“THE SUPERCOOL COUNTRY HOUSE” — THE TIMES
Somerleaze House is a characterful English country house in Somerset, where Victorian architecture, bold contemporary interiors and twelve acres of beautiful grounds come together to create a place to slow down, reconnect and spend time well.
Designed by Jo Berryman Studios, the house is full of colour, texture and unexpected design details, from retro-futuristic leather sofas to the recently refurbished kitchen. Somerleaze features on the cover of Jo’s first book, Expressive Interiors, and retains many of its original architectural details, including mullion windows, shutters and an impressive arched ecclesiastical-style entrance.
Wellbeing is naturally woven into the experience. Start the day with a workout in the garden gym, complete with Pilates equipment, rowing machine and Red Light panel, followed by a cold plunge and time in the horse-box sauna. Swim in the heated pool, wander through the walled garden, take a walk through the surrounding countryside or make your way down to the private river. There are plenty of spaces to move, play, rest and reconnect, whether that's a morning run, a game of five-a-side football, an afternoon in the pool or a quiet moment beneath one of the estate's ancient trees.
The result is a different kind of country-house stay: active when you want it to be, restorative when you don't. A place where adults can properly switch off while children have the freedom to explore, play and be outdoors.
Set just outside Frome, one of Somerset's most creative market towns, Somerleaze is also perfectly placed for exploring the wider region. Independent shops, cafés, markets and galleries are close by, while the surrounding countryside offers beautiful walks, including routes towards the picturesque village of Mells and its riverside paths.
Food lovers are well catered for too, with some of Somerset's best dining within easy reach, from Michelin-starred restaurants in Bruton to country pubs such as The Talbot Inn and the celebrated gardens and dining at The Newt. Bath, Bristol, Wells, Glastonbury, Longleat, Cheddar Gorge and Stourhead are all within easy reach, with Stonehenge around 45 minutes away.
For larger gatherings, the Somerleaze Exclusive collection brings together the main house, The Old Stables and additional accommodation across the estate. The Old Stables is a more rustic, elemental take on the Somerleaze aesthetic, combining stone, timber and earthen-hued finishes with a relaxed West Country character.
Somerleaze is ultimately about coming together — around the kitchen table, in the garden, by the pool or out in the countryside — with enough space and freedom for everyone to find their own rhythm.
Please note: The main house does not have wheelchair access to the upper floors. The self-contained cottage is accessible, with all accommodation and facilities on one level.
While the Somerleaze estate is wonderfully private, we ask guests to be mindful of our neighbours and the surrounding countryside. Amplified music is not permitted and outdoor noise should be kept to a minimum in the evenings. No parties, hens, stags, weddings or events. Thank you.
