For history lovers, a visit to Vindolanda Roman Fort and Army Museum (3.5 miles) is a must. This extraordinary archaeological site brings Roman Britain to life with excavated ruins, artefacts, and live digs in the summer months. The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre (3 miles) is packed with interactive exhibits about the local landscape, walking trails, and a rooftop view that's not to be missed. It's also a great stop off point for exploring Hadrian's Wall Country, with dramatic views, scenic walks, and the charming village of Gilsland, 9.5 miles from the cottage. Head 13 miles to Hexham, home to Hexham Abbey, Sele Park, and Hexham Racecourse.
