Region: With many quaint, seaside and market towns, historic sites and miles of glorious coastline to explore, Sussex has it all for a great holiday destination.
Town: Worthing is a coastal town in West Sussex with some of the most sunshine in the UK. It has been a popular holiday resort since Georgian times when Jane Austen stayed here. It can be reached from London by train in under one-and-a-half hours (Gatwick Airport in under an hour) or by car in around an hour from the M25.
Worthing these days is a hub of activity with a fantastic choice of cocktail bars, gastro pubs and coffee shops, arts and entertainment venues and watersports opportunities. Away from the seaside promenade, the art deco pier and wide beaches, Worthing is surrounded by the spectacular countryside of the South Downs National Park, packed with open-air museums, stately homes, wildlife parks and Roman remains.
Throughout the town parks and gardens host artists’ studios, children’s playgrounds, bowls and mini-golf. There’s a modern swimming pool right on the shoreline. Light aircraft pleasure trips can be arranged from Shoreham Airport, five miles away. Water sports on offer include wind-surfing and paddle-boarding, with the south-west breeze that blows on summer afternoons making this an ideal spot for kite-surfing.
Three theatres offer everything from pre-West End plays to children’s specials to classic rock and roll. The Dome Cinema on the seafront is one of the oldest in the country. Worthing Museum houses a notable collection of period costumes, while the only known full-size replica of the Sistine Chapel ceiling can be visited in a modern Catholic church.
Seafood is a speciality here. The Fish Factory is an award-winning restaurant priding itself on excellent locally caught fish along with other delicious dishes. The Crabshack has been named one of the Times’ top seafood restaurants. You can even buy your own seafood direct from local fishermen, who still land their catch each morning on the beach! Outside town, excellent country pubs are found across the South Downs.
In winter and summer, come rain or shine, there is always something to do in Worthing!
