Perfect getaway in the woods
Steve was an excellent host and very responsive. The cabin was very nice, well appointed and perfectly located in the woods, across the road from the river and still close to town. Viroqua is just 10 minutes north and has a fantastic farmers market on Saturdays. Dinner at The Driftless Cafe is a must, but make reservations well in advance as this place is well known and a recent James Beard runner-up.We loved the cabin’s porch and the fire pit was great to have. Everything we needed was there, and more! We want to go back in the fall to take in the stunning scenery when the leaves are changing.
Thank you again for your stay. I'm extremely glad you enjoyed the cabin. Great advice about the Driftless Cafe as well.
We loved our time at this cute and cozy cabin. Thanks for the great memories. :)
Things could have gone better, but it is a nice cabin
It is a nice cabin. I can't decide between 3 or 4 stars. The biggest issue was no hot water, for which we got a refund for some of the charge. We did not know of this issue ahead of time, nor the access code to get into the cabin because that information was texted to our landline. So be sure the phone number you provide to HomeAway is your cell phone. So our stay did not begin well.
We asked when we rented about hiking. There is no real hiking nearby. A path went a short way up the hill on the property. You could go down to the Kickapoo River, but that was just a muddy mess from all of the flooding. The road out front was not busy, so you can walk on that. The town is not very interesting. But the food at the Kickapoo Creekside was very good. Crazy Franks has lots of junk to consider. We drove to the Kickapoo valley reserve for hiking.
The cabin itself was fine. It is not very large, but it has good lighting. You are isolated without TV reception, wi-fi, and we had no phone service in the whole area. That is fine, but we should at least brought a radio so we could get a weather report. No radio here.
The ladder to the bed has to be carefully considered in the middle of the night. Do I really need to go to the bathroom? The place work well with our dog, though he was somewhat perplexed when we disappeared up the ladder.
Oh, and there was no top sheet for the bed which we did not like. We did not find any more sheets available in the place.
We have not yet received back the $150 damage deposit.
I do apologize for the hot water issue. The tank has been replaced and the hot water is working well now. I also appreciate you bringing the issue of not top sheet. I will address this with the person who sets up the cabin for me. I also appreciate the radio suggestion. Thank you for your stay.
we loved the cabin, very cozy and clean. the cabin was well supplied with everything you needed.
the location was secluded and beautiful.we will love to go back. management was very nice and helpfull.
Left after first night/ had planned on two
Found furniture worn out / uncomfortable. Bath towels thin/used up. No soaps/shampoos. No top sheet for bedding was off putting. No hot water for shower. Cracked shower liner. Overflowing trash can outside from previous guests that critters visited at night. Love every other “cabin” we’ve rented but won’t return to this one. The area remains amazing even after flooding. European style farmers market incredible. Trout fishing mind blowing. Great Kickapoo coffee, exceptional wine bar in downtown Viroqua. And Driftless cafe has few rivals. Note many positive reviews love the property, just not our scene.
Perfect early fall getaway
The cabin is rustic but well appointed. Location back from and above the road provides good views and privacy. Ample wood and good weather provided great fires in the fire bowl and star gazing. Despite road closures due to area flooding, the Gays Mills orchards were open and brimming with apples and other harvest items. It was a great few days in our favorite portion of Wisconsin.
