If you love a view across water, you can’t do better than Pier House.
This beautiful, detached house sits right on the River Dart, so that the water laps against the garden wall at high tide. Its unique position – on Dittisham village quay, yet within its own secluded garden, private pool and sundeck – means that guests at Pier House can enjoy the very best of riverside living.
There’s always lots to do in and around Pier House, especially for families with older children. Swim in the pool, kayak or paddle board around the river, learn to sail, play football on the village pitch (surrounded by curious sheep), catch crabs on the pontoon or search for treasures along the beach."
Pier House was built in the Seventies, by two women who modelled it on a Spanish hacienda. Recently refurbished, it remains true to that original vision, with whitewashed walls, hand-painted tiles, Mediterranean arches, palm trees and a heated outdoor swimming pool.
The large garden has two levels: one encircling the ground floor of the house, with lush lawns and flowerbeds, a summer house, a barbecue, and a four-metre table for outdoor dining; and the other higher up at the back of the house, where the swimming pool nestles in a bank of wildflowers studded with fruit trees. Here you can relax in the furnished gazebo, hammock or swing seat, enjoying the glorious views across the Dart estuary.
Inside, the house is furnished to the highest standard, with an eclectic mix of vintage pieces and modern luxury.
There are four bedrooms, all with sumptuously comfortable beds: one superking, one king, one twin and one that can be arranged as either twin beds or a superking.
Every bedroom enjoys wonderful views, with the master bedroom featuring a bifold door that slides right back to open up a balcony overhanging the river.
Each bedroom has its own bathroom with underfloor heating (three of them ensuite).
The communal areas include a large, well-equipped kitchen with a Smeg induction range and Fischer and Paykal fridge freezer, and a sitting room with multiple seating areas. Sip your morning coffee in front of the huge picture window, watching the sailing boats, birds and visiting seals go by (binoculars and bird-watching books supplied).
When the night draws in, settle into the comfy sofa in front of a roaring fire, watch a movie on the smart TV, or choose from the library of board games.

Dittisham is one of the prettiest villages in Devon, situated among the rolling hills of the South Hams. The village boasts two pubs (one of which also serves as a well-stocked shop) and a renowned seafood cafe, The Anchorstone.
During the summer, the quayside is the centre of village life, with children crabbing along the pontoon, and paddle boards, sailing boats and kayaks available for hire.
Pier House, which sits at the end of the Quay, is both right in the middle of the action – one minute walk from the Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchorstone – and set apart from it, within its own grounds.
The handsome town of Dartmouth, home of the Royal Naval College, is a 20 minute drive away – or a scenic 30 minute ferry ride.
Salcombe, Totnes and Brixham are all a short drive away, as are the wide, curving beaches of Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands.
The main town of Dartmouth is a 15 minute drive away or a ferry boat ride down the river in the summer. The area is full of wonderful walks by the river and leafy lanes.
YOUR SAFETY
Pier House is a Seventies house, build with little regard for safety. It has high walls that can be fallen off, stone stairs that can be fallen down, uneven crazy paving and a pool and a river to drown in.
The owners are not liable for any accidents that may happen in Pier House or its grounds.
