I live and work here with Nicholas my husband and our son John who lives on our second farm at Blubberhouses and comes in everyday to work. We run a Dairy and sheep farm, farming just over 500 acres. In 2019 we installed 3 milking robots to milk our herd of 150 Holstein cows, we keep all the calves and rear them to 2 ears old when the males and continental breeds are sold on and all the females are kept for replacements in the dairy herd. We try to be as green as possible by growing as much of the fodder needed for winter here and harvesting it ourselves so keeping fuel use as low as possible. In 2012 we invested in a wind turbine to produce some electricity for the business and we also sell the excess back to the grid. Nicholas's mother's family moved here in 1932 after being moved of their farm to make away for a new reservoir. Mary Houseman was11 years old and came with her mother father and two older sister. In July 1945 Mary married George Houseman ( note she didn't have to change her surname) and they stay here and George worked together with Jesse his father in law to run the farm, taking over when Jesse retired. Nicholas grow up here with his older bother and sister and young brother and has worked here since leaving school.
In 1981 I married Nicholas and we lived at our other farm at Blubberhouses where we had our son John in 1988 and we moved here in 1999 after building a granny flat for Mary which is now the Old Calf Shed and we converted the Pig Garth in 2018. In 2020 we welcomed George our lockdown grandson and in 2021Lily completed the family.
This year we are having a change around and John and family are moving up here and Nicholas and myself are moving across the yard into one of the barns.
