Chestnut Ridge, a 5BR scenic mountain escape close to town w/ excellent views

Welcome to Chestnut Ridge mountain home in scenic Black Mountain, NC! We have a renovated and spacious mountain home, great for groups, with 5 acres of land, on a beautiful wooded ridge with a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Come experience a mountain escape, with complete privacy, yet very close to all the Asheville area has to offer. We are close to Black Mountain and 20 minutes to Asheville, the Biltmore, the Parkway, and many others! High speed internet!

The Space:
Experience mountain living with three separate decks, a firepit with a view, gas grill, and gas fireplace (available October to April). Our home has 5 bedrooms (3 upstairs all with queens and 2 downstairs bedrooms with 2 twins each), 2 living rooms, 3 full baths with showers (one with a tub/shower), and reliable HIGH SPEED internet (We use SkyRunner internet). The lower level makes a great space for kids with a separate living area, tv, lower deck, bathroom, and mini fridge. An ample living space with sweeping views of the valley and neighboring mountains opens to the well-equipped kitchen which includes a full set of cooking essentials, quality appliances, and ample room for entertaining guests. We provide a variety of games and are adding to our collection often! The road through our neighborhood is a great place to walk or bring pets, and we have a fenced dog area at the house that has a covered porch inside it. You can also walk from the house to the Christmount trail system, with miles of hiking trails, via our road or our private trail by the creek, which can be heard clearly from the house. Nearby Christmount also offers a variety of other activities including a pool, pickleball, yard games, and other activities.

For guests with accessibility needs, the majority of the house is on a single level with kitchen, living room, dining room, upper deck, and 3 bedrooms all on a single level with no stairs. There are stairs to get to the lower level of the house and fire pit area. There are only 2 steps to get into the house.

Our location:
The private road, with nearby hiking trails, offers excellent mountain privacy while still allowing for short trips to town. The house is fairly easy to find, a short distance from NC highway 9.

Getting around:
A short 10 min drive north on highway 9 will get you back into downtown Black mountain. Other nearby items to note:
The closest grocery, 7 minutes away, is Ingles.
Access to I-40 is 8 minutes away.
We are 20 minutes to downtown Asheville (and its wonderful restaurants and breweries!), the Biltmore, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We are 30 minutes to popular Lake Lure and nearby Grandfather mountain.
We are 45 minutes to the Pisgah Ranger district, a popular hiking destination, and 1.5 hours to Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The house is accessed by a one-lane gravel road shared with other homes and cars. The road is maintained and regraded regularly. It is not steep. Four wheel drive is not necessary, but may be advisable in December-early March if icy conditions occur.

Feel free to reach out regarding check-in and checkout times. We may be able to accommodate different earlier arrivals or later departures if desired.

Great house, close to town, wonderful view!!
We had a wonderful stay. I echo everything that Brittany H. wrote on November 1. The house was clean, well maintained, terrific views, nicely decorated, and comfortable. The main level has a good floor plan and good flow for small parties/events. We had three families in the house--7 adults and 3 kids. Everyone enjoyed the house. The lower level is absolutely perfect for kids. There was a den and two bedrooms downstairs plus a large bathroom. This was ideal for the kids to have their own separate space. The fenced in yard and the ability to bring our two dogs was a HUGE bonus. In response to some of the negative reviews, the owners do require that you take your trash to the trash bins on the main road--this is completely NORMAL for this area. We have rented houses in the Black Mountain area numerous times and that is totally what you do. Also, the road to the driveway is not THAT steep and it, again, is completely NORMAL for this area. We rented the house in November and it rained a lot that weekend. The road appeared to be well-maintained and was easy to drive. There were areas where you could back down the driveway to in order to let a car pass. This is just what you do in the mountains. I find the "luxury" price review comical. This house is not "luxury" priced. The price is very reasonable and a good bargain for the quality of the home. Also, there weren't that many "signs." They were helpful. Communication with host was great! We hope to stay there again.

Fall getaway for 3 small families
We stayed at the house for a long weekend for our family. It was perfectly quiet. The house was in immaculate condition, and even decorated some for the fall. The beds are very comfortable. Sheets are very nice. They were blankets for each bed, air purifiers, little heaters, fans if you need it. The kitchen had everything you need for supplies and everything was well labeled and organized. The outdoor space was the best with two big porches and a fire pit. Can’t speak highly enough of the great condition of the house was in and how easy process for us to check in and out. If you simply read the instructions that are well labeled for check out and follow the instructions for getting to the house and there is no confusion. Two big thumbs up!

Incredible views and trails, needs work on hosting and a lower price
Incredible views with a comfortable house, but overpriced for the experience. The owners need to decide between reducing the price or providing a luxury experience. The view is incredible. You can see for miles and at night the valley is filled with fireflies. It’s kind of magic. There’s a great trail leading down to a creek with chairs to relax down there. The driveway is quite steep in places. An SUV is recommended, even in the summer. Inside is nice but a little rough at times. The home was renovated by the owners, a father an son. You can feel the love in there, but can also tell that it’s DIY. Beds are a little lumpy, but still decent. Be aware that the two lower rooms with two twin beds are connected. You must walk through one room to get into the sun room. And the sun room has glass doors with little privacy. The kitchen is well furnished and pleasant to cook in. Bring your own oils and spices - many in the house are expired. What let us down is the lack of maintenance. We had to fully clean the dishwasher and perform maintenance as it was just making dishes dirtier. We also had to fix and clean several other items around the house. They also list exorbitant fees such as $50 for not bringing trash from the house to the end of the road. For a “luxury” priced rental, this should be included. Advice to owners: perform regular maintenance, reduce the number of signs (they are quite passive aggressive), and either reduce price or fees

Beware of hidden fees and sketchy road!
After giving this some thought…we want to share our disappointment. It’s unfortunate since we had an enjoyable stay, but tacked on fees leave a sour taste. We were charged an undisclosed fee for not taking the trash out to the road and an additional for cleaning, ( I assume since we didn’t strip the sheets.) Those fees were not disclosed in the listing and charged after already paying a substantial cleaning fee, that was part of the reservation process. They are asking people to take bagged trash not just to the trash can outside the house (which we did), but rather load it in a vehicle and haul it down the mountain about 1/2mile, that is pretty extreme. We would also note, your road is sub standard and only meets minimum widths for a single car. There no turn around areas, no places to pass. If you encounter a vehicle like we did you have to back dangerously down a gravel road with little room for error. In fact, the road was blocked for a half a day leaving us stranded and had to back down the road due to a car that got stuck over the edge (they tried to turn around on the narrow road and got stuck). Of course that is not your fault, but people should be aware. Your listing noted gravel, but a single narrow lane with out guards and steep sides is something you should be more forthcoming about. Also due to rain, your gravel road needs to be serviced.

Our property has some of the best views of the Swannanoa valley around. Where else can you have completely private, relaxed mountain living on 5 acres of land within 10 minutes of town and 20 minutes of Asheville? We have a stream onsite that you can hear from the deck, great sunset views in the evening, and huge windows to take it all in. We have a new lower deck as well as the upper deck, and our new fire pit is aligned perfectly to see the mountain backdrop. We have good sleeping space with our 8 beds and a large living room and kitchen for company. Come stay with us!
