The private grounds of Wyck Beacon House are entered through manual gates, which lead to a large gravel area, with ample parking space for all guests. The front door opens into a large entrance hall, with ample storage space for coats, boots and other outdoor clothing.

All the main ground floor rooms are accessed directly from the entrance hall: Living room: A large, dual aspect room, with French doors leading directly out to a decked area of the garden. The room is beautifully furnished, with a number of deep, comfy sofas, a real fire and a flat-panel satellite TV. Dining room: The perfect room for entertaining family and friends in style, this spectacular room includes a real fire, wooden flooring, chandeliers and a large, period dining table and chairs, with seating for 14; Kitchen: A large room, with a table and chairs seating six or seven adults and a centre island. The well equipped kitchen has a range cooker, microwave, toaster, Nespresso coffee machine (capsules not provided) and dishwasher. Accessed from the kitchen is a large utility room, which includes an American style fridge-freezer and a washing machine/tumble dryer. The utility room has a door out to the garden; Study/playroom: Contains a desk, sofa and satellite TV; Bedroom 6: Contains one small double / large single bed, one single bed and a double sofa bed with foam mattress, which is ideally suited to children or one adult; Downstairs toilet: Contains a basin and a toilet.Stairs lead up from the ground floor to the first floor landing, off which are five bedrooms and a family bathroom: Bedroom 1 (en-suite): Contains a king size bed. The bathroom contains a walk-in shower, double basin, toilet and bidet; Bedroom 2 (en-suite, shared with bedroom 3): Contains a king sized bed. The Jack and Jill bathroom, shared with bedroom 3, contains a bath, separate shower, double basin and toilet; Bedroom 3 (en-suite, shared with bedroom 2): Contains two single beds, which can be joined together to form a super-king size bed; Bedroom 4 (en-suite): Contains a king size bed. The bathroom contains a walk-in shower, basin and toilet; Bedroom 5: Contains two single beds, which can be joined together to form a super-king size bed; Family bathroom: Directly opposite bedroom 5, contains a bath with shower attachment, basin and toilet.Heading back downstairs and outside, the 2.2 acres of enclosed garden surround the house, with the large area to the rear of the house mostly laid to grass, with various shrubs and trees interspersed. A large wooden decking area, with table, chairs and barbecue, is immediately outside the living room. The garden also contains an impressive children's activity centre, as well as a full size, but poorly maintained, tennis court with a basketball hoop (see Key Features).

Wyck Beacon is a large country house, set in more than two acres of gardens, in the heart of the Cotswold's rolling countryside. Despite the tranquil setting, the house is only 3 miles from the beautiful market towns of Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water, and is a short drive or cross-country walk from The Feathered Nest Country Inn, winner of the AA Pub of the Year (England) 2011. The house dates back approximately 70 years and has been beautifully decorated and furnished, with many character features, including real fires in both the living and dining rooms, wood panelling and antique furniture. The grand dining room, with its chandeliers and beautiful period table and chairs, is a particular feature of the house, perfect for both formal and informal dining. There is a wide range of artwork in the house, which reflects the owner's background in the music and entertainment industries. Complementing these character features, the house has modern facilities, including wireless internet access, satellite TV and a state of the art, integrated TV and music system. The house sleeps a maximum of 14 people, in six bedrooms, one of which is on the ground floor. There are four bathrooms and a downstairs toilet. The flexible layout of the bedrooms makes Wyck Beacon an ideal retreat for large family gatherings or groups of friends seeking a perfect country retreat.

Very nice house

12 of us stayed for 2 nights. The house is very well presented and comfortable. Dawn was masingly helpful. I would make two tiny changes - bigger towels and provide more large bowls and platters so serving dinner for 12 does not involve loads of small bowls.

Lovely setting for a large group

The house is well equipped and a great size for large groups. We particularly enjoyed the large lounge and dining table big enough to fit all of us. The grounds are perfect for children to run around in. There was plenty of space so we didn’t feel crowded in the house.

The location is also very good – we enjoyed some Cotswold walking and the Cotswold Farm park.

However, before our trip I felt that some of the communication was a little over officious. Demanding details for room set ups asap 5 months in advance of our trip. We also found much of the communication in the house folder to be a little passive aggressive, especially added to the laminated signs around the house. What can’t be seen in the online photos is that there are lots of personal belongings in the house and some interesting art choices. This makes it feel more like a family house than a holiday let. When combined with the interior cameras, this made us feel uncomfortable and not very welcome in the house.

There was one evening when we had boiler trouble and called the maintenance man. He was with us in under 30 minutes and was very helpful. He fixed the hot water, waiting to make sure that it was fully working. He also disconnected the cameras for us to reassure us that we were not being filmed.

Vermieter-Kommentar: Character Cottages, as a marketing agency, does not look after or maintain any cottages. The following is written by the owner's appointed property manager at Wyck Beacon House: "Firstly, thank you for providing feedback on your recent stay at the property. We all work hard to ensure that our guests enjoy their time at the homes we manage. It is lovely to hear that our maintenance reacted as quickly as they did when you had an issue. We always prioritise our guests above all others, and are pleased that this was again the case. It was also good to hear that you appreciated the homely feel of the property; this has been the subject of positive comments from many previous guests. The property owner has advised that the security cameras are only activated when the sophisticated alarm system is triggered. I can appreciate your dislike of the advisory notes at the property - we also dislike the fact that they are required at all. Whilst the majority of guests are respectful of the owners’ property and contents, and leave the house in a tidy condition, there are some who do not. Unfortunately, past guests have left the house in an awful state; one which requires many hours of additional cleaning and restoration, replacement of broken items, or decorating and maintenance, all at the last minute. Whilst we do not have any dealings with the booking system, we can understand that bed configurations need to be requested at the time of confirming the booking – otherwise the booking process would not be complete. However, all guests are able to amend their selections up to one week prior to their arrival, and the changes would be promulgated to the relevant parties for action. When changes are necessary, the guests usually just email the Property Manager to advise the new details."

Such a disappointment

Despite our having been assured by the rental agent that our requests for sheets and blankets would be honored, when we arrived I had to call the manager because this request had not been taken care of. My call was met with incredible rudeness and the manager telling me that either I was mistaken or a liar, as they never had any sheets, she didn't care what I had been told. She even suggested that I go out and buy some sheets if that was so important to me. (It was, and fortunately one of our guests was able to bring some to me.) The linens that were on the beds were of inferior quality and did not fit the mattresses properly. The refrigerator had a non-working ice maker and when I called to enquire I was told that there was no ice maker on the list of amenities. That was true, however I did expect at least a couple of ice trays, but no luck... The furniture was very shabby in the living room and the information for the internet was incorrect - it took quite a bit of trial and error before one of our party was able to figure it out. There was very little in the way of tourist information or local maps which was a disappointment. We were even told that we would have to buy toilet paper when we needed more. This was a lesson to me that you cannot believe what people will tell you when they want your money...

The following is a response from the owners appointed property manager: "At every stage, every effort was made to assist this guest during her stay at the property. All emails, text messages and phone calls were responded to with speed. We arranged for maintenance to attend a number of times and sort the issues the guest was unfortunate enough to experience. At no time was anyone anything other than polite and professional. We operate an efficient service, in planning, preparation and rectification, with the customer first at all times. At no point did any of the management team say that sheets and blankets would be left at the property; indeed there are none, and the housekeeping company do not carry spares for every house. The first we heard was when the guest called to complain that separate sheets were not left out. Suggesting popping to the local superstore to purchase the items the guests needed was simply an effort to help her deal with the issue in the most expeditious manner on the evening of their arrival. There was no problem with the wifi, nor the information that was contained within the guest information folder. When maintenance arrived, the wifi was working perfectly, as it was for the previous and subsequent guests. As we understood it, the guests were having problems connecting, as they were at the far corners of the (large) house, out of range of the router – this is common in any house. The further issues experienced were all due to the electricity power cuts, which were clearly, out of our control. We worked hard with the energy supplier to get the power on quickly - all part of our rectification protocol as mentioned previously . As for the supply of toilet paper, the housekeeping company leave a couple of rolls in every bathroom as a starter supply. As with all the properties, this is marketed as a self-catering home and ‘initial supplies’ of toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, cling wrap, etc. are provided to all guests – we can hardly be held accountable for over-enthusiastic use of toilet paper! Most guests actually prefer to buy bags of ready-made ice, but I shall add a couple of ice trays to the kitchen."
