A river runs through it! Magnificent views of the Carmel River and abundant sunshine welcome you to this completely private property with acreage nestled alongside the Santa Lucia Mountains.
Conveniently located in sunny mid-valley, River House is the former retreat and home of eight-time American Olympic medalist, Charles Daniels (March 24, 1885 – August 9, 1973). Daniels became the first American to win an Olympic medal, gaining gold medals in 1904 in both the 220- and 440-yard freestyle races. At the 1908 Olympics in London, he won gold in the 100-meter freestyle. Daniels was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1965.
The 2,000-square-foot iconic mid-century modern home features two master bedroom suites with adjacent bathrooms and a 3rd bedroom/office option in the 2nd living room- making this the perfect space for couples, a getaway with friends, family groups and for those working from home by allowing plenty of space for everyone to stretch out and enjoy the amenities of a one-of-a-kind setting. Carmel River, mountain and serene nature views will be enjoyed from every room.
Total peace and privacy can be found at this whimsical gated property which boasts a spacious outdoor patio connected to the house, numerous access points to play in or sit alongside the river and a fire-pit for evening s’mores and stargazing. The open “shared space” of the floor plan allows the kitchen, dining room, breakfast bar and living room with fireplace to flow together with the bedrooms situated in more private zones at opposite ends of the house. Californian eclectic décor crafted by local artists combines mid-century, rustic and contemporary influences for a truly unique, simplified and artful ambiance.
A family-style bedroom adjacent to one of the King bedrooms has a large redwood deck above the singing river. This second living room (or 3rd bedroom option) includes a 60-inch large screen smart TV.
Although the location feels utterly secluded, the River House is just a few minutes' walk to the Mid-Valley Center and is a short 10-minute drive to either downtown Carmel or the Carmel Valley Village, to the Carmel Highlands Hyatt, to a convenient corner market or to hiking at spectacular Point Lobos. It’s only a 10-minute drive to Carmel Beach and charming Carmel-by-the-Sea, a half an hour from Big Sur, 15 minutes to shopping and dining in Pacific Grove, downtown Monterey, golf and cocktails in Pebble Beach, or to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row.
The kitchen includes counter seating for two as well as stove, granite counter tops, brand new stainless refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker. The dining table seats six. Completing the open floor plan in the living area is a family room with wood-burning fireplace, comfortable seating and wall to wall windows with river views. The main living room is perfect for relaxing in front of the river, a rousing game night or serves as a prime spot to cozy up with a great book. Comfortable couch and seating surround a Moroccan shell table with two deep chairs to sink into and relax.
Outside is an utterly dreamy greenbelt along a fully private stretch on the Carmel River. The large patio attached to the house is a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, BBQs in the afternoon or a glass of wine in the evening. There are numerous beaches along the river and many shaded lounge locations under the cottonwood trees for further outdoor enjoyment. A true and tranquil retreat.
