These exceptional historic cottages have undergone meticulous conversion from the outbuildings of the Grade II* listed Torr Vale Mill, a site that once proudly held the title of Englandâs longest continuous working mill from 1785 to 2000. Nestled in a deep valley along the banks of the River Goyt, each cottage possesses a distinct character and preserves captivating remnants of its industrial heritage.
The cottage in focus was originally the living quarters of the full-time fireman responsible for maintaining a constant fire in the boiler room when the mill transitioned to steam power. This charming conversion situates the light and comfortable bedrooms on the ground floor, while the main living area, positioned upstairs, offers breathtaking views of the iconic mill and the flowing River Goyt. A brief stroll past the imposing chimney stack leads to the award-winning Millennium Walkwayâa 160 m-long cantilevered marvel that winds through the rugged gritstone gorge at Torrs, New Mills. This area, renowned for its exceptional natural beauty and unique industrial archaeological heritage, provides a picturesque backdrop for exploration.
Perched on the northwest edge of the Peak District, New Mills is a thriving town adorned with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and pubs. Its proximity to the National Park ensures easy access to an array of beautiful towns and villages like Edale, Castleton, and Hope, all reachable within around 30 minutes. The National Trustâs Lyme Park awaits approximately 20 minutes away, while Eyam, Bakewell, and the grand Chatsworth House are all within a 40-minute drive. For a change of pace, the vibrant cities of Manchester and Sheffield are easily accessible via direct train from New Mills station. A pub is conveniently located within a mile.
