HISTORY
The suite is located in the centre house of (New) Sydney Place. The house is the focal point of the terrace with its central pediment carved with the Vane family crest, and elegant architectural detail that reflects all that is impressive of the Regency period. Built in 1808 and listed as Grade 1, First Rate – the highest rating in Bath – the terrace faces the only remaining Georgian Pleasure Gardens in England, and the Holburne Museum in its grounds.
Originally designed by Thomas Baldwin, (New) Sydney Place was completed by John Pinch the Elder and built in 1808 for William Henry Vane, Earl of Darlington and Marquess of Cleveland. This unique royal terrace was occupied by Queen Charlotte in 1817, at 93 Sydney Place, and Prince Regent (William 1V, Duke of Clarence) at 103. Echoing the neo-classical mansions found within country estates, the terrace has the perfect symmetry and regency detail that highlights both the significance of the centre house (98) and the balanced and harmonious royal residences at either end.
The Vane family crest in the centre of 98's pediment and on a glass panel within the entrance hall. Other features include: a rare cast iron heating system, the original hall lantern, stunning marble fireplaces and over mantels, original servant bells, ovens, shelves and floors in the basement, remnants of hand-painted wallpapers and a carpenter's hat (discovered after 200 years between the floor joists) in the beautifully restored piano noble, a cantilevered bath stone staircase, an original handrail with lyre motifs at each landing within the cast iron spindles, stunning cornices and ceiling roses, and beautiful windows and views at all levels making connections with nature to the front and the rear. Chandeliers and lanterns adorn every floor.
