Craigston castle. Experience our family home

Craigston Castle was built by my family in 1604. This Grade A listed building is still our family home and we only rent it approximately 12 weeks a year (usually May to October). We get great pleasure in offering people an insight into what it is like to live in a place like this. The income we earn is all directed to conserving the building and estate. Prices vary dependent on the month. Please ask.

Environmental, social as well as economic sustainability are very much at the heart of all that we do at Craigston. We are trying to turn the estate as “green as possible “and an important part of that has been converting the castle heating and hot water from oil to biomass. Our state-of-the-art boiler is fuelled by chipping wood that is harvested (and then replanted) from the estate. We are always looking at other ways of improving on our footprint. In 2021 we conducted a whole estate carbon audit, and we are proud to say that “we are carbon negative”. We use Eco Friendly detergents/cleaning stuff, recycled toilet paper and kitchen roll, we offer you the use of fabric shopping bags and fabric napkins during your stay and much more.

At Craigston, each room is unique and beautifully decorated with period furniture including some original four-poster beds. Each room has its own bathroom, either ensuite or dedicated. In the evening you can sit in the drawing room and enjoy a good whisky from one of the many local distilleries.

We can provide you with our partners contacts to organize professional whisky tasting in the castle, catering, cook etc, or outdoor activities like clay pigeon shooting, archery and falconry sessions in the castle grounds. A welcome hamper, shopping, maid service / extra cleaning, are also available for an extra cost (but need to be booked in good time).

The main reception rooms include the spacious drawing room with the open fire, the anti drawing-room, and the Queen's room which has satellite SMART TV. The traditional kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances, with plenty of storage room in the adjacent larder. Meals can be eaten either in the kitchen or in two dining rooms: the Morning room, and the Colonia room.

A beautiful library is available to visit, please just ask.

The estate's 750 acres of parkland and farm are at your disposal to explore and enjoy. There are a number of trails to walk, or even bike, and you will find beautiful 18th century stone bridges that cross estate burns and brooks. There are plenty of wild animals to be seen including roe deer, foxes, badgers, red squirrels, pine martens, hares, woodcock, owls, buzzards, sparrow hawks, and ospreys.

The castle is 5 miles from one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world where you will find picturesque fishing villages and beautiful beaches. The nearest village of Turriff (5 miles away) has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pubs, etc.

Nearby:

Banffshire Coast
Nicknamed Scotland’s secret dolphin coast, Banffshire is a place of undisturbed natural beauty where dolphins, gannets, porpoises, puffins, and the occasional whale make their home. It is dotted with fishing villages such as Penan (famous for the filming of “Local Hero”), Sandend, and Crovie which have remained remarkably well preserved and which have resisted the advances of too much modern development. The coastline is dramatic and breath-taking but very accessible with many clifftop walks and wonderful beaches.

Castles
There are a great many castles to see in Aberdeenshire and many form part of the Castle trail. The area includes Haddo Country Park, Fyvie Castle, and Craigievar (which inspired Walt Disney to create the castle we see in his famous films). Royal Deeside is also not far away where you can see Balmoral Estate one of the late Queen's preferred private residence prominently featured in the TV series the Crown.

Walking
As well as the stunning coastal walks there are a number of excellent walks/trails in Aberdeenshire including, Mount Keen (Cairtngorms National Partk), Dunnotter castle via stonehaven, Fetteresso (Three stones Hill Circular), Balmoral Cairns, Bennachie Forest Peaks loop etc etc ...

Nature and Wildlife
Nature Reserves in Aberdeenshire include Sands of Forvie (a beautiful spot with endless sand dunes and plentiful birdlife); the Loch of Strathbeg (home to 252 species of bird, including 20 percent of the world's population of pink-footed geese); Troup Head Nature Preserve and Glen Tanar.

The Cairngorms National Park
The UK's largest national park with 4,500 sq km of unspoilt countryside. From the traditional town of Grantown-on-Spey (1h 45min drive from Craigston) to the highest village of Tomintoul.

Golf
Craigston is a great base for a week's golfing holiday. Indeed, you could play two different courses every day of your stay and only travel 30 to 40 mins by car. Some of the closest include: Royal Tarlair Golf Club, Turriff Golf Club, Craibstone Golf, Huntly Golf Club, Old Meldrum Golf Club, Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, Duff House Golf Club, Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen, etc etc...

A True Fairytale!
From the time we arrived, Craigston Castle felt like our Scottish home. Elisabetta was a great help and the staff was terrific. We came for our daughter’s wedding at Fyvie Castle and decided to have a family reunion too. I loved the castle and also the surrounding land. It was a true fairytale. We hope to return one day!!!

Visit of a lifetime
Our stay at Craigston Castle - will be etched on all of our minds for the rest of our lives :) From the moment Elisabetta welcomed us, to the moment we hugged her goodbye ... the entire stay was like being in a dream. It warmed our hearts when Elisabetta said, not long after we first met, "this is now your home now" ... Our home? A castle? That was mind blowing ... We had 10 guests who all flew in from California to celebrate a marquee birthday and also to gather, rest, relax, and explore some new experiences. The 10 of us took up 5 rooms. All of the rooms were beautifully furnished, which we later found out to be authentic and antique ... much of the furniture was built at the castle, in the actual rooms (as it would have been impossible to make off-site and bring up the spiral staircase). All of the photos in the rooms of family members were also of the Urquhart family and their friends and the paintings are all catalogued. We had invited a private Chef, Roma (who Elisabetta had recommended) to help with meals (Breakfasts, Lunch, Snacks and Dinner), which made all the difference. We also booked some activities on the castle grounds, which we could have done off-site, but "hey, we're staying at a Castle" ... so why not?! Activities included, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Whiskey Tasting, Archery and Falconry. All of them we coordinated/contracted with directly, but all were recommendations from Elisabetta. Each expert that came onsite, was super nice, knowledgeable and stayed as long as we wanted. Elisabetta, who lives on premise in her own separate/private wing of the castle, also agreed to give our group a tour. It was then, that the majesty and history of the castle came alive and there were many moments afterwards that we would imagine what it would have been like for the owners/families and staff moving around the castle and grounds. We would gather throughout the morning at the breakfast table and also outside in the mornings. We had dinner in both of the large dining rooms, and gathered in the evenings in the drawing room, playing charades, laughing and telling stories. This is truly a magical place. Well worth the drive up from Aberdeen (closest airport) and only 10mins to Turriff (the closest town) and 20mins to the coast. We will recommend Craigston Castle to all our friends and look forward to returning one day soon. Thank you.

I was born at Craigston (as were 11 generations of my family). I inherited the castle and estate from my grandfather (Bruce Urquhart) in 1995. Sadly we are unable to live at Craigston all year around as we both work for international organisations (UN, WWF International) and so are often based abroad. But we are able to organise things so that our boys were born at Craigston. Currently we are mainly based between Rome, Italy (where Kasia works for the World Food Programme). We hated the idea of the house being empty when we weren't there and also in order to help raise some money for its conservation we decided to open our home to people for a limited number of weeks each year. We are excited that a few individuals each year can experience living in a place as big and as grand, yet homely as Craigston. Our good friend Elisabetta lives in a self contained flat in the South Wing and she'll be your host or sometimes I can also maybe there to welcome you.

Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft

They say that an Englishman's home is his castle and this is your chance to make a Scottish castle your home for a short stay. It is our family home, and has been since 1604. The house is really special to us and we are determined to ensure that we can leave it in good shape to our boys. It is furnished with much of the original furniture from the 18th C but also has modern conveniences (bathrooms, SAMRT TV, heating etc). Whilst you will have exclusive use of the property a family member or our close friend (Elisabetta) will be staying in a self contained flat in the South wing and so on hand to provide suggestions and help if needed.

Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig

There are not many castles from the 1600s that are still lived in by the family who built them and even fewer that are available for you to stay in. It is not a hotel, it is our home so you will experience the grandeur of a castle but the warmth of a family home. We try and be as environmentally conscious as possible, eg our heating is by wood chip from our own forests, we have put in wetlands for water birds and planted lots of hedges for wildlife, we use recycled toilet paper and kitchen rolls, almost all the detergent are bio, we offer the use of fabric napkins to reduce wasting a lot of paper and more. After a carbon audit done in 2021, we are proud to say that we are Carbon negative
