Well equipped house in a marvelous garden.
The house has seen quite some years, but is reasonably maintained and is located in a marvelous garden that is weekly cared of by a local gardener. The garden hosts exotic blossoms, orchids that happened to be in flower when we stayed there, old broadleaf trees, one coconut palm which we could use the coconuts of, a mango tree and one lime tree, attrackting hummingbirds, dragonflies and monkeys. The gardener has the skill to strip down coconuts from their fiber with a hoe. He enjoys cold drinks and a tip.
The house is well equipped for self catering with a big fridge, deep freezer and gas stove. In every room there are ceiling fans with their typical sound plus additional portable fans to compensate for the lack of air-condition. So definitely an apartment for people enjoying the carribean warmth. Most of the mosquitos stay out since everywhere there are mosquito nets on the windows. Additionally there are hooks to attach the provided mosquito nets over the beds to fend off the astute ones that managed to sneak in. There are plenty of towels and quite some spices in the kitchen to be used. Except rare cars that pass by at night time there are not too many sounds of civilisation, so one can enjoy the intense sounds of nature from birds, monkeys and crickets and learn when their bedtime is and when they get up. The house hosts a big top-loading washing machine with a huge capacity which washes ok. A tumbler is not needed, since the laudry dries in no time. The alarm system works. So does the built in safe.
The way to the beach is not too long. For long distance swimming a surface marker buoy should be brought along, to avert clashes with jet boats or tourist boats.
Hi Klaus, I am glad you and your family enjoyed your first trip to Barbados. We look forward to your return. You are correct for safety reasons for those adventurous people heading way way out from the shore, to snorkel or long distance swims, a marker buoy is always a good idea.
Does what it says on the tin!
Would we stay there again? Yes please!
Excellent communication from before we arrived: Dave (super tall taxi-van driver) met us at the airport even though we were an hour late (LIAT for you), then took us to a supermarket; Viv was there to explain & handover to Shaneisha as he was away for a while; Rob was always in contact if Viv couldn't help.
Excellent house: welcoming, huge outdoor covered verandahs which became our default living area with the fans on - it was pretty hot and humid; AC in the bedrooms at night; fully equipped kitchen, great to have a water filter tap & coffee filters - so nice to have the food essentials left by previous guests; we used the kayak often; loads of towels etc.
Great BBQ, also used nearly every day (fresh but frozen fish from the fish market, yum). Jordan's Supermarket dropped us off after a big shop, so that was handy. We managed the week with only public transport.
Excellent Gibbs beach nearby: we were super lucky to see turtles hatching just after sunset on our last evening. Also great for snorkelling even for beginners as the fish and low rocks are close inshore. But also sandy areas if you just want to swim (and quiet at all times of the day when we were there). One needs to use the outdoor shower by the back as the sand is very sticky on sunblock and hides everywhere.
Folkestone Marine Beach (bus ride south) was great for snorkelling too, although the showers weren't working, and it is quite popular in the evenings. We didn't see any turtles but lots of other marine life. Beers pricey.
Buses easy to use and can certainly be an adventure (beware if the music is really loud, the driver may be racing the bus behind. Or maybe that was just our experience!) Now $3.50/trip since July 2019.
Mullins beach has a small bar, but no food when we were there. Chris's place (15mins uphill stroll from the house) has great food.
Cons: nothing to do with Gibbs Palms per se. We were out of season so it was pretty hot and humid (over 32 degrees C some days) and didn't really cool down at night. Result: very hungry and voracious mosquitos and sandflies and other biting insects. We used about a bottle of spray each in a week. Although the house is ideal for the beach and even a hot walk into Speightstown, it was off-season, so not many food options in walking distance. But we managed! Lucky for the next guests the mangoes in the garden weren't ripe yet, as we'd have eaten them all. The limes were delicious in our drinks...
I am glad your group enjoyed your vacation and stay at Gibbs Palms. It sounds like you did a lot and explored. Seeing the Turtles hatching is a rare treat. I have never witnessed it in my 50 years. Gibbs Beach would have more possibilities of seeing them, it being a quieter more private beach. The summer season does bring more mosquitoes with the rain, that is why we have screens/mesh on all the windows. In the dryer winter season they are less important.
I hope you can return at some point.
Fits like a glove
This was our second stay and everything just gets better. Thank you Rob and Honor. The house was wonderful, we loved the new bedroom colour and the new gas BBQ. The classic brick one was a challenge for us. We will always go in June now because it is so wonderfully quiet and relaxing. Gibbes beach was ours most days to walk, swim and enjoy to ourselves. The people are so friendly around the island and glad to see you because of the fewer tourists around. The mangoes were insane all around the island! The tree in the yard produces the tastiest we have ever had. More than we could eat, we could not keep up with them. Making mango banana smoothies and sometimes daiquiris was a glorious daily treat.
It is only about 2 degrees warmer than in the winter and 100 times nicer than at home this time of year. We are going to work out the details to get back next year. Thanks Again. Terry and Julie
Glad you enjoyed the house and the Mangos. It is a unique tree. You left the house in great shape Thank you. Looking forward to you coming back.
