Gorgeous! Perfect location for a trip to the beautiful Cotswolds
As a group of friends we stayed at The Crook for a wedding held near by at Hyde House. The location was perfect and we had a wonderful stay. So nice to relax the day before, take our time getting ready, then equally, take our time on the Sunday to leave! Breakfast in the garden was glorious! Thank you Joanna!
Avoid - looks nothing like the pictures!
Firstly, the 1 star rating (instead of no stars) is for its location. It is in a fantastic location, walking distance to Stow. We stayed in the back bedroom so no road noise, however if you pull the short straw and get the road side bedroom - the traffic noise is 24/7. Parking wasn't an issue for us. It's great driving distance to all sight-seeing and really close to Daylsford Farm. This is the ONLY good point.
The condition of this property is poor. It is not average - it is poor. The below points are just some of the issues we noticed and that was 2 people staying in a 6 person property.
1. The downstairs toilet – very dirty – needs bleaching.
2. General wear-and-tear. It is in desperate need of fresh paint and handy-work. Walls are all scuffed, stained and look terrible.
3. The radiators need bleeding – in particular the kitchen which sounds like rain coming in! The 1st bedroom up the stairs also needs it.
4. The sofa would have to be the worst offense – it is literally on an angle. You have to sit with pillows under your bottom otherwise you roll off! The whole room smells like wet dog and the old blanket on top isn’t fooling anyone! If you are more than say 3 people - you will be very cramped in the living room.
5. 2nd bedroom near bathroom – that rug is disgusting and needs replacing! The side table is cracked. The window is broken and doesn’t stay open and well and the lock isn’t working to close it. The cupboard is full of dust – coat hangers needed wiping before anything went in.
7. The carpet is filthy and covered in stains in most places.
8. The bathroom is ok – minus the mouldy seal. The water pressure is a joke – I had to book in to get a blow dry as washing shampoo out of thick hair is impossible. The tub is very slippery and the floor mat on offer is yellow and mould starting to grow.
Also, bathroom is tiny - so if 6 people are sharing - good luck!
Having read the negative reviews - it seemed pointless to contact the owners as the issues raised were not going to be solved within a couple days and not without disruption. On return home i did complain - no response - i threatened with a bad review - i got an email acknowledgment (no apology), a week passed by, another threat and then i got a response. Which basically said they are aiming to do work on the property but haven't had a chance (the complaints i am making have been raised over 3 years ago by people).
Would not advise staying here
""Character Cottages, as a marketing agency, does not look after or maintain any cottages. The following is written by the property manager of The Crook: "On the rare occasion that we receive negative comments about any of our homes, we are disappointed as so much effort goes in to the maintenance and preparation. Our highest priority is to ensure that our guests’ expectations are exceeded, and for the most part, we are very successful in this respect. Despite our best efforts, things go wrong from time to time, as they do with any property. When this occurs, we move heaven and earth to rectify/repair/replace as necessary; always as quickly as we can, with minimum disruption to the guests. All we ask is that we are notified when an issue arises, so that we have the ability to take whatever action necessary. Unfortunately, we were not afforded the opportunity in this case.
These guests stayed at the property for seven full days, during which time they did not make contact with us by any method (email, text, 24-hour phone service) to advise of any issue. We were only made aware of her complaint two days after departure, by which time, new guests were in the property. When the new guests called to say that there was a problem with the hot water, we arranged for an engineer to attend the same day. He discovered that a part on the boiler had failed, which was immediately replaced. Had we been told of a problem by the author of this review, we could have rectified the issue not only for them, but for the incoming guests too.
Any points raised by guests are fully investigated and, during the process for this complaint, we discovered that the photograph showing the ‘dirty toilet’ was actually taken on the day of departure – 7 days after the party of six arrived! It was, without question, spotless when they arrived, or they surely would have provided a photo taken on that arrival day. Providing false documentation with the intention of deceiving the managing company, and using points from previous guest comments is wholly indefensible.
In any event, we responded, in full, to the guest complaint within 8 days of receipt. We advised that the majority of carpets in the property had recently been replaced, and that the remaining would be done so within the next few weeks. All our homes are constantly under review and maintenance schedules are in place for redecoration, replacement as necessary.'"
