4 Weeks without an issue
I spent 2 weeks at Casa Tucan with my husband & teenaged son. Then 1 week by myself. And, then the last week with 2 girlfriends. Every one of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It’s very well located for driving to the attractions & activities in the area. Busier spots like Manuel Antonio and Dominical are 25-40 mins away. Amazing local beaches are just 15 mins away. Driving through the small Tico town of Portalon with lovely colourful homes, & small roads full of children, dogs & chickens is a treat. The little store in town carries lots of basics. 2 massive stores just north of Quepos airport carry everything.
Be sure to eat at Langosta Feliz just 10 mins south on the highway, and at A’Kachete at Playa Matapalo 15 mins away, and Soda Eva (breakfast & lunch only) just 5 mins south.
Everyone who works at Portalon is so helpful & very good at their jobs. Guillermo, the property manager, is very responsive & helpful.
The house is beautiful with the most amazing patio. Lots of little geckos & cicadas to keep you entertained. A trick to better enjoy the patio after dark is to turn a light on far from where you’re sitting so the bugs are drawn there away from you. My recommendation is to close the doors & windows after dark, & to leave the lights off near the doors, both inside & out unless you enjoy running through a small swarm of flying beetles. Also - keep your food in containers or in the fridge or the ants will find what you leave out.
The kitchen was a joy to cook in. The openness & view are beautiful. It wasn’t as stocked as most would be at home, but we found everything we needed to prepare each meal just fine.
It was about 4-8 degrees Celsius cooler at the house than down at town or the beach. Lovely for hanging out comfortably.
We also found it to be much more humid at the house. So much so that our beach sarongs & towels would feel more damp after hanging on the balcony railing for 2 days even with a fan blowing on them.
The only thing that I could say wasn’t perfect for us was the drive up to the house and parking at the house. The road is quite steep with potholes as is typical for the area. But the gravel & stones are quite loose. It’s definitely driveable, but it took getting used to. The driveway is much more steep than the road, but it’s got two paved tracks. The parking area at the top is small, with a huge rock you have to drive over to turn the car around. A 4x4 with higher clearance is strongly recommended.
