How Horror Films Begin
We left within hours of arrival when realized that there were locks on the OUTSIDE of the bedroom doors (so that someone could be locked in) and only a dog gate between the owners portion of the house and ours. The really scary part . . . the part of the doorframe that secured the inside lock for one of the 3 guest bedrooms was drilled in such a way that it only appeared to be locked from the inside but it easily opened from the outside. While the place was beautifully decorated and had lots of great reviews, all we could think was "this is how horror films begin." Perhaps the owners are just oblivious to how creepy this is and just think that 4 inch black locks look great on the OUTSIDE of the bedroom door. However, after sneaking out to avoid an awkward confrontation, we politely requested our money back due to the lock situation and did not even get a response. If this was an honest mistake, I would have expected an apology and a quick refund as they took the locks off. Instead, we are now working through VRBO, who told us to get out of the house and call the cops if we needed to.
There is also an attached, occupied apartment with a tenant in it. Even if VRBO requires background investigations for owners who share spaces with guests (though I do not think this is a requirement) who is to say if this other tenant with access to lock my bedroom door from the outside could pass a background check? We didn't hang around to find out. Red flags galore. Buyers beware!
