Cottage in Private Beach Community Near Cedar Point and Kalahari
Shipwreck House: Crew Quarters is part of Offshore Breeze — three spaces in the Mitiwanga community, a semi-private beach access subdivision nestled between the lakeside towns of Vermilion and Huron, Ohio. Every Offshore Breeze property is built around the same promise: a well-equipped, comfortable, clean, and safe space for making memories. Crew Quarters was designed specifically for the kind of trip that takes a whole year to plan — and becomes the story everyone tells for the next ten.
Built for the Big Gathering Two dedicated bedrooms anchor the sleeping arrangements, and a third room offers real flexibility: set it up as a dining space for the whole crew, or deploy the full-size cabinet murphy bed and sleep another couple comfortably. When the murphy bed is stowed, that room transforms into a game space with seating for up to ten — and the shelving alongside it is stocked with games ready to fuel the kind of competitive evenings that become family legend.
A half bath means morning chaos stays manageable. When you have multiple families moving toward a Cedar Point departure at the same time, that extra sink is worth its weight in gold. The living room opens onto a paved private patio in the back, stocked with a propane grill and enough privacy to feel like your own backyard.
The sun porch runs along the front of the house with a large picture window pointed toward the beach — a natural gathering spot for coffee in the morning or winding down in the evening.
No Running Out of Anything The whole house — all three units — was stripped to the studs and rebuilt to current standards. That renovation is how she earned her nickname: Shipwreck House. She's a brand new boat now. The on-demand hot water system means that no matter how many people are cycling through showers after a long beach day, nobody gets left with cold water. Full-size in-unit laundry handles everything a week of lake life throws at it — sandy towels, swimsuits, the works — so you can pack for a week without packing for two. The units were rebuilt with soundproofing throughout, so Crew Quarters feels like a fully separate, private space despite sharing a building.
Fly-In Ready This is how we think about stocking these spaces: imagine landing at the airport with your luggage and nothing else. You shouldn't have to spend $100 at a grocery store replacing things you already own at home. Towels and blankets are here in real abundance. The kitchen is stocked with quality cookware, fine dishes, and high-end knives. Spices pack the cupboards, fresh herbs grow just outside the door, and condiments are kept stocked and fresh.
The things you forgot are here too — not just shampoo and toothpaste, but toothbrushes, razors, hair ties, Q-tips, and more. Families with infants will find a pack-and-play ready to go. You bring what you plan to eat. We've handled the rest.
The Beach and Beyond The beach is about 200 yards out — a community-exclusive stretch of all-sand shoreline shared by roughly 50 residents. There's a fire ring for evenings, fishing piers where yellow perch, white bass, and catfish are reliably biting, and a clear view across the bay to Cedar Point's coasters running in the distance. It's the kind of beach that rewards a full week, not just a weekend.
Directly across the road you'll find tennis and pickleball courts, a basketball court, and a volleyball net — because family gatherings this size have a way of turning into tournaments.
Cedar Point is about 15 minutes away via the scenic old back causeway. Cedar Point Sports Center is roughly 12 minutes out, Kalahari about 15. The towns of Vermilion and Huron both offer summer nightlife, great restaurants, and easy evenings within a short drive.
Mitiwanga If you know it, you know. If you don't — you're about to. It's a one-of-a-kind stretch of the North Coast, and Crew Quarters was made to fill it with the people you love most.

Great Stay!
Wonderful location, every amenity you can think of. The decor is so fitting for the area (loved the boat ties for hooks and cabinet handles) washer and dryer was fantastic to not bring home dirty laundry, plenty of privacy even for bigger groups. A summer stay would also be wonderful with plenty of outdoor amenities as well. Walking distance to a beautiful beach Will definitely be returning to experience a summer stay.

We all enjoyed our stay. Location was perfect.
The property was perfect except as older tenants we needed some hand rails at the doors. ☺️

Wonderful location and thoughtful hosts
The area was pretty much what we expected for a November Lake Erie trip - quiet and peaceful with not a lot of folks around. What was surprising to us was the thoughtfulness and care Dwight and Kristy put into their property: it was clear they have made an effort to accommodate anything you might have need of during your stay. Plenty of beach items are available for use (I particularly liked seeing rollercoasters at Cedar Point through the binoculars!), the kitchen has ample cooking utensils and cookware, on site laundry is also a nice option, although our stay was too short to warrant use this time.
And I say this time because we hope to come back with our family next summer to take advantage of warmer weather activities! Thanks to our lovely hosts for an excellent getaway option.

This was such a great place for a Lake Erie getaway! It’s just a short walk down a nice little walkway and set of stairs to the beach. On weekdays, it honestly felt like our own private spot since hardly anyone else was around. The owners really thought of everything for the lake—fishing gear, rafts, life vests, beach towels, you name it. Inside, the house was super clean and stocked with plenty of blankets, pillows, and towels. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking, and we loved hanging out on the patio with the table, chairs, and big grill. The oversized couch in the living room was so comfortable—it fit all four of us with room left over. There are lots of sleeping options, too: three twins, a full, a queen, and a huge pull-out couch. The only thing I’d mention is that the third bedroom/dining room doesn’t have AC, so it wouldn’t be my first choice for sleeping in the summer. But with all the other beds available, it wasn’t a problem. The owner met us when we arrived and walked us through everything, which was really helpful. They were so friendly and made it clear we could reach out if we needed anything. Overall, it’s a great value for the price, and we’d definitely come back!

Offshore Breeze and The Shipwreck house are all the next generation of a dream that was started with my father Dezso and my mother Janet. Mom died some 25 years ago. She was the first to offer some of these as "short term stays" as they were called back then. Years went by and dad mostly rented them monthly. he tried his hand at "vacation Rental" but found it hard to do with his personality and lacking help. In 2018 he was diagnosed with FTD Dementia. I was the last person he would have guessed would step up when we were young, but here it fell onto me being the geographically closest of his two remaining children. My family is not ones who willingly give up our parents to the nursing home. My earliest memories are of my great Grandma cared for by my grandmother, then she taken care of by my aunt in their own homes. so with 5 aunts looking on, I took up the mantel, and for 5 years I walked him through that journey.
The payoff was more than financial, but it was partly that. He had been a carpenter and a UAW worker, and had managed to invest in a few pieces of rea estate. so while taking care of him, I slowly started using the funds from the monthly rentals and some sales to start bringing them back to their previous glory. We got the first one "The Hibiscus house" online in 2019. The Shipwreck house was going to take way more work, and even that was underestimate. Dad passed in 2022. This allowed me the time to pick focus, and I needed to.
I am a sailor. Dad brought me to the water to fish, but I had a wandering heart. Much of the design and the concepts come from my time spent on sailboats and having to make the most out of a space. I am also very personable (AKA I talk to anybody any time, any where.) I want to make a space for families to make memories, just as we did as kids. I would be lying if I didn't hope this would justify buying a bigger boat though. It is my hope to take guest out for sunset sails and share my passion for Lake Erie.
Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft
Dad Chose this neighborhood. To be forthcoming, when he bought in, it was a place known for less desirable and more legally challenged members of the Vermilion community. I know because many were my friends. These were all thinly built shacks. I was told by the building inspector that the lumber often came from ships that wrecked upon the shore. so when he told me how much he was making a week, I thought he was slipping. I hadn't been in the area in over a decade. Then I looked it up. The place had changed. And just driving through you could feel it. This was a few years before his diagnosis, I started trying to work with him.
Mitiwanga had become a respectable place with a charming draw. Most if not all of the houses have been upgraded and shored up. The tenants of the past are gone and now it is about 1/3rd permanent renters, 1/3rd summer homes for no other use, and 1/3rd vacation homes. It feels inviting for people wanting to share the clean and private beach.
As I grew to understand what a "Vacation home" should be and why people who try to just turn a neighborhood house into a VH and found it wasn't worth it, I realized Mitiwanga made the perfect site. And now, as the traditional vacation spots are now suffering from climate and natural changes as well as over crowding, we are finding more people want a more reliable place to spend time on the water. and that is what we are, the new paradise. With clean drinkable fresh water and low impact from climate change, it is a gem people are just now discovering.
Das macht diese Unterkunft einzigartig
As mentioned above, these houses were built from the scrapped lumber of grounded ships. Thus the name of "The shipwreck House". We poured much financial and sweat equity into making it a solid structure. Much more than I expected at first. And I had already double my expectations. But I knew it would be worth it, even if it took longer than originally hoped to return on the investment. Dad left me with some cash use. I didn't spare a cent making sure the place was put together right. The good part is that meant I could reimagine the footprint the way I wanted. It was designed to be a vacation home. However, I always kept in the back of my mind that a longer term guest, sometimes winter overs, might want to live there. It was going to have to still be comfortable for that purpose. This was the driving factor behind a murphy Bed. Because I wanted a dining space for families who ate her more often. But I also wanted to have as much bedding as possible. Of courser the meant putting in at least a half bath. 10 people waiting for the restrooms before a trip to the Point is not going to work.
You can still walk to the lake in less than a minute, there is still a sunroom where a warm summer day can be enjoyed. A large family or multiple friends can still gather comfortable, but so could a small one live there for a winter contract.
