. Pure Fiji products, beautiful linen & towels to spoil.
The bespoke kitchen cabinetry is absolutely beautiful, vasi wood tops, doors made from contrasting timbers, even down to the little brass seashell cabinet handles!
Every window revealed views of Savusavu Bay which was a constant changing scene, dawn, dusk cloudy and blue. We took hundreds of photos of the changing view.
Beautiful gardens surrounded us filled with various flowers & native fruit trees like Kura, Kavika. And a traditional Fijian Bure that we lazed under with wine & books even in the rain.
We went for morning swims pinching ourselves as we looked over our view completely hidden away from anyone. Watching the ferry slowly cruising in then jumped out of the pool and washed off under the outdoor shower...picked fresh passionfruit that was peeping out at us at the shower..then up to the deck for breakfast.
We swam in the evening under the stars and watched the lights of the Cousteau jetty below us.
My husband is Fijian & living in Australia was pining for food from home. We had planned to go out to restaurants etc on the trip...but we had too much fun going into the markets and buying our fish and market produce & cooking
It was hard to tear ourselves away from our little haven & hire a car for 3 days & explore.
We used Brads suggested car hire firm (listed on the very informative compendium) & they were beyond helpful...amazingly professional & polite service, Nadi could "take a leaf". We had an amazing couple of days exploring.
The property is perched very high at the top of alot of stairs, anyone with mobility issues just wouldn't be able to manage. My husband has really bad knees & I'm quite "rubanesqe" myself! & the stairs were fine. Also we were diligent to have mozzie coils going and never once had an issue.
A tropical depression passed & we had a 24 hour blackout, that was no problem.
Brad & Therese were simply amazing in every step of our process, they are born for hospitality. We cannot thank them enough for creating & sharing their beautiful home.
