Sandpoint's Boho bell tent on Lake Pend Oreille

New in 2021, replacing the tipi, is a fabulous bell tent on Lake Pend Oreille at Hawkins Point! A dream come true for glamping lake lovers! It's situated on a private beach on shoreline facing south over Idaho's largest lake, just minutes from Sandpoint. Includes access to the beach and dock, beach shelter, a fire pit and campwood, outdoor shower and sink, and other amenities, plus access to an outdoor hot tub. For the 2023 season, the beach debuted a brand-new Fernweh model bell tent from Life inTents.
Imagine a private beach on Idaho's largest lake with spectacular views of water, islands and mountains, where you can sleep in a LiT Fernweh bell tent next to the water and watch the day unfold. The bell tent is waterproof and bugproof, a big improvement over the tipi! The tent is glammed up with luxurious bedding and fun furnishings in a Boho style with lots of color and panache!
Stay right on the water and have access to all the amenities of a family-owned beach: a dock, fire pit, barbecue grill, horseshoe pit, concrete boat ramp suitable for paddlecraft, a table that converts to two benches, beach shelter, hammock, outdoor shower and sink, and more. We even supply wood for the fire pit!
Down at the beach, guests are provided with a small fridge, a clean, well-kept porta-potty, and outdoor shower and sink with an on-demand propane water heater. The large wooden fence blocks off the beach from Sunnyside Road, adding to the privacy. The lake is at your doorstep in this special spot on Lake Pend Oreille!
Hawkins Point is the farthest point on the Sunnyside Peninsula, named for the fact that it faces south; it's a gateway to the northern end of the lake and the Pack River Delta. Equipped with a queen-sized bed and two fold-up, roll-away beds, electric lamps and tables, and even a propane heater in the colder parts of the season, to give guests a wonderful experience camping on the lake with style. Bell tents are magical spaces that allow you to sleep under the stars and imagine living in simpler times.
A double hammock is hung in the shade for guests to enjoy some lazy time lounging near the water on the east side of the boathouse. And maybe best of all, a fabulous outdoor hot tub is available for soaking under the stars overlooking the lake! The hot tub is found behind the home across the road and is only a two-minute walk from the beach. Be prepared to cross Sunnyside Road to reach the hot tub.
The spectacular bell tent accommodates up to four guests. We cannot accommodate large, multi-family groups on the beach. For larger groups, consider renting the house, the camping cabin, a second bell tent (Gypsy) and/or RV sites. Extra vehicles may be parked across the road on the host's property.
The beach may also be accessed by other guests and family members outside quiet hours. Please be welcoming and friendly!
We love meeting our guests and having personal interaction. You won't find friendlier hosts or a more unique space in Sandpoint!
Sunnyside is a rural Sandpoint neighborhood on the north shore of Lake Pend Oreille, where there's a mix of farmland and family homes. This is a popular recreation area with Sunnyside Access, Hawkins Point Public Boat Dock and Oden Wildlife Management Area. Many families have been here for decades, including the family that owns the property at Hawkins Point. People come here to fish, swim, ride bicycles, paddle, go boating and more.
Sandpoint is home to the only Amtrak depot in Idaho and Sandpoint Airport. The closest public bus transportation is found in town, where the SPOT bus operates in Sandpoint, Dover, Kootenai and Ponderay. The site is about 10 minutes away from Highway 200, and another five minutes to Ponderay or 10 minutes to downtown Sandpoint.
Bell tent guests don't have exclusive use of the beach; they may see family members or other guests outside of quiet hours. During quiet hours from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., you will have the beach all to yourselves. Be friendly and welcoming if you see us or other guests. To have more full use of the beach, consider renting other accommodations on the property: the house, Gypsy bell tent and/or RV sites.
The house is a vacation rental in summer; be mindful of quiet hours and that the hot tub may be used by other guests, so plan to alternate usage.
Follow the host's directions! Do not trust your GPS out here in the country.
A porta-potty and outdoor shower are on-site at the beach as well as access to well water and lake water at the hydrants. Luxurious beds and bedding are provided. There's a picnic table that converts to two benches and a few camp chairs, but if you want more comfortable seating, please bring your own.
Please dispose of normal household garbage only in the can provided on the beach. Take large, unwanted items with you to dispose of at home.
Up to two well-behaved dogs are allowed, but you must tell me about them and agree to follow our rules for pets. Please note, if you plan to bring dogs, you have to understand that they can't be allowed loose inside the tent. When they're in the tent, they must be kept in a Vari kennel, which I provide. This rule is necessary to protect the integrity of the tent. Please don't reserve this tent if you're not willing to crate your dogs while inside the tent. The bell tents are completely screened inside, and dogs tend to scratch at the screens or even bust through the screens. We've already had two tents damaged by dogs who were allowed to be loose inside the tents. Dogs must be leashed on the beach and be friendly with other dogs and people. Thanks for understanding.

Fall at Hawkins Point
I spent 3 comfortable nights here in October and though the mornings were chilly, the heater in the tent made my morning tea very cosy! During the warm sunny days I read, played with my dog, and had friends come by to visit. Delightful getaway. I wish I had brought my kayak or SUP as the winds were very calm and the lake so enticing.

Fun weekend on the lake
The yurt was comfortable and extremely clean. We had a last minute change in guests and Billie was helpful in accommodating our needs. The beach wasn’t the best setup for young kids but in looking through photos after the fact I should have known better and there were quite a few different families/guests on the beach. It ended up working out just fine but it is definitely a shared space. The property above the yurt was great to go visit animals and explore. We would absolutely make another trip back!

Disappointing
The Bell tent was nice; however, the area of the tent that was separated from the shared beach was very small and confining. There was not a place I could tether my dog in this area. Also, the porta potty, outdoor shower and kitchen were in the area of the shared beach. Very embarrassing after showering or using the porta potty. The bell tent was close to the road so road noise was audible all night. The host was very nice and helpful. However, we were expecting a larger area by the bell tent as depicted in photos and a more private area for bathing and using the porta potty. Also, per the host, our dog was to be leashed at all times (and kenneled when in the tent) but other dogs were allowed on the beach unleashed.

Weekend at the bell tent
We were in town for a soccer tournament and rented out the bell tent for our stay. The location was beautiful and easy to get to. Communication was quick and easy and we have everything we needed! The best part was enjoying morning coffee wrapped in a blanket on the dock listening to the waves and watching the bald eagles fly above. Very pretty spot!

Amazing
This property was absolutely stunning and so is the host! We enjoyed the beach, moonlit dock jumping, camp fires, outdoor shower, kayaking, and the list goes on for this place. The beds were comfortable and the place was well stocked with necessities. Billie Jean and her properties will hold a special spot in our heart. Thank you!

I'm a backcountry horse woman, downhill skier and bicyclist who loves the outdoors and being active. I retired in 2016 from working professionally as an editor for a local publishing company for 25 years, editing Sandpoint Magazine, Schweitzer Magazine and books, such as trail guides and natural history titles. I have one dog, Beau, whom I call a North Idaho hound terrier, an Arabian/quarter horse mare named Bunny, a filly named Karat born June 1, 2019, and a mule named Buner Pie.

Originally from Wisconsin, I grew up in North Idaho riding horses, skiing, snowmobiling, dirt biking and voraciously reading books. While I was growing up in Sandpoint and Bayview in the 1970s-80s, I lived without electricity and running water three different times, so I'm not afraid of outhouses or roughing it.

After graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1985, I moved back to Madison, Wisconsin, and earned a degree in journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. I returned to Sandpoint in 1990, bought property, married, built a house, raised a son and stepdaughter, got unmarried, and am now married to my present partner, Mike, whom I convinced to join me in offering vacation rentals. We formed Twin Cedars Camping and Vacation Rentals LLC in 2014 with the goal of semi-retiring together. Between the two of us and our properties, we have two homes, five RV sites, a camping cabin and a tipi. We live in each of our homes for half the year, while the other home is open as a vacation rental.

I'm a home brewer who's passionate about good beer, cooking from scratch, and seemingly endless home improvement projects. Mike is a private pilot, and we enjoy flying around the area and airplane camping, as well as backcountry trail riding and horse camping.

I love having guests and sharing my knowledge of the area. We live in an outdoor paradise, and we like to share our pieces of paradise with others.

Darum fiel die Entscheidung auf diese Unterkunft

The property at Hawkins Point has been in my husband's family since 1944, when his great grandfather bought it. The 10+ acres my husband owns is part of a 36-acre family estate at Hawkins Point on Lake Pend Oreille. His property includes a 2,500-square-foot home that is a vacation rental for part of the year and a few RV sites. Horses and chickens live on the property. The Hawkins Point public boat dock is next door and makes it easy to launch and take out boats.

Sunnyside is a desirable neighborhood close to Sandpoint, Idaho, where folks enjoy living out in the country on or near the lake. It's also a popular recreation area with public access at the Oden Wildlife Management Area, Sunnyside Access, Hawkins Point and shoreline managed by Idaho Fish and Game. The area includes longtime residents and more recent transplants to the area, as well as seasonal residents. Sunnyside is teeming with wildlife, from waterfowl to big game, while Lake Pend Oreille is home to many species of fish, including rainbow trout, kokanee, bass, whitefish, perch, bull trout and more. The lake has a thriving fishery and with 111 miles of shoreline, much of it public, there's a lot to explore by boat, canoe or kayak, or by hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. Sunnyside is between Sandpoint and Hope, Idaho, and either town may be accessed by boat or car for dining, shopping, concerts and other events.
