The nearby market town of Bishop Auckland has independent shops, tea rooms and restaurants, hosting the fabulous and hugely popular Kynren Historic spectacle, for which early booking is essential. Visit Bishop’s Palace and Park, with its ancient Deer House and Walled Gardens, or the Spanish Art Gallery (opening spring 2021) in the attractive marketplace. The pretty village of Staindrop is just 5 miles away, and offers tea shops, cafés, and a local family butcher. Visit Raby Castle en route where 200 deer wander the grounds.
