Stay in the lovingly decorated rooms in our garden wing.
The space
Come and stay in the beautifully furnished garden wing of Tan House, a stunning Mediterranean style villa, which has been a delightful guest house for four decades, offering lovely accommodation, culinary treats, residential workshops and a great many events over the years.
Now under new ownership and elegantly refurnished, this listing is for our 5 bedroom garden wing on a self catering basis.
It has independent living spaces to the main house and its own kitchen, utility room, living room, dining area and bathrooms. Sleeps 10 comfortably.
Additional accommodation also available, at our hillside retreat on site. We can host between 10 to 18 across both the Garden wing and Hillside retreat plus Glamping.
Guests are welcome to share the formal gardens and 20 acres of land but also have their own private fenced garden.
We may be able to offer flexibility on check in and check out times. Please feel free to enquire.
Tan House is a beautiful example of a late seventeenth century Restoration property built, around 1670, during the reign of Charles II.
‘Tanhouse’ as it was then known, was formerly the principal house of an oak bark tannery; one of the largest in the country.
For six generations, it was home to the eminent Probyns who were a wealthy family with several properties in Newland.
The current owners are the Somerset Raglans, part of the Beaufort family who share a rich and close history with the area.
They will continue to grow the legacy that is Tan House Newland and welcome you, as guests, to their home.

Guest access
Guests share use of the extensive gardens. There is a long brook running through our grounds which can get quite high in rainfall. There are also four ponds. None of these are fenced so please be very careful around them especially with small children and anyone unstable on their feet. Thank you.
The Forest of Dean has some fantastic sightseeing opportunities and we’d be happy to recommend our favourites.
We live on the edge of Newland village and kindly ask guests to be mindful of our neighbours on arriving and leaving. For this reason, we also request no acoustic music or loud noise outdoors.
We are next to a stream and have four ponds so ask that you are careful with children, pets and anyone with restricted mobility.
The gardens and grounds are shared with us and are mostly un-fenced and open-plan, so please be careful and mindful of children, animals and vehicles. We too will be very respectful of your safety and privacy whilst you are here.
Please make a special request if you’d like to bring a pet.
Please note that we are a small working estate of 20 acres. During your stay, there is a chance we may need to carry out tree work, essential repairs, maintenance of the ground, buildings and farmland. We will do all we can to ensure the least disruption so that you have a comfortable stay.
